We feed to our Ancestors

Our Hindu months are based upon moon, some year has 12 months, and some has 13. Each month has two ‘pakhyas’, of 15 days each; known as ‘suklapakhya’(bright half)and ‘krishnapakhya’ (dark half). It is believed that the dead ancestors live on the moon, their one month is our one year. From 13 September, for 15 days, we observe ‘pitru-pakhya’, ‘pitru’ means ancestors. So for these 15 days we will be feeding our ancestors indirectly by feeding to poor, needy persons, birds, animals etc. It is called Tarpana, it is an established fact that miracles do happen after the performance of the rituals. Tarpan is done with the help of priests. It is believed that when our Soul Genetic line is neglected or hungry, the craving souls often create small energy drains in our life. Donation of food to the needy, is called ‘Anna Dana'. This is a very effective and powerful remedy for our karmas. Donating food is considered to be the greatest charity of all the charities. We should give food to the hungry, clothes to the naked, knowledge to the ignorant, teachings to the knowledgeable, teach meditation to the vital, give wisdom to the mediator, but keep silent when with a wise one and share in his knowledge and energy.I will be performing Tarpan, donation etc; I am sure my ancestors will bless me. Any similar ritual you do to remember and please the dead souls? Please share your views and comment on this. Thanks in advance. Professor ‘Bhuwan’. . 14/9/2011

hi professor, maybe it could be compared to our "all souls' day" and "all saints' day" but this celebrates not only the ancestors but also departed loved ones. we offer mass in churches and then offer flowers in the graves. before, this celebration is very solemn, but now, it has changed a lot. it gets to be a happy occasion and reunion of living relatives while remembering our departed ones. it is usually celebrated on a november 1 and 2 (if i am not mistaken). ann

I have seen my grandfather , my uncles and my father performing the same rituals you mentioned. They also performed the yearly ritual of giving rice and water to ancestors as per tithi(date) . When the mango season came they offered the new fruit to their ancestors before they and family started eating . Another special amabasya(bhoot chaturdoshi) day they also offered special puja in the night to seek the blessings of the ancestors . We also had a custom of going to Gaya for pindodan . Thanks for sharing your experiences . You will surely be blessed .
