free transcription software

I had to turn down a job for transcription because it played too fast on my computer. I used iTunes, and there is no way to slow it down. I would like some software that i can control the speed of the content that needs to be transcribed. Any ideas? I took business office technology in college, and they use transcription machines.. well what I will get is audio files.. so i need a way to slow the content down.
As it is, it's impossible for me to transcribe because it plays so fast, and by the time I pause it, I have forgotten what was said. So if anyone has any idea of downloadable transcription software that will allow me to control the speed, i would love to know about it. I've looked at some downloadable software but it is over $100.. and that is way too much for me right now.
So if you know of anything, please let me know.

try Express Scribe, http://www.nch.com.au/scribe/index.html, it is user-friendly and lots of features. it has a free downloadable version and quite functional with all the transcription controls needed; slow speed, rewind, fast forward, volume control, etc.

I have only known those that are paid programs but did a search in download.com and found a few you may be interested in checking out. This one for instance says you control the speed with hot keys and although you can use a foot pedal this appears that you can control it with the keyboard:

Here are several you can check out as well there:

Thanks HWG! I will check these out. It's impossible to transcribe with itunes... at least for me, because it goes too fast and by the time I pause it I have forgotten what it said and I have to rewind.. and it is a cycle.. my memory is really bad.

I downloaded it, and copied it from itunes into it and I've been playing around with it... some of the words I can't understand.. but I couldn't on itunes either.. it's not a problem with the software, it is the way the person talks I think. I can slow it down and make it pause on its own every so many words.. and that is a good thing. I'm going to be working with it and practicing. Thanks!

Oh great I am glad that at least it is something workable. Yes the software needs to be trained with the voice, it uses memory. I hope it works out for what you need. Yah!!
