Ever Pawned Anything?

We've never pawned anything of ours. Though we've sold things we didn't use anymore or didn't like as well as we thought usually some sort of gadget of hubby's.
But I know people will sell items precious to them when times are tough. Though I think some of the pawn shop reality shows are interesting but most of us don't have rare unusual items like they show. Sometimes I think I'm watching antique's roadshow except the difference is they want the cash for the item not just an appraisal.

Oh, yes! I remember when I was in my mid 20's and was so proud of myself for buying my first color television. It was a portable, which then was so heavy I could barely carry it with both hands. Life was hard and that TV went into hock about 4 times a year! After awhile I looked at it as a savings account instead of entertainment.
That taught me a valuable lesson and although I could not save much money then I began to squirrel away anything I could and it was wonderful to know that I had at least a few bucks set aside if I needed them.

A neat way of looking at it especially if you knew you'd be able to get it out of hock. And you got a work out moving that puppy in and out of your home at the time too.

First, let me de-mystify things! A "potato ricer" is like a giant Garlic Press, really, that's what it looks like...and I think that it was the fore-runner of mashing potatoes. When put thru the press, the potatoes come out looking like a bowl of rice, just with a different texture! Great for eating with GOOD gravy, as they get gooier...yum! yum!
I think my past verged on hoarding...LOL! Living on an Island, limited shopping, etc., tends to make one gather things more! (That's my story, and I am sticking to it...LOL)! Have a great day, Snuggles!

Sounds interesting.
Well I come from a family of hoarders but alot of that was also as my Grandparents were raised during the depression. So they kept everything as they didn't know if they'd have the money to replace something or get rid of something they could use for something else. Sometimes it was just junk, like empty yogurt containers.
Enjoy your day as well Pergammano!

I hear you! I've been working on uncluttering 10yrs or so worth of stuff. I've got my Mother's things, my stuff from when I was in college, and all the stuff we've picked up over the years.
I bet I'd have a field day in your house! And no I have no idea what a potato ricer is either. But I do know what a washboard is!

Living in poverty most of my life, I am no stranger to the pawn shop and have hocked belongings for essentials...like food. My self-esteem always takes a shameful blow when I would have to take something to the pawn shop. Many of us see tough times and have to choose to sell belongings, you just do it a bit differently by directly selling the items yourself. Hopefully, you will never have to make the choice to hock something.

You are right though you have to do what you have to do to buy things like groceries and keep the bills paid and the family fed. I hope your life is a bit smoother now and stays that way.

I've never pawned anything. When times are tough I'd rather sell items I can live without rather than pawn something and worry about trying to buy it back. We have sold many things before when times were tough. We sold hubby's computer when we moved in here.. it got us $300, but we didn't need his computer anymore since space is limited here, and he had Vista which I didn't like at all!

I don't mind vista it's all the same to me. But if you don't have the space that's a good reason to put that money to something else.

No i haven't, I have kept everything that my parents gave me that had centimental value. The thought was there. I still have my class ring on my hand and my musical instrument from high school under my bed and I don't really plan on getting rid of them.

I don't really know anyone who intended on having to pawn anything but sometimes it has to be done weather we want to or not.

;) that's okay, stuff that we have laying around that we don't need anymore that's not of any sentimental value, it's okay i guess.

I've pawned some jewelries before when I was having financial difficulties. Sad to note that I was not able to redeem those items. I haven't redeemed 10 pieces of jewelries such as 3 rings, 1 choker, 2 necklaces, 2 pairs of earrings and 2 bracelets. I missed those things. They were precious for me but because I haven't received the notices from the pawnshop, I was not able to pay them on time. The notices were sent thru our Post Office but because of the inefficient services of our post office I lost my jewelries.

I would have been upset of not recieving the notice in a timely fashion so that if you had the money you could of claimed a few of your items.

I hate pawning stuff, but sometime I find something useful to buy from pawn shops such as fishing poles.

Sometimes you can find bargains there, it just depends on the price and the condition of the items.
