Nothing but part time

The more I talk to people the more it seems like the majority of jobs that are out there are just part time. And those that work part time work more than one part time job which equates to a full time job provided you get enough hours between each. Though with most of the jobs out there being part time one must assume companies are doing this because their business fluxuates as well as the fact they pay part timers less and next to no benefits if any at all. A gal I used to work with said she had gotten a raise at her other job so she was quitting mine. I thought cool! Good for her! Then I recently found out she's only part time and they only have part time positions there but because she's at the library/city employee she make an ok hourly wage no like me who makes minimum. But still I know of several people who work more than one part time job. Do you know anyone who works more than one part time job? Why do they work them instead of full time? Is it that it's harder to come by full time jobs or to work around household schedules? As I work part time because of child care issues.

You know my situation.. so should I even bother? LOL. Well, I currently work one part-time job because of child care issues. As you know, the little one starts daycare next week so I'm available to work full time hours and I'm hoping they give me enough hours to at least cover daycare expenses while leaving me a bit left over. You also know that I'm looking for another job, be it part-time or full time.. hoping to get the job I'm interviewing for tomorrow, we'll see. Whether I get a part-time or full-time job I will probably keep my current job at least through Christmas just to help towards holiday expenses.. that is of course if I can keep up with working 2 jobs while doing my school work.. but if I got a full time job I'd only do my current job on weekends, so shouldn't be an issue with school work. If I get a part-time job, such as the job I'm interviewing for tomorrow, then I'll still keep my current job and work whatever hours I can, and will probably continue to work it until I go full-time or whatever. Either way, my primary goal will be to pay daycare expenses and still have extra money left over for saving, spending, paying bills, etc.

Actually I need to hop in the shower so I can put my hair up in curlers so I can look all pretty tomorrow. Not sure why I'm going through so much hassle for a job interview.. never went through half as much hassle with any other interview.. but perhaps that's why I never got those jobs? I really should be hopping in the shower now before hubby gets home.. but instead here I sit yapping with you.

I work part time because I have my retirement pension from the State and I really don't know if my health is up to working full time any more... I'm beginning to wonder if part-time isn't becoming a problem...

Well people want and need full time for the benefits, only problem I bet unemployment pays them better than a part time job does.

I do know some people that works several part time jobs, but she does so as self employment. It's getting more and more difficult to find jobs, even part time ones, who are willing to work around other schedules. This is VERY frustrating when jobs only want to give a few hours a week but they want you to be available each and every shift. I REFUSE to work third shift, as I've worked in 3 places that were robbed and witnessed 2 violent crimes while working the late shift. I'm sorry but there is NOTHING in the world that will ever again make me feel safe working late at night. I'm more than happy to work from 5am til 11pm/12am. I think that's plenty of availability for jobs but no, they want people who can be available ANY shift they want. The little store next to me does that. Opening employees have to arrive as early as 3am or as late as 5am and the store closes at 11pm. The average employee gets 10-16 hours per week, spread out over 4 or 5 days. The schedule rotates so that employees don't always get the same day off. That makes it difficult to have a second job

I agree with you as well. I know my availability is similar to yours but it's only on my hubby's days off. It does make it hard to do other things if it's spread out. So if I'm available 2 days they would say give me 8hrs but it wouldn't be one 8hr day but two 4 hour days... which is easier on ones body BUT I'd prefer the 8hr day and get it over with ;0)

I actually have a friend that just got two different part time jobs last week. He got one job where they want him to work during the day and the other job is in the evenings only, so it is going to work out well for him because the two places are willing to work with each other. He decided to take the two part time jobs because he had been unable to find a full time job before he found these jobs, in fact it took him a while to even find the part time jobs.

I'm glad it will work out for him. A lady I work with works mornings at one store and then has her afternoons off and then spends the evenings at my job. The sad part is if he doesn't have a spouse w/ a job that has insurance you're s.o.l. when you get sick or need emergency services as to paying the whole bill out of pocket.

For me it is good as long as you have to handle 2 jobs about part time.

If I could get the other job I'd like to get when my son starts school I could easily do 2 jobs. However, right now with no child care I can only work on my husbands days off.

Work is really hard to come by these days. I'm blessed to have a full time job, with a lot of opportunities for freelancing. I don't know anyone who's taking a part time job though. I'd want to take a part time job in addition to my full time work, I want to earn more so that I can buy a land and build a house for myself. Possibly even a car

Sounds like you have some goals for yourself. I agree if you can pick up another job and save that money you'll be able to meet your goals sooner. GL to you!

When I worked for the school district I always had to have an extra part time job due to all the days off from school and summers and having to pay into state employee funds. The full time jobs I have had have been salary and so I could end up working tons of extra hours for no extra pay. Companies keep employees at part time so that they do not have to offer benefits. That was one difference. With the school jobs I did have benefits. Right now I have no job at all.

I'm sorry to hear you are still having no luck on the job front. I would not want to work salary either. My job does offer some benefits to us part timers BUT things like insurance and such would take my check for my portion seeing I work 15hrs or less depending on what sales are going on.

I worked a part time and a full time job at the same time up until a few months ago. When I was younger I worked 2 jobs that were both around 30 hours a week. I didn't need to work that much back then, but I liked money too much to settle for one job.

Some of the people that I know who do work part-time are those who for flexibility of their own schedules opt to working part-time and or as an additional to a full-time that they have. I think a lot of companies opt to hiring part-timers to avoid paying full time benefits and or some could actually be because they do not have enough work to hire full-timers.

Very true, most full time schedules are rigid. Though, I know my own work schedule varies so much between when I can work and when they schedule me it urks hubby sometimes. I think he misses the banker hours I used to have working 9-5, M-F... predictable and you could plan stuff around it.

Hi, Part time job is the order of day. With the down slide in world economy, this is the option that the corporate world can utilize to remain functional. With part time jobs, most of the labor laws are non-applicable. This gives employer an opportunity to hire and fire people according to his requirement.

That is true. Also don't forget then they don't have to give them vacation, personal days, dental insurance, medical insurance, or a better wage. It can be good for business but not good for job seekers who need to provide for their family.
