Yesterday I was invited for lunch to my youngest daughter´s home and my two daughters were there. My eldest daughter told us she thought Silky was about to have puppies for the first time and everyone gave ideas as to what to do. As it happened, Silky was waiting for my daughter to come home to have her puppies. The first one came out smothered and Silky left it as dead. My grandson Diego, 10 years old, crying and in anguish, picked it up, cleaned it and revived it. The puppy was saved! The next puppy also needed help from human beings, but then my daughter did it. Finally Silky got the idea and took care of the third. The three are well and as soon as I knew I told my daughter to call a vet. End of my story, because I´m off to call my grandson for being so brave Have you had such problems at a puppiy´s birth?

Hi and Congratulations! Puppies are always fun and great to watch from birth on. Great for your grandson to know what to do! I have had several litters of Labrador Retriever puppies - large litters. And yes, generally, if it's a first time momma dog, when the first puppy arrives you may even have to break the sac! Then rub it up with a nice towel to get it breathing. I always keep a baby syringe on hand if they need help getting their nostrils clear. I've found, though that after about the second pup is born, then the mom gets the hand of things and makes it almost impossible for you to get in there and help. The last litter we had here was a litter of 9 puppies - all born alive, but sadly within a few hours momma lost track of one and rolled on it smothering it. The other puppies made it all the way and are all in wonderful happy homes today. If you get to the point where you need a good place to keep the pups as they get moving around a little more, I have found that those hard plastic small children's swimming pools works great and the mom can get in and out and the puppies can't. It's super for raising a litter of puppies. Have fun and good luck!

I will transmit all your wise words to my daughter. Thanks. That idea about the child´s pool is great. I know they have (or had) one somewhere. What you told about the first time they have puppies is exactly what happened to Silka. Up to now, the three puppies are ok but I told my daughter ( who works out all day) to get a vet to see that everything is allright and see about vaccines and the like too. Thanks for sharing!

Hey! Congrats for the pups! Especially for the first one who was a lucky boy! I hope you will find good families for all of them (or are you going to keep them all?) I haven't assisted to any puppy delivery but I did assisted when my parents' pig gave birth. The little pink pigs were so fragile and so helpless!

He is 10. The puppies and mom dog are fine and the vet went to see them already. I´m smelling a problem with Diego because he will want to keep the puppy he saved. We´ll see. I can´t say anything because my daughter does not live with me.

Well, you should expect that! Maybe you can find somebody close to the family to adopt that pup. This way your grandson will be able to see his favorite puppy growing up and he won't suffer so much because he can't keep the pup he saved.

I imagine how enthusiastic was your grandson to be the one who saved the first pup! How old is he?

Thanks a lot! I really think that what Diego did is a wonderful lesson for him about the value of a life, besides the acr per se. I´m the proudest grandmother.

I've actually never been present at a puppy's birth, although I came about as close as I've ever come this time a week ago when we went to a friend's house and their dog was about to give birth any day. Well, she was already in labor at the time, but didn't deliver the first pup until 12 hours later. She ended up having five healthy puppies, but needed assistance with the first one because it was a breech.

Wow so nice to hear all three made it, you must be a very proud great grandmother. I have not had a dog who has had puppies and am sure it is quite exciting. How sweet of you to visit your grandson, he must be so very happy to have the new puppies and that Grandma will be visiting.

I just made a long phone call, friend. I´m not going out at night and it was already dark here when I finished my post. But he was very happy and proud with my words and talked with me for a much longer time than he uses to (as playing is usually much more interesting than talking to grandma). But he told me everything and much better told than what I had heard from my daughter

I´m sure of that, but you don´t know how proud I am that he chose to share his vet´s work in detail with me. Ten year olds, when they are boys, are not as near their grandmas as girls. At that age they start to feel grown ups and I can get Diego around when we get a good movie to watch in my bed on my TV. I have seen Zorro about 10 times!

How cute and am sure he was talking away, he probably also is excited to share with his friends too.

dear grandmother. it is very common for some puppies to die at birth. at least some of them are alive. you should be very proud of this birth.

That would have been so great! Your grandson is a hero for saving one of the puppies! I’ve never experienced anything like that, how wonderful! What will they do with the puppies? I bet they are so gorgeous! It is such a special thing to have a new puppy or kitten around, it’s a real treat, enjoy them!

I haven´t seen the puppies yet as they were born yesterday evening and I´m not going out far at night. I will probably get invited next weekend to see them although there´s a party on Saturday for the son of my other daughter. I´m afraid the puppies will have to be given away. There´s no room in my daughter´s house for more pets. They have Silka (a small collie)and two cats. Their house is not that big and my daughter works all day out or attends patients in a room in in the corner of her house. Anyway, the owner of the father-dog has first pick for one of the puppies. I´m sorry for Diego who would want to have his puppy. And I cannot even accept it here as I don´t want extra germs or work with my chemo. I´ll keep you posted.

how sweet, I'm happy that all 3 puppies are alive and I salute the real hero, your very brave grandson Diego who despite he's young age had the right presence of mind and alertness, I think he inherited he's braveness from he's grand mother

He also inherited from me a very bad temper. At least my mom always tells me. I try not to mind though and I don´t tell that to Diego. I rather like to do the applause part and say quietly that at my house we eat at the table and with decent manners.

firstly, good luck on you and your Silky. And thanks for the kindness of your grandson and your daughters. How luck the Puppies are because they met your family. Surely I keep a dog which we called it Spot. it is a female one and just gave birth to three little youngs. Everything goes well with my dear Spot. and the three little ones are very healthy and strong and sometimes they are so naughty that my mum often blame me for that. However, they are really cute and understandable.

I haven´t seen the puppies yet, but I heard the story by phone from my daughter and later from my grandson. I liked my grandson´s story better: he was a truly hero and saved the first puppy
