Hello Friends I was never heard about it before. One of my friend was purchasing new tires for his car.. He bought two wheels. Now his car's back two wheels wasn't in good condition. But its first two wheels were in okay condition. Now my friend fitted those new wheels in front portion by removing those front tires.. And fitted those front old tires at back by removing those back tires whose condition wasn't good.. so I asked him why he didn't fitted new wheels at back wheels directly. He told me that its important to keep good wheels at front portion. He told me that if something happened to front wheel during driving car then it can cause accident... While if same happened at back tire we can control the car more easily !!! So that's why he put those new wheels as front wheels.. And put one of that back tire as a spare wheel whose condition was good. Personally I heard something like this first time.. Do you think it is true .. why??

I was working in the Vehicles Maintenance Department for about 20 years. (Though, I was not in the technical side but I used to read the manual.) We maintained a tyre rotation schedule, so that all tyres wear out evenly. That is RL to RR, RR to FR, FR to FL, FL to Stepney, Stepney to RL, at frequent intervals. Though there was not any guideline from the manufacturers, we have set this interval at 10,000 Kilometres. Generally, the tyres in the rear would wear out faster than the front, as they will be driving the vehicle. The front tyres are just steer the vehicle. But, this relates to Rear Wheel driven vehicles. However, your friend's car may be Front-Wheel-driven. If so, it's good to change those tyres first.

Most small cars are front wheel driven. You can ask the showroom person or you can get this info on their technical brochure.

hello akp, well frankly speaking i have no clue to the question you are posing here as i am not a driver or the one who handles a car.in my family its my husband's job to take care of our vehicle.but am sure about one thing that you should change the tires when you see them being not good in position.its risky to travel with worn out tiers.

Hi khare :) Surely it is important to maintain tyres of the car. I remember one of my long journey when I had to face lots of problem when I used my car with those weak tyres. And that made my 4 hour journey into 9 hour jounry. So since then I am quite careful about this thing.

He he.. Yeah.. I look like in a single piece.. thanks. Yes I am taking care of those things now. They are important and better we checked all stuff before going for trip.

I have never changed all 4 tires on my van at once, never had the need to. Any mechanic I've gone to for a tire change has advised me to change the front tires and rotate those to the back. The big issue is with bulging tires. Tires will indents and bulges are at higher risk of exploding. If these tires are on the front of the vehicle, you will have an extremely hard time keeping the vehicle in control should one burst. If these tires are on the back, since those wheels don't turn, it's easier to keep in control. Control is a serious issue in the case of a blowout, since the front axle is connected to the steering wheel. If your tire blows, there is no control anymore and you start fighting the steering wheel to attempt to regain control. Same thing with brakes. Front brakes are crucial. If the pads are worn out, then they will not grip the rotors. This can cause the calipers to seize. This happened to me the other day. The calipers didn't seize, but the pads were worn to the point that they didn't grip anymore and were grinding severely. Most back wheels have drum brakes, but newer vehicles are moving over to pads and rotors. In a case like that, then the calipers can seize on the back brakes as well. So yes, changing the front tires first is better. I was told that if I couldn't put a full set of winter tires on, to at least do the front tires. You can always weigh down the back end of the vehicle to keep from fishtailing and to keep some traction on the back end.

You have 4 tires, and technically 4 brakes. While they all work together, they wear out differently, depending on how you drive, and the condition the brakes are in. I've gone through numerous sets of front brakes over the years, I drive daily and am in stop and go traffic all the time. Mine wear out faster as a result. I have never replaced the rear drum brakes, I guess they don't need to work as hard as the front pads do. But if you look at a diagram of a car, you will see 4 brake lines running to each tire of your vehicle. When they sell brake pads, they sell them in sets. When you change one side, you have to change the other.

Well.. I surely don't know about technically.. For driving point of view, we just use one break which come at leg. Of course we having hand break but we don't use it during driving.. But surely I am glad to read about additional information about it you given. Thanks for sharing.

That was a very good detailed explanation. This is surely logical. May be that's why people used to exchange new tires with front tires first. Not got the one thing. You also talk about front breaks and rear breaks.. Do we have two breaks in car too.I thought we having one only.

It all depends on which set of the wheels are dong the "driving"... And by that, if your car is front wheel drive, then front tires wear out faster... And since front wheels are the ones tha initiates the moving of the car, they'll wear out faster... When as "driving" wheels wear out, they will lose tractions... In combination with that, front tires will bare upto 85% of the "breaking weight"... I'm not talking about the emergency breaks but your everyday breaks... Most emergency breaks, or sometimes called parking breaks, work by locking your rear wheels so if you are in a habit of pulling or using emergency break a lot, then you'll wear out rear tires quickly as well, not to mention break pads...

According to my information. when we brake, the pressure goes to back tires and it's grips exhaust, so need to change back tires first. but as your friend has said, he is highly conscious about driving... perhaps his speech is like this.... for immediate braking, we have to use both brakes and its important to have new tires in front. My info from bike driving, may not be similar to car. take care.

Hey Shibham, what are you saying? cars do not have separate front and rear brakes dear. I know you are kidding.

Yes car is only having the separate breaks. Its applicable for two wheelers not for four wheelers. I guess nishant have given good explaination about it in above response.

Hi AKP Bro, I do not have much idea on cars but yes, when I had that bicycle, I did change the front tyre with the one at the back as the one at the back always got worn out faster than the front one. But later the technology changed and the last one that I had came with different tyres and the front one didnt fit at the back. After reading Nishant's response above, I feel that this can be right as I feel that to be technically correct with what I did too to my bicycle.

Hi Sid Yes with two wheelers we need to change the back tire as it got worn out soon. But in some four wheelers we need to change front tires as Nishant mentioned in his response..

Yes buddy, because the chain of cycle pulls the rear wheel, so friction force is more on rear wheel (and tire), and therefore it wears out earlier than front tire which faces less friction.

Hi Anand, Actually most of the cars are front-wheel drive. This means the front wheels are only connected with engine and they pull the car forward. So, the front wheels faces more friction and get older and worn-out early. Therefore, we need to keep them in more good condition as compared to the rear wheels. This is the basic reason behind changing the front wheels of a car first; although, your friends logic was also correct and sensible, but that is more applicable in two wheelers where the front wheel tire if old can cause it the wheel to slip. However, in two wheelers rear wheel is fitted with engine and wears out earlier than front wheel.

That's very good explaination and logical too. Thanks for sharing. That could be the reason and it is important too that we change the first wheels of our car too. May be that's why my friend did the same. Thanks for good information.

sure is true, why? because new tires will work better in the front side since front wheels have trend wit the transmission of the engine and every time you turn either left or right these tires are the ones doing the work getting worn every single mile you drive, we most know about this, its like code of tire rotation to save money to save our own life in case of accidents, i dont know that much about this but i know when you change the front wheels to back side most be in the opposite direction doing like x to use the other side of the tire.

Hi That's sound logical friend.. Surely front tires are related with the stearing and move left and right according to it. So yes they are more important during driving of car. So may be that's the reason. Thanks for giving your valuable response.
