In favor of frogs

This year the frogs were late, we had such a cool Summer that we didn't hear them until about 4 weeks ago. It's just by chance that I noticed a frog leg sticking out from behind my proach light. So I got a stick an gently pulled the light away only to discover a whole frog community behind it. Since I discovered this we have been leaving the light on all night to actract the bugs to feed the frogs. It's a little thing, but the least i can do to encourage these very helpful beings. All for the frogs.

I really like frogs. I love to hear them call to each other at night and the deep bellowing of males. There are so pretty in the sunlight around a pond or a stream, too. My mom loved frog's legs, she and her dad and brother used to go to the creek and catch them so that her mother could fry them up. I don't think I would like such a "delicacy" because I would think of how the frog was so lovely when it was alive.

I don't often get to see frogs, but someone in our neighborhood with a fenced yard must have a pond, because everytime I walk by at dusk or after dark I can hear them. I sometimes see tree frogs on our property and marvel at how such tiny bodies can emit such loud sounds. I have always liked frogs, but see more toads than frogs where I live. I have found tadpoles in the river, but never seen what they turn out to be, since our river dries up in summer and doesn't return until the rainy season. I remember when I was in high school I went to a camp in the mountains, and it must have been late in spring. We had an unexpected gentle rain, and all of a sudden, it seemed it was raining tiny toads. There were so many I had to watch where I stepped to miss stepping on them. I've never seen anything like it before or since then. After reading your discussion, I kept wondering where your porchlight was that a family of frogs could live behind it.

I was in the mountians one spring when the toads were coming across the road. I got out and got a tree branch to sweep them away long enough to drive past them, good thing there were two of us in hte car or there would have been many squashed toads.

Do you spend some time observing the frogs do whatever frogs do? I don't see too many frogs by me just a few toads on and off me and the kids cats and play with.

Now that you mentioned it, I haven't seen alot of those little dudes around this year. I think it is because it was so hot here.

That is a lovely thing that you all are doing in order to help the frogs. I love frogs, but they aren't something that you see around here in the suburban area that we live in. However, there are little lizards, small insects and other things around here on this side of town that I had never seen before I moved to this side of town a couple years ago. I do try to teach my children to try to respect all of the wildlife that we do have.

Oh, how fun. I have not been able to have windows open at night until recently. I hear crickets and a few frogs. I have found this summer to be totally miserable. I am glad to sleep with windows open and here the critters outside now. I guess I am mostly feeding the butterflies. I had one volunteer sunflower that had multiple blooms. The monarchs are enjoying it this month.
