My scooter was almost stolen

While my daughter in law was in the hospital, her mom and my wife were allowed in her room, but one of our male members used to stay 24 hours.
Most of the nights it was my son, I always told to take my scooter , not his new bike and keep it the hospital gate, where there is a watchman is supposed to be on duty.
Today I wanted to go out, when I unlocked the handle bar, it was not smooth, also the handle bar was displaced by about 30 degrees to the left.
This means somebody had tried to open it with some key, damaged the levers in the lock, next he has given heavy jerks to the left, so that the catch inside breaks, but he was not successful.
Any way it could not be stolen because it is LML Vespa scooter, I had to replace the lock, all the three, they come in a set.
Have you experienced any such incident?
I talked to the owner of the hospital, he says they have watchman posted 24 hours.
This means either the watchman was asleep or he has involvement in this.
Please share your views and comment on this.
Thanks in advance.

Unfortunately things like this are all too common around here. My husband has a scooter that he will take to work from time to time, but when the weather does not cooperate with him taking the scooter to work, we actually keep it in the house because there is no way that anyone could try to steal it unless they were robbing our house. When he takes it other places, he will lock it up with a chain lock in addition to the antitheft mechanisms that are already on the scooter.

Yes,motorcyle , bike are often target for thief for some quite bucks and there are many scrap metals and junkyards which will buy those stolen goods and transport to other areas or other state to sell , no government is going to check the engine number , and people love cheap stuffs.I guess to prevent thief , use good locks and not park the vehicle in dark and lonely roads.

Hello Papa!
This is sad to hear that someone tried to steal it. I don't understand why so many thieves do this and hurt others but causing them losses. I had a brand new vehicle stolen in broad day light when day. I was out on a breakfast meeting and it was stolen. The vehicle was my brand new only four months old Jeep Liberty.
I was so hurt and cried as I could not imagine how they got it and no one saw anything. It had an alarm too and they manage to deactivate it. I recovered it 45 days later and it was completely totaled.

Hello prof
Its good that your scooter is safe although it must cost you some. You took all the security precautions instead it happened then it is all the fault of that guard. But I don't think that he is in all this because it can let his job in risk and the job is more important to him than a scooter.

Thank God your scooter is safe Professor! Once , many years ago when my father's office was always full of clients , this happened. He was at the peak of his profession then, with four to five junior lawyers, two clerks and a typist in his firm. Our house was in the downstairs portion. We were sitting right in the front portico and chatting among ourselves .People used to climb down and up the stairs to the office upstairs and there would be any number of people. The outer door [a steel gate ] was left wide open and there was no reason to suspect any mishap. Suddenly there was a big commotion and we came to know that the typewriter of the typist had been lifted.THe thief had vanished with the typewriter ; he must have gone right in front of our eyes but none of us noticed it.[my sister, mother were all sitting there in th e front portico].
Similarly, after many years, our tenant's cycle got stolen in broad daylight. THye were staying in the side portion of our house.
One needs to be so careful in thsi day and age.

Hello Professor. I am very sorry to hear that someone tried to steal your scooter whilst you were visiting your daughter-in-law in hospital. It is awful that you had to replace the lock. I wonder if the night watch man can't watch everywhere at once.
I lived and studied in the Netherlands for four months when I was doing my degree. Two German girls protected their bikes with German motorcycle locks. Their bikes wouldn't have been able to be stolen. I had an old bike and a normal lock for it. I spoke to some Dutch people that had in the space of their lifetime so far had fifteen bikes stolen.
Back in England one of my friends had his bike stolen from the train station. Good luck with your scooter in the future.

I am so sorry to hear that your scooter is to some degree damaged by the thief, but luckily it is still with you. Years ago, I had a mountain bike and it was stolen by a thief. I left it outside the village shop outside our school. I was so upset and angry about my stolen bike that I had to walk all the way back to school, leaving so much inconvenience in my daily life. Now I am using an electrical bike and I am careful with it. Each time I leave it somewhere, I will lock it by using the alarm device so that nobody can steal it because it will alarm when it is touched. Take care, Professor.

Hi, Professor2010. I am so glad that your scooter was not stolen at all. It is a good thing that you did replace all three of the locks. I just don't understand why people can't just buy their own belongings. Stealing something from someone else is very crappy. We all are trying to make it in life, but when someone steals from a person it makes living so hard for someone. I don't know what is the situation with the watchman not observing the hospital gate. They should have video cameras that are set up to watch the inside and the outside of the hospital. It is a shame that the watchman did not see anyone that tampered with your scooter. I hope that this issue does not happen again, because the next time that it does, I am sure that you will be very unhappy.

The thief seems to know what type of motorcycle to steal
, Vespa is Italian or U.S, made so it's more expensive than the Chinese brands of the same displacement(cc) and good they were unsuccessful stealing it, yes it's possible that it's an " inside job " so the guard should be investigated or fired if there was negligence on his part. Perhaps you could add an alarm to your bike and more locks like a chain to discourage "bikenappers" next time.
