There Is No Respect Anymore

I am feeling this the older I get. My Dad is 74; he has no respect from the young 'uns down his street. If kids want to dig in his crazy-paving at the front of his house they will!
It's the same with me and my job search. If you remember I applied for a job at the GMB Union as their Secretary. Not surprisingly, I was unsuccessful but the FLANNEL I've received from them beggar's belief. Like the politicians in society I am asking questions but getting no straight answers. The latest letter I received from the GMB Union states that there were a high level of qualified applicants. Well, I could've told them that; it's common sense!
What I REALLY wanted to know was..is there driving involved as the post is based in Carlisle but any correspondence I've received has come from Newcastle. This has aroused my suspicions even more. If they want someone who can drive why don't they bloody well say so?
The second question I asked is - does the successful applicant have a job already and if he/she has been unemployed, for how long?
Simple, right?
Are they frightened I'm going to take this further or what? I can't understand why I don't receive HONEST answers to my questions.
It's not Rocket Science!
I will see if I get anywhere with the next round of questionning I've sent them..well, actually, the same questions I've always asked them. I won't rest until I get answers. I deserve better treatment, especially from a Union, for crying out loud!

I agree with you, everything seems indeed been changed. No more respect, and seen that it was caused by a moral society ha sbeen changing. We no longer seen as civilized beings.

I think the main problem with Unions are that some of them have become too BIG. Mum's Union, for example used to be 3 Unions and they have all amalgamated (word of the day) into one. I think we all voted in favour of it at the time but nothing gets done with big Unions as there are too many Members wanting their services.

I can understand their "flannel". I would not tell you those employment details either. None of your business who they employ and ther Union will be sensitive to the requirements of the Data Protection Act. What you might ask is what proportion of successful applicants to jobs with the GMB in Carlisle (in a given time frame - say 12 months) were employed prior to appointment. If they required you to drive (their vehicle) then it's perfectly OK to say so in the job description. However, if there is general travel involved they should also say so and ask you how you would achieve it. If you feel that you were discriminated against then the onus is on you to demonstrate how. You can't expect them to drop themselves in it. You wouldn't!
You can reasonably ask why you were not selected. But most organisations, if they reply at all, will probably say that the field was highly qualified, strong etc. Look at your CV, ensure that with public sector and similar posts (in which I would include Trade Unions) that you make sure that you address as much of the personal specification as you can. You might also think about getting some professional advice about presenting yourself better on your CV if you can.
Turning to your Dad. That's what the bobby on the beat is for. Trouble is they don't have foot patrols out of city centres too often these days. I think that is a great mistake. We have a dedicated and named officer here. But I haven't seen her in years. She used to send out a Neighbourhood Watch leaflet but even that seems to have dried up.

Read this too, I think I've had a lucky escape with this particular Union!

You might be asking those questions till the cows come home. I have a feeling that you will keep getting very generic answers. I understand what you're saying, none of these places ever want to give straight answers. They cannot be honest because they are all liars. You're right, they are like politicians. But good luck and pushing forward with it.

Up above in another box I've mentioned an email I got from Tom Brennan (nasty piece of work) and I reckon I've actually had a lucky escape there!

"there were a high level of qualified applicants. "They totally spoke in bureaucratic jargon."Situations vacant" was nothing but a facade, maybe the person was decided at the higher level but not officially announced, which is nothing new.

I don't see why they would tell you about the other candidates, but they certainly should be able to tell you if the job requires driving and that sort of thing.
