Going to cheaper destinations

I know that the world has its cheaper destinations and some countries are a bargain. Many countries in Africa and Asia are really economical. I liked staying in dorms when I was a backpacker. Now I have children I like to have a triple room. The most expensive countries I have visited have been Norway, the Maldives, the Seychelles and French Polynesia. The cheapest times I have had in Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Guatemala and Indonesia.
What was the cheapest accommodation you have stayed in like?
Which countries would you like to visit that have cheap prices?
Are there ways to afford to travel for a few days in more expensive countries?

Hello maximax,
First of all I congratulate you that even in this era of violence and unrest you did not desist from your mission.
I have read a lot about Africa and the people there. Is it the same that we get in the book and the real experience? How do they treat the white people from outside? Are they curious or just nonchalant?

Our cheapest destination was our back woods. We took our tent and some stuff. We have arthritis, so a cold ground, even a ground pad might send us to the Drs. So we put an air mattress down. We had wild berries for breakfast with the pancake mix we brought and the little cook stove. There is a cleaning in our woods with a rock ledge that makes for a good place to put a cook stove.

Berries for breakfast in our pancakes and on top of them was great. I think we should do that again and soon.

maximax8,
It is always economical and best to find travel destinations that have a weaker currency exchange to ours where we can find more value to our single dollar. It just gives us more spending money at the end of the day.
Like when I first visited Manado, Sulawesi, Indonesia which 4 of us actually had a feast of fresh seafood (18 dishes) for only 18,000IDR (Indonesia Rupiah) which was only SGD3.00 (Singapore Dollar) which is only a few cents in your country if you convert back.
Then in Phuket, Thailand - a dinner spread of giant prawns, lobsters and 10 other dishes for 8 persons actually cost 450THB (Thai Bahts) equivalent of SGD21.00 and a 5 star beach resort - deluxe 2 bedroom suite for 1400THB (Thai Bahts) approximately SGD68 per night.
As you can see, these countries just allow us to have more money for our own disposal on shopping and other sightseeing programs - making our trips more worthwhile.

Hi Sky Success. You are so right about making sure exchange rates are favorable. I went to the USA and had one dollar for one pound sort of exchange rate. I found it better with the Australian dollar.
You got a bargain meal in Sulawesi in Indonesia. Wow! Also in Thailand it is lovely you found such cheap prices. I would really like to visit Phuket in Thailand the land of smiles. Once in a country like that living is very cheap.

When I visited Latvia and Lithuania I stayed in hostels, that is probably the cheapest kinds of accomodation that I have stayed in. When I visited Hungary I stayed in a guesthuse in Budapest and I also got a cheap room there. 5 nights in that guesthouse cost less then one night in the one of the expensive hotels, and I were very happy that I found that place. The guesthouse wasn't mentioned in my guidebooks, I found it by coincidence when I was walking around in Budapest.
In the future I would like to visit Asia, and I know that many of the countries have cheap prices compared to my own country. I would like to travel around in Asia for 3 months and visit many different places. India is the top destination on my list, but there are lots of other places that I would love to visit.
An expensive country that I would like to visit is Switzerland. My own country isn't a cheap place, but accomodation in Switzerland is more expensive than accomodation in Denmark. So I will probably just stay in few days in Switzerland, can't afford to spend several weeks there

Switzerland is indeed another country that I have visited that is very pricey. I liked it up in Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia where the prices were cheaper than at home. In Budapest I stayed in a private room for a very low price about £2 and the youth hostel in Oslo had been £13.
I hope that you will spend three months in Asia. You might be able to fly into India first and then on to Bangkok. Then you could go south to see more of Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia. Alternatively you could visit Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam.
I like your idea of a few days in Switzerland as a few weeks there would be way over the limit in cost.

Countries are cheaper or more expensive depending on many things. I remember many years ago, when I went to Europe, that everyone said that Switzerland was the most expensive country in Europe then. But my siblings lived there and knew where to buy so finally it was a lot cheaper than Spain which was the least expensive country then.
It also happens when I have traveled in South America. As I know the language, things are cheaper. I make friends and they take me away from the expensive touristy places.
Brasil is very unexpensive for me, but I don´t know how it would be without my friend, Baiano. Mexico is unexpensive, but I don´t get hotels in the tourist part of Ciudad de Mexico, I use the subway and everything is cheaper because I´m a brunette
. Santiago, where I live, is a very expensive city. But it is not expensive for friends when they visit

I ever been once to Thailand, staying for a few days in Phuket. The scenery was nice and beautiful. Even the food prices are not as expensive as my own country. Later on, we travel to Bangkok to do some shopping before going home. My next cheap destination would be Indonesia. Once i have saved enough, i would want to travel to Europe, USA and even to Japan, China and Hong Kong.

Actually it is not a bad idea to go to cheaper destinations. The only issue in that is there will be more crowd in these places, but still you can enjoy a lot. Finally everyone can do thing only to their power,i we go beyond our power then it will end in a misery.
