Fishes For The Aquarium

Philippines

We have been raising aquarium fishes to be one of our major sources of income. When we decided to move into this city where we hold residence for four years now, we have become dependent on the income generated at the farms. We are once again considering growing fishes for the aquarium. The income share from the farms will never be sufficient to cover for the monthly expenses. Please share with me your thoughts on this. Manila, Philippines is definitely a good market area however, we are not so familiar yet with suppliers for the fishes that we can grow. I have been trying to pinpoint good suppliers for the breeder stocks. Yes, i need those hints on how to locate them.

I have a suggestion if I may, since you have a farm land, why not build multiple small ponds there instead to breed fishes if they are not the sensitive variety? In my experience they thrive faster in ponds because of natural conditions. Just release the choice breeders to the pond, wait for them to breed and harvest them when ready. It would also be less expensive if you want to breed commercially since you won't have to feed them that often, since they will thrive on algae and insect larvae. You would also eliminate the need for an aerator. Save the aquariums for the more sensitive species or use it for the choice fishes that you harvested from the pond. I see that you are from Davao, I think there are buyers there already or nearer cities like Cebu so you save on shipping cost. If you want to sell to Manila then you have to search the web, I think they are flown in oxygenated plastic bags inside styrofoam ice boxes. Also consider what you want to breed, it's like fashion, there are trends, there was a time when people prefered aruanas, then the cyclids etc... so you have to capitalize on this in order to maximize your profits. Good luck

Maybe trinidadvelasco wants to breed small ornamental fishes good for aquarium like guppies. Are you into growing ornamental fishes, louievill? You seem to know a lot.

Yep, but small ornamental fishes like guppies is not worth shipping to Manila, cause it's a hardy fish and any one can breed it on their own, even the expensive and new breeds is the same banana, oops I mean guppy so most shops do not really sell the female breeders. If you want to hit big time, better to invest on more expensive breeds that are in demand in countries like Singapore, Japan, or Taiwan, better yet is to tie up with them, they spend for facility and finance the project plus tech, in exchange for your lot and manpower, at least they know what sells and avoid the risk of spending and venturing to something you have little knowledge of. I know a lot cause my late father use to own a branch of his business in the old Cartimar before it burned downwhich BTW is the center of the exotic pet trade in our country, he owned another kind of biz that is not related to pets but as a kid I got to mingle with the shop owners and learned secrets. Got interested in breeding all kinds of animals later, and related it to my medical background, wish I could tell you more ( the space is too short

Hi there, louieville. Am I glad to have met you this time around. We are living in metro manila right now. We happen to have been lucky enough to have rented a small area for a home but with a spacious space for a backyard. This is the reason why my sons and I are thinking of growing aquarium fishes again. Yes, I would like it very much to discuss matters of this nature with you lengthily. It is true though that chatting through mylot may not be sufficient for us to delve fully on this topic. I might need to talk with you at length in some better ways.

Hi trinidad! You can always ask pet shops if they are selling breeders or ask them if they know where to buy good breeders. You can also join forums about ornamental fishes, there are lots of them in the web. Try searching for PALHS (Philippine Arowana and Luohan Society) online and I'm sure you will meet ornamental fish breeders and producers in their forum. They are Manila-based so I'm sure they can help you. But if you are really going into a full business of raising ornamental fishes, you can ask for the assistance of BFAR in Manila.

Thank you so much for the good and sound advice, secretbear. I know where to find the BFAR office here in Manila. If my memory serves me right, it is in Quezon City. We used to live in that area immediately before having transferred to where we are right now. As of the moment, the nearest malls to our place are sm fairview and robinsons mall. You can be sure that I will indeed be browsing the internet, as soon as, i leave mylot for tonight.

Good luck! If you get the assistance of BFAR, then we might run into each other.

I wish I knew what to tell you on this but I don't. We have two fish ponds but we do not sell the fish.

Are you filipino, too, steph? If you are, you are such a nice surprise because, we have been so very long good friends here in mylot. Now, i am wondering as to where are those fishponds located and what fishes do you grow in there.
