Do you like to make your own christmas gifts for your family members and your friends or do you buy the gifts in a shop? Do you like to receive homemade gifts from others? Why/why not? Have you received any homemade gifts that you especially remember?
I often make my own gifts for my grandmother. I have made calenders and photoalbums and I have also given her pictures that I have painted. Sometimes I make gifts for my friends, too. I have given them paintings, photomanipulations and a notebook full of inspirational quotes, poems and stories that I had collected. I like to receive homemade gifts from my family and my friends. My favourite homemade gift was a collection of poems that one of my friends wrote for me

I really like crafts and stuffs so yes I love making home made gifts. I am a bit of a knitter so I knit mufflers and caps and give it to my family. And to think of it, I think they are useful things too and will save much during the winter.

Knitting your own caps and mufflers is a great idea, it is useful and it is also a way to save some money. In my family my mother usually knits those things for us. I live in a country with a cold climate, and the weather very cold in the wintermonths, so we need something to protect us from the cold.

Designer ones are more expensive. I can't knit, but I would give them something close enough to the latest styles than I could get.

Yes I think the ones we get in the markets are expensive and I can make what we get soI think making them on my own is a lot better
The winter in my country is brutal too. And without some mufflers I cannot get out of the house.

Hi porcospino,
In my opinion a gift is a gift. I do not weigh neither in terms of the price nor where is the gift article made. Some people might see the volume of love and concern through the item, I mean, if you present me a gift that is his/her own made (home made) you love me more or respect me more than others do. A ready made gift bought in the market has less value and you do not love me like others.
I say this is a myth. I do not mind accepting gifts if it is home made or bought in the market. What is important here is the good will that they show with gifts.

A different way to show your love and care is through gifts that you have bought. In my family my father and my brother never make their own gifts, but I don't see that as a sign that they love me less than the people who make their own gifts. It is just not their style to make their own gifts, but they still care about me. I think that a unique gift that you have made yourself is one way of showing that you care about the other person, because you have invested your time and your energy in the gift, but it is not the ONLY way to show your love. A gift that you have bought and chosen for your relative or your friends is also a way to show that you care, and I don't think that a gift purchased in the marked is less valuable "just" because you haven't made it yourself. I love homemade gifts, but I appreciate every gift that I get.

I think that a homemade gift does show that the other person care about you and it shows the time and the energy that they have invested in creating a unique gift for you. On the only hand I wouldn't say that a person who always gives you gifts that they have bought in a shop is a person who doesn't care about you or doesn't love you. Some people aren't very creative or good at creating things with their hands or don't have the time for it, and they choose to buy you something in a shop instead, but that doesn't mean that they don't love you. I think that they just show their love in a different way.

Showing love and care in different ways. What is the different way? Is it gifting someone with self molded items? or something unique. I may love the gift you gave me. Does a gift purchased in the market is of less value? For me a gift is a gift. It could be a gold chain or a set of something else?

I like homemade gifts. They are more special and show the sincerity in the giver. In fact, almost every year, my close friends and relatives likes to give me, homemade gifts along with gifts bought from town as my birthday gifts. So far, i haven't receive any homemade painting, calendar or even poems from any of my friends yet. Maybe in future, i am waiting to receive one from you...Hope you are doing fine over there...

It is a great to hear that you get homemade gifts from your friends and our relatives. I like homemade gifts, too. The last homemade gift that I received was some jam that my aunt had made for my husband and me. It was very delicious. Some years ago I made my own calenders. I bought a calender with empty pages and decorated the pages with drawings and photos. It was a lot of fun to make those calenders and the receivers were happy to receive a unique gift. I have also given paintings to my friends and some of my relatives.

I like it.
I mean yes,I do make homemade, handcrafted gifts to my friends and loved ones.
I always do whenever there is an occasion and even sent few of my handicrafts overseas.
I have few friends online whom I sent most of my handicrafts.
I like to give gifts from my own crafts, with my personal touch that makes them feel they important.
have a good day

Hi Jaiho! I think that it is great. I am sure that your friends are happy to receive a personal gift that you have made yourself. What kinds of handicrafts do you make? I used to have a very close friend from Italy and I often sent her things that I had made myself. She sent me her drawings, paintings and many other things. I love to receive crafts that my friends have made. Lately I haven't spent much time on crafts, but I hope to get started again and make some personal christmas gifts for my friends this year.

Hello jaiho,
Grate. You make various things at home that fit the room to enhance the beauty. And when you present these you made things to your friends you get elated.
I too have received such hand made gift from my Students on different occasions.
Why not I get one such from a friend who is from other countries? lol. I have sent a few things that bears our cultural stand. Of course all they are bought in the market.

I do like receiving homemade gifts, especially when there is a lot of thought and sentimental value in them. I actually think those gifts are worth far more than anything that anyone could buy at a store.
I have made gifts for people many times. Sometimes it is because I do not have a lot of money but still want to do something special for the person. Sometimes I have enough money but want to do something for the person that I know they will like and cherish. There have even been times when what the person wants I can't find in the store, so I have made it myself, although I have usually needed help with these types of presents.

I think it great that you make your own presents if you can't find the things that you are looking for in a store. When we make our own presents we are able to make every decision about the design, the colours etc and that is a big advantage if the receiver is looking for something that is hard to find in a store. I also like to make personal gifts for my friends and my family. I would like to make some personal gifts for my mother this year.

It is wonderful when we are able to make the gifts ourselves, because as you say - we have control over all the decisions about color, design, etc. This allows us to go from "close but not exactly right" to "just perfect", because we can tailor it to the liking of the recipient. Unfortunately, this takes time and sometimes more skill than we have, but then again as we continue to work on these things we develop more skills, so it can be a win/win situation ... still the drawback is time, though.
I think that it is wonderful that you are making gifts for your mother this year. I know that I cherish the gifts that my girls make for me, and I am sure that your mother does as well.

I would like to make personalized gifts and would love to receive one too. But the thing is it is time consuming. It is good if you don't have other things to do.
Making homemade gifts are worth keeping because you know that it is a product of careful thinking , dedication and love by the one who made it. It is also exploring and promoting the creativity of a person.
I just hope that I can make several for my love ones for Christmas.:-) to be made in my free time ;-)

Yes, it is time consuming. I always have a lot of ideas for gifts that I want to make, but in the end of December I usually realize that I didn't have enough time to make all of the things that I wanted to make. This year I have both work and voluntary work and I wonder if I will be able to find the time to make presents for my family, I hope so. I am going to spend my free time on the presents.

Even if it is time consuming when I am enjoying what I am doing,I hardly notice the passing of time.:-) That's is why, the result is uniquely amazing because the mood of the maker is expressed through it.
Many times, on the process of making one for a loved one, ideas flood in my thoughts that from the original simple plan it came out very intricate and very detailed design work of art.:-)
i would still like to do it even if it time consuming.

That is a nice gift. I don't like the cage eggs that you can buy in the shops, so eggs from a friend's hens would make me happy. But I don't think that I will get that kind of gift as most of my friends live in apartments in the middle of the city, and they don't have any animals.

Yes, homemade gifts are unique. You can't buy them in any shop because the person who made them choose their own design and their own colours and made the gift especially for you. When I make gifts for other I always try to choose the colours and the motives that I know that they like. It is great to hear that you like to write poems and that you have received a poem from a friend as well. Some years ago I wrote many poems, but lately I haven't written any poems. I hope to get started again

Sometimes I don't have enough time to make the gifts that I would like to make, but I hope that I will be able to make some christmas gifts this year. At the moment I am thinking about the christmas gift that I want to make for my grandmother, I want to make her something that she will enjoy.

Hi, how are you? I haven't seen you on Mylot for a while. I also love to make my own gifts. I think it is fun to experiment and create something personal for the receiver. I recently made a papercut for my mother. I borrowed a book about papercuts at the library and one of the the papercuts was a picture of a dachshund. I decided to make that one for my mother, because my parents have a dachshund.

hi porcospino hat's off to you, your talents are very creative, did you also earn from it?
Anyway as much as I wanted to give my own homemade gift I wouldn't have a time so shopping will be the best option for a busy mom like me. But I will be more flattered and gratitude if I receive a homemade one.

I have earned money from my paintings and my photomanipulations, but the rest of the things I just make for my family and my friends. It is fun to make my own gifts, but it is also time consuming and I understand that it can be difficult to find time for things like that when you are busy with many other things. Before christmas I always plan on making a lot of homemade gifts, but I never really manage to make all of the things that I planned, because I am busy with work and I am also involved in some voluntary work around christmas. @kaeirole (668)

hi porcospino..
i love to receive homemade gifts..because with those kinds of gifts, i can feel the sincerity of the person who gave it to me..and i find it sweeter..than receiving gifts that are just bought..for me, i value most those gifts that were heartily made and given..and i always keep it..even with just a simple letter, i still keep on reading those and it made me smile always..
i also give homemade gifts..i always want my gifts to be customized..and can't be seen nor bought anywhere..and through it, the person who'll receive my gift would also feel my sincerity and that i'm really thinking of them when i made it..it gives me happiness and excitement..

I also like to make customized gifts. I think about the person who is going to receive the gift and try to pick the colours and the motives that he or she likes. That way all of my gifts become unique and they are different from the gifts that you can buy in a shop. I have also received some unique gifts from my friends. One of them was a bag that my friend has decorated. It is very different from other bags and I like it a lot.

I think that homemade gifts are one of the greatest things that you can give to someone for a couple of reasons. Firstly, it shows that you were really thinking about the person who you're planning to give it to while you're making it, so it's very personal. In addition to this, if you give somebody a gift that you have made yourself, it just shows that they are the only person in the entire world who will be getting that gift, which just can't be said of things that you might get from the shops on the high street or online.

Yes, homemade gifts are personal and unique. I like to make my own gifts for my family and my friends. I know that my grandmother really appreciates the calenders that I have made for her. Of course you can buy some beautiful calenders in a shop, but you can't buy a calender like the one that I made, because I decorated it with my own drawings and pictures of my family. The bag that my friend made for me was also completely unique, because she designed it herself and decorated it it her own way.

Hi Porcospino
I used to have these Hand Made cards for the new year for all - my friends, relatives and even a few unknown people till 2000. It was then that I got really busy and didnt find enough time to pursue this but it was real fun using the old (last years cards and other old stuff that wasnt in use).
I wooed my wife many a times with hand made cards and poems stolen from the Internet or text inspired by some great writers - but I honestly made it known as I always cited who was the main / original author even in those bunch of pages. I think such gifts are far better and more beneficial in building up relations if they are done with honest feelings as in today's world we rarely find people having so much time to spare and pursue such things.
My wife has a couple of those small booklets even today with her and we do read those pages together now remembering the good days when we were seeing each other.

I think that handmade cards and poems are a very sweet way to show your love for your wife, and when you reread those pages today it brings back the happy memories from the past. My ex-boyfriend and I had a long distanse relationship in the beginning, and we exchanged lots of letters, poems, drawings and other things. When we finally moved in together I kept those letters, because they were sweet memories from the past
I also like to make my own cards. I haven't made cards for a while, but I hope to get started again, when I get less busy with work and voluntary work. I recently received some books with pictures that I can use when I make cards and I plan on conbiming those pictures with some of the pictures that I have found in old magazines.

I also think that homemade gifts is a good thing, it is a nice way to show your family members that you care about them and homemade gifts are more personal than gifts that you have bought in a shop. I know that my grandmother appreciates personal gifts from her grandchildren. She is not very interested in the things that we buy in a shop because she already has many things. Photos, paintings or other personal things make her much more happy.

Yes I love home made gift. All kinds of. No matter if it's a soup or marmelade, calender, painting or sculpture or drawing.
Why? Because these gifts say way more about the person who gives them to you as a gift just bought in any shop. It also shows me if that person knows me.
Me and my family are very creative and I can tell you these gifts are always the best. It also shows the love, care, energy and time they invested in it. One of the favourite gifts I got was given by one of my daughters. It's Eddy (Ed, Edd 'n Eddy - cartoon) made out of paper-machee holding a big pot with (chocolate)money.

Yes, a homemade gift shows the love, time, energy etc that the person has invested in the gift. It always makes me happy to receive something that the other person had made especially for me. In my family some of us are also very creative for instanse mother, my grandmother and myself, but my father and my brother never make their own gifts, they prefer to buy something from a shop.
