After birth of my grandson in the hospital on 12th September 8.16pm, I informed my relatives over phone. My nephew, who has come to our home, lighted crackers and fireworks, on the street on my behalf; this is a ritual to be done as per family tradition; this announces a birth in the family. Families, who have common clan with me, will have to observe several rituals for some days with us. In some families they produce sound by striking brass utensils after child birth, if the baby is not crying due to some reason; he/she starts crying, doctors say crying after birth is essential. So how you announce arrival of a baby to your family, any such rituals, and traditions? Please share and comment on this. Thanks in advance. Professor ‘Bhuwan’. . 14/9/2011

In America we have "baby showers" before the baby is born where friends and family of the mother and father gather, and bring gifts for the baby. I sent out announcement cards in mail when mine was born, with pictures of her :)

dear dada, Thanks for sharing this ritual and tradition. Here we do not have particular way of celebrating and welcoming newly born babies. But we have this baby shower before the mother give birth. Family members can hold a small gathering once the baby was born or arrived home from the hospital. hugs to you,maa and shubee

hi professor, i have been thinking very hard but i could not recall any tradition after a baby is born. we announce a baby's birth through the modern way - cellphone and telephone. there is the baby shower before the baby is born (where friends of the to be mom gathers and have a party and gifts for the baby are given during that date) and then the birth, and after a month or more there is the - christening where another party is held in behalf of the baby. ann

Hello Papa! Wow how festive and enjoyable for all to share with you on this blessed and wonderful day. Upon arriving home with our babies, we don't usually make an event. We do baptisms after a few weeks so allow the mother to recover. At which time the baby is baptized and the families get together after wards with lots of gifts and to meet the new baby. There are lots of family's and friends that to go visit mom and baby the next day after the delivery. At which time they also bring lots of flowers for mom and gifts for the baby also.
