If you had a Dr. who made housecalls, would that be a good thing or a bad thing?

One of my Drs. in VT jokingly said he makes housecalls. At least I thought he was joking until he said,"I'd probably get lost, but I'd try." So do you long for the days when Drs. made housecalls or does that kind of scare you. I consider some of my Drs. scary. Also my house is a disaster when I'm sick. So what would you think it a Dr. said he makes house calls?

I would love it because as you know, without a car, if myself or my son is sick, we have to wait not only for my husband to get home, but in a very uncomfortable chair in the waiting room, sometimes up to an hour or more, before we get in. with a headache or fever, that makes for a miserable time. As for my house, I don't care, I am sick or caring for a sick child, my house is not going to look well scrubbed..

No thanks...Why do they do that? Someone can be sitting for hours, in pain or even worse, vomiting and/or loose bowels, and they have to suffer like that? I'd rather suffer like that in my own bed, not a hard chair and in public..I am just fortunate I rarely get sick...

In Vermont, they don't do that. In NY, they do. They schedule every 15 minutes a patient in some offices and every 10 minutes in others. Why? I worked for a Dr. 20 patients scheduled and only 15 showed up. The overscheduling is because of the bozos who don't show up and don't have the decency to call. Sometimes before a holiday or on a nice sunny day, half or over half don't show up.

An hour is considered a good wait here. Try two to four.

To be honest I thought Doctors did house calls everywhere. I guess I was wrong. We have a medical centre here that has doctors available 24/7 and can be called out at any hour.

We haven't had that here since my Mother was born in 1930.

Ireland is a lot smaller than the USA.

Very true. As I said up in 3honors box it is something we take for granted. I was not really aware of the issue until now.

Oh, it would be so nice! When I don't feel well, the last thing I want to do is make sure I look presentable, get in the car and go sit in a doctor's waiting room. If a doctor would come to me, I'd use a little of that energy to shove things into drawers and sweep the middle of the floor... maybe. Doctors should know that houses get dirty when we don't feel up to keeping them clean. I'd love to find a doctor who made house calls, in other words!

If my house wasn't such a pig stye, I'd agree with you. After this posting, I'll go back to cleaning it.

In this day and age if a doctor made house calls it would probably cost a huge amount. But if a doctor came to my house it would make me alittle nervous having him/her in my home. I have been so very sick in the past I would have been very thankful to have a doctor come to my home.

so you can see how it could go both ways. Yes, I imagine paying for his gas, time to get there, time back, etc., could get costly.

Oh, yes. and the cost would be extreme because he could see four patients in the time it takes him coming and going.

I think that doctors that make house calls would be wonderful. That practice was a thing of the past by the time that I was born; it would be great if general practitioners did revive it. If a doctor did come to see you when you were ill, I don't think that he or she would be focusing on how organized your house was (unless, of course, the situation was so bad that it was likely the cause of your ill health).

right now, the situation is that bad, but I'm finally well enough, at times to work on it.

Here in the Philippines, that never happens. You have to go to his clinic again after a day or two of taking what he prescribed. It would have been better, if it's that way.

Here, they expect us to call an ambulance and bring the sick person to the hospital.

Can you imagine how expensive the gas would be? They'd have to charge more. But when you're really ill, it would be nice.

Well, if the sickness is really bad, then the doctor should make a house call. Of course, it will be an additional charge, but it doesn't matter , because it's needed anyway.

I think it's a good thing. Some people are too sick to be able to drive to a clinic. Sure they can take a cab or use public transport but when you're feeling sick, you're not thinking straight and are not really able to concentrate on your surroundings. Something might happen to you on the way to the clinic and the people around you are complete strangers and may not be so willing to help. If the doctor makes housecalls, that would be better for such people. But it might also be a little dangerous for the doctor as these days some people may play pranks on you by asking you to go to a house where nobody is sick. The doctor may also end up getting harmed or kidnapped once he enters a house. It's just not really easy to trust people these days.

Maggiepie has a housecall doctor. He/they do come, she's also been x-rayed in her bed...

Really? Wow, haven't heard of that since the 1930s here. Apparently, according to ezone, that's normal in Ireland.

I think that it would depend upon the situation. If I was very sick or it could be an extremely contagious disease, then I think it would be wonderful to have the doctor make housecalls. When I am that sick, I would not even care whether or not the house was a mess, and the doctor really shouldn't judge me for that, especially knowing how sick I am.

Yes I think that because it is one of my doctors then I would think I could entrust my doctor coming to see me at home while I was sick. I think that a doctor that does house calls would be cool as I normally dread dragging myself to a doctors office when I feel miserable. I think most doctors would not be concerned with how our home looked, if anything I could make up the excuse, that it is because I am sick that I can't tidy up. lol

True, but I started having problems almost a year ago. My home gives new meaning to disaster.
