Special interactions between children and their toys

Jason with "Snakey" - Snakey was my son's name for this plush snake he loved.

Snakey was Jason's name for this plush snake I found at a garage sale. He loved it. I loved watching him play with it. I even began to play with it. Which of your children's toys seem to have taken on a personality of their own as your children interact with them?

My son had a teddy bear, named Beertje (meaning little bear). They went everywhere together. And our son confided every secret to him. When we were on a holiday in Greece, Beertje got his second name Arkoudaki, meaning little bear in Greek. I knitted jumpers for Beertje. Beertje and our son were inseparable until, he (son) was in his twenties. Beertje looks a bit tattered at the moment but it still around. As I was afraid that Beertje might get lost one day, I had bought a second one. We named him 'het neefje van Beertje', Beertjes' cousin. Our son is now 32 and has a one-year old son. Beertjes' cousin now lives with our grandson.

It is true that children relate with their toys. But, so do we, too, older ones. There are some things around us or in our homes that we relate with. We would readily talk to them and take care of them as though they are living, too. So it will be no surprise to me if there are some oldies who are so fancied with those age old toys since childhood just as i do value my teddy to this day.

That reminds me of the bears my mom knitted for my two children. Sarah was older and didn't play with hers much, but Jason named his Nosy, and took him to bed each night while he was young, but he didn't play with him in the same way he played with Snakey. I think it's great that your son so enjoyed Beertje's companionship, and that your grandson is now enjoying Beertje's cousin.

I have no idea a it has been a long time since the boys were small and I did not adopt any others in the meantime so did not have the experience about having so many children at different times. My boys were into trucks, and things like that, but never heard of them referring to the trucks by name. And ;they loved to build things out of lego blocks. I suppose if one has girls, then they would name their dolls after cartoon characters. My sons did love Transformers and often the lego blocks became transformer characters, but that is all I recall.

When my sons were toddlers, we got them a Hungry Hippo game. Big mistake. They made so much noise that it almost drove me crazy. So I was rather glad when they tried to build things. Funny thing was that both went to university and the older one went into computer science and the other one went into accounting. So I thought that perhaps they would be more into head work and was rather surprised when I found that both of them were fixing their houses.

Your boys sound a lot like my Jason. He loved trucks, Hot Wheels, and any kind of construction vehicles. I was still buying him Legos when he was 13. He loved building anything. I remember taping him as he played with his toys, because he added a lot of sound effects. I sent the tape to his birth dad, who was still in prison for molesting our daughter. Both of my childen were adopted and they were natural brother and sister. I guess children don't name things like trucks that they use as objects. Instead they use them as they would in real life if they could, and in real life they probably would not name a dump truck. They would drive it. Same with a fire engine or big rig.

Bagarad, although I don't have any personal children, I have played a lot with kids and their toys, and I think all of the plush toys have personalities. So do Norwegian trolls,

I tend to agree with you. I especially like the plush hand puppets.

It is amazing to watch children play with a very favorite toy..lol...they do seem to take on personalities and can actually seem to become a part of the family. When you are leaving..you automatically look for the toy to take with your child too..LOL. My youngest really loved stuffed animals. Webkinz was a huge deal. I think it was her stuffed puffer fish that took on the biggest personality. We couldn't go anywhere without Pluffy the Puffer.

I think we enjoy watching them so much because it brings back our own tendencies toward playfulness. It brings back our inner child.

I used to have this huge soft toy. I have a habit of putting my leg on something while sleeping so my parents bought that :D It was a big snoopy toy. I loved it and actually my clothes used to fit it so perfectly too I used to play with it allday long and parents liked it too.

Too bad you don't have a picture of it to show us. Did you say it was the Snoopy of Peanuts fame? If so, then I can picture it in my mind.

Yes it is of peanuts I would love to post a picture of it but I don't think I have one in my laptop. Might have it somewhere in the photo albums but don't really know. I surely will if I find it

I am pretty sure about a robot and the teddy bear. It is the teddy bear which caught the love of everyone in the family. As for the robot, it is my youngest son's fancy. He was so amazed by it when he was still at such a young age. I could hardly believe my eyes seeing him draw robot after robot after robot. If I remember it right, he was only about a year old then. And he was drawing freehand. Of course, a child that young cannot hold a ruler yet. Moreso, if we would be talking about drawing equipment. The influence of the robot matter in his life? Until now, he is 23, robots still amaze him greatly! This son of mine stays to be a boy before my eyes. He is suffering from bone marrow cancer since childbirth, he will forever be my baby.

Oh, i'm' so sorry to hear your son suffers from bone marrow cancer. That must be hard for all of you and cause him much pain. I hope his fascination with robots helps take his mind off his illness somewhat. It sounds like he is very gifted to be able to draw this well since such a young age. Does he still draw them?

That was a long time ago and I really can't say they had any toy like that..however they all had blankets and were so terribly sad when the blankets disappeared...but when they got older the blankets were totally shot and had to be disposed of!

So Linus wasn't alone, I guess with his blanket love. I never saw my son do that, but I didn't get him until he was five, and he'd been in several homes by then and wouldn't have been able to keep anything personal. I remember my daughter telling me that when they went into the system, all their favorite toys were left behind and they always wondered what had happened to them.
