As the clocks go back on 3oth October in the Uk we should make the most of that extra hour in bed. Sleeping as you well know has been found to improve our mental wellbeing and help reduce stree. Guarantee a good night's rest by exercising regularly and avoiding alcohol and sugar before bed. How well do you sleep? I don't sleep at well at all thses days. I can still fallasleep on a clothes line as they say but as to sleeping all night is now a thing of the past.

Anne if you can enjoy the extra hour in bed asleep then by all means use it that way but bye what you say you won't sleep much past your normal waking up time as you've got into a routine. If you don't sleep it away, have something to do that does not matter whether you do it or not . That way it won't upset you if you haven't had the extra sleep and you will have got done what you had planed for the hour. I have trouble with sleep and find it very much depends on keeping a clear mind when in bed, if I wake up and start thinking then I might as well get up because there's no chance that I will get back to sleep.

Yes once I get thinking about things thats it gone I may as well get up, I do do so if its a decent hour anything after 4.30am. I come down and read my book, do the oroning, plan the shopping list/menus. I did some dusting the other morning. Anything that can be done quitely, cooking peeling veggies etc. I don't waste the time

There you go, you didn't need any sugestions from me you were already to accept the way it has to be. The only trouble is by 6.30 all the quiet jobs are done so it must be time for a cuppa.

Hi, If your question was how well do I sleep 'at night', I would say pretty late going to bed. But if you were to ask how well do I sleep overall, the answer is different since I manage to take naps to make good the loss of it at night! In fact I take my best sleep when I am in any travel mode-car, bus, airplane-whatever. So, if I hadn't slept well the previous night and the next morning I have a travel on duty, I manage to find a cozy seat and doze off! Did I digress from the topic of discussion? May be a bit. The human body needs a balance of every activity, including sleep-although it is not an activity in the normal sense of the term. The consequences of insomnia accumulated over long periods of time diminish the agility & ability of comprehension and contemplation. Nocturnal hyperactivity has been a way for me from student life. In spite of the fact that many rank holders all proclaimed that they would get up from bed way before dawn for higher retention of exam topics, I could never discipline myself! I think I have a weird sense that maximum time of today while awake is to be exploited rather than losing it; and same reason for the next day. Sleeping early makes me feel the day has been short used! The late hours have become the order once again now with most of online activity starting a little late after evening and continuing late into night. Consequently, some stimulants invariably become accompaniments-mostly tea but often coffee as well. I do have some mitigation strategies as well. Having learnt breathing and relaxation techniques earlier, I put them to good use. When I slide into bed, I get into deep breathing mode with some effective tricks of accelerated relaxation which ensures that the hours slept turn out to be refreshing & rewarding. All of what I said [of being good at mitigating the negative effects of loss of sleep] are no better substitutes for a more healthy way of regulating everything as a normal human is expected to do! Thanks for getting me to talk it out loudly!

I love daylight saving. Ours started last saturday night. I sleep better with daylight saving, as the sun doesn't wake me up so early in the morning. I agree completely that we need a good night sleep to function properly. I need at least 8 hours. I usually sleep quite well. I use a cpap machine, becuase i have sleep apnea, and my sleeping has been a lot better since using it. I don't exerice regularly and I do drink alochol, but I rarely have sugar products. Why don't you sleep well now? What wakes you up?

Sleep apnea is where one stops braething regularly when asleep. The breathing can stop for a second or longer. My sleep apnea is moderate. Some people, like my brother and father, are serious, in that they can stop breathing hundreds of times each night. It is a very common condition. In serious cases it can cause strokes. My brother had a stroke at age 45. It is genetic in our family. something to do with our adenoids being very large, and my case, my nasal passage is very narrow. The way to treat iot is with acpap machine. This suplies air through my nose all night, so that I dont stop breathing. My brother has only just started suing his cpap. Sounds like you are in a bad routine sleepwise. I would see a sleep specilaist if I were you. There are some effective ways of fixing it.

Thank you for expaining, I think I'm in a bad routine, I think some of it is because I don't like sleeping on my own. I normally find Monday nights the worst as my hubby has been asleep with me for three nights. I hate him working nights but we don't have a choice at the mo. Any ideas greatly recevied that you can give me, can't really afford to go and see someone. I do put it down to my age!! As we do with things

I don't know why I don't sleep well anymore, I put it down to age. I wake at around the same time every night. Sometimes I can wake between 2 and 4 times. I go to bed about 11.30pm and get up at 5.45am when the alaram goes off. Most days I'm awake before the clock goes off. I don't know what wakes me up, its not to go to the toilet although I often go because I'm awake even if I don't need to go because if not you lay there thinking about it and then just as you are falling asleep you then really need to go. The toilet is right next door to our bedroom. But if I had to go downstairs to the toilet I wouldn't bother to go so its def not the toilet waking me up. I don't know what a cpap machine is or apnea is, could you explain for me please as I always willing to learn new things.

Oh,yes! Spring forward and Fall back. Ugh! I remember a time when we didn't do that. I sleep very well. Am a night person so when I get tired I sleep. My doctor wanted me to be tested for sleep apnea but I refused. Not of my family has ever had these problems. My problem stims from my depression.

Sorry you suffer from depression, sadly a lot of us suffer or have suffered. Pleased that when you do get tired you can actually sleep. My husband is a night shift worker luckliy he doesn't have to work weekends. I was a nurse years ago and caught out on the night shift and had to work a hour without pay, they said it would work itself out in the spring!! Never did!!

I hate it when I cannot fall asleep easily at night. I know that the next day I will be exhausted and not up to my game. I have tried a few things like lavendar sprays, warm baths, etc - but nothing works unless I am tired. lol.

I know you just know that you are going to feel awful the next day. I try to go to bed late in the hope that I'll sleep all night, sometimes works.

...avoiding ... sugar before bed. I actually have bad habit of taking in something sweet before I go to bed. I get restless if I don't. Last night, I ate half a cookie, and drank half a cup of diet coke before I brushed my teeth. I still slept OK. I'm just so used to it.

I have not been getting enough sleep since I stay up too late often and then have to wake up early with either Work or my baby. But even so, I probably won't take an extra hour to sleep when we gain an hour - I'll use that time to spend time with my baby probably :) I just need to get myself to bed earlier a few nights a week and then I feel better.

Hope your baby is doing ok and you are not working too hard. There's nothing like having a cuddle with your baby either in the middle of the night or early in the morning when everyone else is fast asleep. sometimes its a job to get to bed early when there is so many things to do. Enjoy your time with your baby while the baby is small, they grow up so fast.

sleeping is one of my most favorite pastime. and whenever time permits me, i would sleep as much as i want. it is the only escape from the real world where stress and pain exists. i don't have any preparation to get a good night sleep, because i could have it anytime i want. my husband is not also into sleeping. the longest he have is 4 to 5 hours a night. he go to bed late and wake up early, i could not stand it. i feel dizzy whenever i lack sleep. for sleep is the only pleasure that i have. my guilty pleasure as i call it. happy mylotting!

I like the time change...when the clock goes back an hour..lol...but it is very hard for me when it goes forward in the Spring. To be honest..I wish they would just leave it at the time for the fall.

Our clocks don't move back till November in FL, still one more month to go. Normally I sleep okay, not as much as I would like to on a daily basis, but once I fall asleep I normally sleep through the entire night. Now when the weekend comes along since I barely sleep sufficient hours during the week my body likes to play catch up so I try to sleep in a few extra hours. There a few nights in which I have difficulties sleeping so normally when that occurs, the night after I normally take a sleeping aid pill, so that I can sleep restfully and get a full night rest. Because if I spend another night without sleeping I tend to get very cranky, so cranky that I can't even stand myself, that's how bad it gets.

Another different time to change the clocks back. I try and play catch up at weekends, its good now that our children are ol enough to want to lie in at the weekends. Hope you have had a few good sleeps since you responsed to this. Its good that there are so many more thnigs we can do in the night when we can't sleep (like mylot) to help us through the night. so many more than in the past. My husband is a night shift worker and I phoned him at 3am the other morning just because I was just so wide awake. I sat in bed reading nad drinking a cup of horlicks!!!

I think I have insomnia. i can't sleep well at night. I will go to bed early but it will took me a couple of hours before I can sleep. I tried everything. I drink hot milk before going to bed, take a hot shower, read books. But nothing changed. That is why weekends are very important to me. I don't have to wake up early so I just sleep for the whole day.
