In India, the government never pays much attention to anyone without any political connections or media presence. This has been observed time and again and was again proved when Anna Hazare or Baba Ramdev started rallies in the capital of the country but on the contrary, the young Swami Nigamanand had to die to be noticed after fast for 115 days. To him, the cleanliness of the Ganges was actually equal to godliness and so he began to fast to draw attention to illegal mining, sand-quarrying and stone-crushing as polluters in order to save the holy river, but no one seemed to notice. At least, no one bothered. The government found it wise to pay much attention to the companies associated with those activities than to a single “Sadhu” with neither any political connections nor media presence. And the result was an untimely death of a young “Sadhu”. Any comment from you?

This, unfortunately, is something that is true all over the world and not just in India. Right now in the United States, there is a movement going on called "Occupy" it started out with a group of protesters against the strength that the richest 1% have in the country versus everyone else in New York. Well, now this movement has spread over the country and there are many cities with "Occupy" protests going on. But it hasn't made any difference because there are no political connections and not a lot of media coverage.

Powewr and money have always ruled in any sphere of life.Politics is all about power and money, so naturally they listen to only those who have both.No doubt that it is completely wrong but that is the state of most growing economies where there is poverty and lack of basic facilities....In India important environmental issues have always taken a back seat where politicians are concerned, they would rather spend on glorifying themselves like Mayawati and her statue with the hand bag...a few deaths here and there dont worry them, as long as they get their Z category of security

Yes, all the politicians in India who are enjoying a Z category of security always shed crocodile tears for the people but never do anything for them.

No, this is not true to india alone. This is happening to most countries in the world. Government takes heed of the influential always. Why media? Never forget the influence of media in the general public. Media can move mountains in order to move government if needed. Now, as for the influential, i believe there will be no explaining needed on this regard. They are the ones who have the money and the tongue to make people think. This is because, they can afford their think tanks high pays so they think up things towards the favor of the bosses. The lowly ones? Oh, let them be out there by the tens of thousands. Nobody cares unless media considers airing their aches and pains. And media can always be rendered mum by government in more ways than one, by the way.

Yes, I also believe so. People of most of the democratic countries which can boast of their so called democracy have more or less the same experience in every sphere of life.

Hi DoctorDidi, While this is true for all countries, it would be even more so in large countries like India. It is sad when people have to die before something is done, but that's the way it appears to be. I believe that it will change someday, but we may not be ready for these changes yet. Blessings.

Yes, we should always hope against hope and a day will definitely come when there will a change and everything will be in order. But we may not be fortunate enough to witness that day as we may have to leave this world before that day comes in our life.

We can relate to this event as our country is also full of corrupted government officials. But we differ in the way of the media services as media here gives importance also to simple folks as long as the cause is valid and could attract government's attention. We have the media to expose the corruptions of the previous government and now it is paying for its debts to the people.

You are really lucky that your media keeps a constant vigil on the hopes and aspirations of common people.

hi friend, sorry for what happened, although governments tend to behave this way sometimes, when we live in a democracy or a free society, it's a privilege, a right as well as an obligation to make our selves heard, that's why there are rallies, strikes and indignation protests, it's part of the democratic process so long as it is held orderly, peacefully and within the bounds of the law

As there was violence, the peaceful cries of the 'sadhu' did not reach the deaf and dumb ears of the administration. If it were a violent movement or if it were backed by any political party, the voice could easily reach the administration.

Doctor you are raising a good matter of concern. But, the rulers and higher officials along with media is not concerned about the Ganges as it has nothing to do with them. Where as corruption-black money-price rice will make their power come down. LoL. I laugh with great pain didi. I so many times cried as an ordinary man of this country when thought of the fate of my fellow citizen. I wish there be a parliament where none of these present day politicians represent it. Then only we can at least think of a good times
