Chocolate Milk in the Schools and Childhood Obesity

Recently, I read about chocolate milk being either banned or in consideration of being banned in schools. It's out of concern for childhood obesity, one of the biggest public health issues we are facing today. One brand of that, for instance, has 6 teaspoons of sugar, half of the daily limit. Blame the added sugar, which has just that - sugar. Luckily, it does not have the dreaded high-fructose corn syrup.
Besides banning them outright, they are looking for less-sugar versions or the ones with no sugar added. But the latter is likey going to make them even sicker and fatter because of the artificial sweeteners.
So should the schools cut out the cocoa-flavored moo juice? If you are a parent, please share your kids' experiences with chocolate milk in terms of health. If you cut that out of their diets, chime in with your stories!

I dont buy chocolate milk for my kids. I buy 2% milk and then I just squeeze chocolate syrup into it. Thats a lot less sugar then the brands of milk you buy. I personally dont have a problem with it if my daughter drinks a chocolate milk at school everyday. She doesnt drink any milk other then that unless she asks for hot cocoa at home so her getting milk is more important to me then worrying about the sugar that is in the drinks at school. I'm sure that little amount of milk is not going to make school kids put on a lot of weight. Its sitting there all day doing work and not getting enough exercise that is more likely the cause.

When I was a kid I used to always like to get the chocolate milk in the carton at school lunch. But at home, yep, it was always milk and chocolate syrup and was always better and more chocolatey to me. These days I don't drink milk at all.

I'm not sure if this is still being considered, but I certainly hope not. Although my kids drink white milk, they certainly prefer the chocolate one. They are on the skinny side, so I don't have issues with them getting larger.
So, I'd hate for it to be banned in general when it doesn't affect my children at all!

this is very true and this is true.
I taught my children to eat chocolate only once a week because it is very useful but also harmful.
should not overdo it with sweet bread dough things.
need a complete and balanced nutrition.
nice day!

Thanks for agreeing - I too, believe that moderation is key to everything. As for chocolate milk, do you either mix cocoa and a bit of natural sweetener (stevia, honey, agave nectar, etc) dissolved in a bit of hot water in skim milk or decrease the amount of chocolate milk while increasing the amount of the unflavored kind mixed together progressively? Both ideas give kids the benefits of milk and not depriving them of taste while reducing calories.

I don't think that chocolate milk is to be blamed, because I take on an off some and have no weight problems, one of the reason is the kids are not exercising enough during their wake up time they still have to watch their diets, too much sugar is sure doesn't help. Go none GMO on top of all that.
