If None Of Us Could See Would The World Be A Better Place?

I'm trying not to be glib about this as being blind is not to be taken lightly. However, I was lying awake in bed last night (not for the first time this week) and allsorts of thoughts were swimming around my head and one of them was this.. If none of us could see would we behave differently towards each other and the world around us? This came about after seeing (a few days ago) a news item about the fact that there has been HUGE interest in tickets for the PARALYMPIC GAMES in London 2012. I really wish I could go but it will be on television so I'll get to watch it all that way. I am more looking foward to this than the "other" Olympics and I can't really explain why. If everyone was blind I reckon there would be more verbal communication, no obsessions about how we all look, more hugging, compassionate behaviour, respect towards the environment and the animals within it; there would be no need for our reliance on technology other than mobile phones for chatting more. How would computers work, as screens would become obsolete...or would they? I don't know. I do know that one member of MyLot has a blind roomie and I'd love it if she could ask her what she thinks a world would be like if NONE of us could see. I reckon it would be better, how about you?

I don't think so. I think human beings have a bad track record, that I'm sure we'll still manage to screw it up. Put on a level playing field, personalities would rise, and some would try and take control of others. I think we see this in many psychological/sociological experiments. Sorry for the cynic view. Last year, the (winter) olympics and paralympics were held here. Tickets for the 'other' olympics were really expensive, but really cheap for the paralympics. I wanted to go and see an event for the latter event as the venues were the same as the 'other' olympics. Unfortunately, the holidays given by companies, including mine were only for the 'other' olympics. It was back to work when the paralympics were being held.

No it wasn't. I wanted to watch the paralympic ice hockey, and murderball.

Fortunately,It is only an imagination . I simply can't imagine what the society will be like,if we are all blind.I can say we can't live,if so .We live in the dark all day long, flower, landscape ,beauty, ugliness and so on, all goes for nothing, what is more who will ensure us food, clothing and shelter....?

That's just it; our other senses will compensate for our loss of sight, I'm sure of that. Hearing, etc, will be heightened. Imagine HEARING properly for the first time..such as bird song or the cat purring. It would certainly be different but, I must admit, I would miss SEEING nature. For starters, I absolutely adore the blue sky and green leaves BUT I also like the sound of trees bending in the wind. I've often concentrated on that sound at Mum's house as there are trees in the cemetery beyond her garden. It's so beautiful it can send me off to sleep if I'm not careful!

Maybe ,you are right according to "use and disuse theory" also known as use into useless retreat. However,I still think that not a single one of our five sense organs(ears, eyes, lips, nose and tongue)can be dispensed with.

Sometimes I wish I could not see what is going on around me too. There is so much bad stuff going on that I do not wish to see.

I do know what you mean. I think the world is in self-destruct mode and I'm dreading 2012, even though I don't really think the world is going to end..but I never knew of tsunamis when I was younger but there have been 2 massive ones in the space of 6 years and I can't help thinking old Mother Nature is teaching us a lesson of some sort..but what is it leading to - ultimately, I wonder? Best not think about it otherwise I won't be able to sleep, such is my insomnia at the moment.

"In the land of the blind, the one-eyed person is king." As for computers used by blind people, there are programs that announce every keystroke.

Yes and it reminds me of the Cuban Judge says all the time on TV, that there is not so much that the blind eye can see. I think that there would be no such thing as frictions and shocking events as no one would even know that in the world that would be. There would be no comparisons, greed and or judging people as if we can't see then we can't selfishly want and think of ways to destroy. We actually have a blind member here who is completely blind and not currently active but is still on my friend list who actually participates here on myLot with his computer program for the blind.

I love your response my friend and you're sooo right. Also, I had no idea about computer programs for the blind, so I'm even learning as I go along, which is what MyLot is all about, isn't it?

I love myLot as every single day I learn something new as well. Especially if it is something I can share with others offline as well. Thank you for the BR!

i think it would definately be interesting. You would have to rely much more on yoour other senses if you are blind and we know that our other senses become heighted if we lose some...we would be a much more touchy feely race that is for sure...we would rely much more on instinct too....so as for pcs i think we would still have a variation of them but not as they are....???

If no one could see, I think the world would be more kind and compassionate. People would judge one another according to their heart.
