What do you say about the Indian opening batsmen?

The Indian opening pair of Rahane and Parthiv Patel is simply not working. They failed to provide good starts in England and again in both the matches in India have failed while other batsmen have all scored. Do you think it is time to end the experiment with Rahane and Patel. Probably time to get Gambhir back to the opening slot and move Kohli to the one down slot. What do you say? Cheers! Ram

opening slot should be given to Gautam Gambhir. he is the senior opener and he should open at one end. Rahane or Patel can be tested at the other end. surely kholi should play at one down slot. Rahane or Patel one of them should play in middle and score runs and then ask for opening slot. now both players are not performing well in the opening slot. But I really miss Viru in the opening slot.

Yes, I also tend to think in this way. I think Gambhir-Sehwag is a great combination to have at the top. Rahane can be nurtured and to some extent Murali Vijay, but Patel is already past his best. Cheers! Ram

Surely rahane can be given more chance as he is a youngster. So i wish gauti to open with rahane. And patel can be dropped down. Batting is the strength of indian cricket, in that opening is the key. So we need to have a good start, for that good opening pair is needed.

I think Gambhir is being played at no 3 due to some team strategy, as he is an excellent player of spin , he is targeting Swann and Patel and not let them settle down, also hold one end something which Dravid used to do,this reduces pressure on Dhoni and Raina. There cant be any other reason for him not opening.Otherwise surely Dhoni and Fletcher would have played Manoj Tiwari in middle order and omit one of the openers that is Parthiv or Rahane, also if Yuvi was playing Gambhir would have opened surely.

According to me, they should be given one more chance. In England I believe this pair gave us one or two good starts. When we are trusting someone then they should be viven chance more than 5-6.

They gave us a lot of half starts, but then threw away their wickets. Both of them have been given quite a few chances. In fact, Parthiv has been around for quite some time now. Cheers! Ram

As far as Rahane is concerned he is a promising player and one for the future, also he has shown promise.Parthiv has been getting chances probably due to his ability to play short ball well, and he showed it in England too,so in case on a tour first choice opener is injured he can be a good choice. Both these players are better than Vijay who got much more chances. However they haven't made use of opportunities so far like you rightly mentioned. Yusuf Pathan who is a special talent can be given the job of opening since he always complaints of not getting enough overs, also Sehwag who was not a regular opener was given a chance by Ganguly and John Wright so it may work. Also i was surprised that Mukund was not given a chance in ODIs after he showed so much promise in England.

Rahane has shown promise, but what is concerning me is his habit of throwing away good starts. Also, I am surprised that Rahane does not figure in any of the IPL teams. That way I was surprised to see him play in England. Cheers! Ram

The present opening pair of Parthiv Patel and Ajinkya Rahane has not performed to the expectations. lot was expected from Ajinkya Rahane as he showed a great promise in his inaugural outing in England. The way he got out yesterday to a mistimed hook attempted second time after getting away narrowly with the first one, shows his inexperience But there is great hope on him. He is definitely going to be future prospect for India. As about Parthiv Patel, he started too early for India playing at the age of 16 but appears he may not continue for long. In any case this opening pair is a make shift arrangement due to the injury to key opening pair, Tendulkar and Sehwag. In absence of one of these players Gambhir will fill the second spot of the opener and as rightly pointed out by you kohli should be an ideal one down player. But till the regular opening pair returns I feel the present opening should continue. We can not forget that the strength of English attack lies in their opening bowlers and it is better to shield our key players from their opening attack.

Yes, actually I liked what I saw of Rahane in the T20 match in England. But since then I have been frustrated at the way with which he has continuously thrown his wicket away after getting set. If he continues to do that, then he is not ready to play for the country yet!! Cheers! Ram

Yes, if Sehwag and Sachin return, then they will take their positions. But I guess Sachin would not be around for much long. So we need to find a long term replacement for him. Cheers! Ram

yes ram i am agree with you that sachin will be no long for us in team and we need specilalist opener and what to guess we have gambhir and shewag fit for that place and kholi at no 3 a good postion or might yuvraj be there. but there is need to findd out more opner probably youngster to do that job.

Well, i guess you are right. This opening pair has not been performing well since the England tour. Especially Parthiv Patel's batting is not up to the mark. Why Indian Selector are looking at it? How about promoting Gautam Gambhir up the order and replacing Parthiv Patel with Saurabh Tiwary who is much better than Parthiv Patel. It can enhance Indian batting order a lot.

I think Saurabh Tiwary could be an interesting option. What is even baffling is that Rahane does not play for any of the IPL teams. So he has burst into the Indian team without playing at that level. Cheers! Ram

I think Patel is wasting his time playing cricket. The better partnership in current situation is Rahane and Gambhir.

Yes, I think Patel has got enough chances and he has not taken it. I am ok with having him as a replacement for Dhoni if he is injured. But other than that I am pretty sure that he does not make the team. Cheers! Ram

i think we need to give both the batsman few more chances to prove themselves, both Rahane and Parthiv can play good knocks but they both require some time to set their selves for international cricket ...!

I think at least for Parthiv we have given a lot of chances. He simply has not taken his chances. Also for Rahane we have given him a decent amount of chances. He has shown promise, but tends to throw away his wicket after he gets off to a decent start like he did today. Cheers! Ram

You can fill one slot of the opening with Gambhir but another one ? I think Rahane is good player but he didn't get good time

I think Rahane has showed promise. But the problem is that he keeps throwing away his wicket after getting starts. You cannot continue to play that way at the international level. Cheers! Ram
