This photo shows the ugliest window on my house. This is the kitchen window and the wood frame is rotten to the core. I am getting all windows on my house replaced next week. The draft from this window is unbelieveable too. Having all new windows will save me on my gas bill in the winter as I won't have the serious drafts I have right now. Is your home energy efficient at this time as far as windows and insualtion go? HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB!!~

My hundred year old house is far from energy efficient. It needs lots of stuff, windows would be great for sure. I visited my daughter as you know and they had all their windows on the main floor done and I think it makes a big difference. Of course the weather is not bad just yet, but it seemed I could tell that the house was better sealed. They took out a drafty French door from their bedroom as well, and had a window put in, and the wall filled in. They want eventually to make that a children's bedroom, so it just would not work to have a French door there.

Seems it's going to start getting cold here finally just in time for them to install the windows here. HAHAHA! Been really warm for October so far. So I am ready for the cold. After the new windows are in of course. I love French Doors but have nowhere to use one in my house. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB!!~

I am sure you will get a big savings. Like I said, I could tell the house was better even visiting in early October at my daughter's house. They are having the access window done in the basement because it got to where it would not stay up. They also got the energy grant to do theirs so that helped.

Yep, that window is on its last leg...lol Though we supposedly have insulation and new (about 14 years or less) windows, because of the poor installation, we get horrible drafts and without proper heating, it can get awfully cold in the winter time..So I am NOT looking forward to another winter freezing as I am doing my school work..:(

The windows on my enclosed back porch almost resemble that! All other windows in my house are new, as are the steel entry/exit doors. I won't bother with the porch windows unless I win the lottery or something (fat chance!) but I'm glad for these nice windows. They are the kind that open inward for easier cleaning. Congrats on your new windows, you'll be so much more comfortable! It'll give your dad something interesting to see while they're doing the work, too.

Mine will als all open inwards foe ease of cleaning. All except the triple slider in front. But that will be easy to clean as they come off the track for cleaning. They have to work around him as it's going to be only in the low 40's for high temperature. He gets cold way to easy. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB!!~

The new windows will look fantastic - but the old one has a lot of character. You'll be snug as bugs in a rug! x

Fortunatly my house has proper insulation everywhere. In my contry we take great pains to build houses as it´s a country with great earthquakes. That makes them better as insulation goes too as mine, for instance, is made of brick and concrete over it. The glasses are the kind that have 2 thick glasses with a space between them so that insulation is good.

I think that window needs replacing! My house isn't too bad right now but I wish I had better doors. They're not very well insulated. And the attic could stand some more insulation.

I'm glad to hear you are getting them replaced. It's amazing how much it drains money from the bank to not have good insulation. I need a new patio door window frame or whatever one calls it. Last year when it snowed, two inches got in my patio door on my carpet, in two different places. And I live on the third floor with no patio. And when it is windy the slats of my blinds will blow in the wind. The inspector said she can't make them fix it because it doesn't endanger me. But it it hellish on my bills in the summer and winter.

Yikes! My wife has wanted central air conditioning. I kept telling her we need windows first. So maybe next year we get the central A/C installed. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB!!~

we rent our house off the local authority, in england we call it council housing, I don't know what its called in the USA or Canada. our house is pre world war 2 which makes it over 70 years old, but it has been double glazed and our downstairs bathroom was transformed about 12 years ago into a 'wet room'for my husband who is disabled. People do complain about the state of council housing, but we are quite fortunate. Mind you wrap up warm when they are doing your windows next week, we had ours done in November too and it was very cold, I spent my entire time indoors with my coat on,plus gloves and a scarf. Lets hope your guys are quick but thorough.

I'm not able to see your picture to compare to the horrid shape my windows are in. Hubby is certain our front picture window is rotten, we have so many in bad shape and no money to replace them. I look forward to getting rid of the drafy windows forsure, even better being able to open them.

That's a great idea to change out all the windows. This will make your home more energy efficient. It's an expense but you will make that money back in your savings.

My home is not energy efficient at all. As I said previously, it's mostly windows and you know how glass conducts heat and cold. I use rubber backed or heavy curtains to effect, the cladding is insulated, the roof is insulated, but still, my home is very hot in summer and very cold in winter. I have ducted air conditioning but it uses too much of our precious water and needs new pads as well so I mostly use fans and I keep widows open to allow cross drafts in summer. In winter, I have a wood burning fire which I can also use to cook most things. In summer time, I use fans a lot as they cost a few cents a day only to run.

eh..it's getting there.i still have windows to replace.i did half have the other half to go.been patching the foundation tho-and you wouldn't believe the difference it made.you wouldn't think a dinky lil hole would let in such a draft..

My windows are drafty and so are my doors. I know the back door frame is slightly off because when the sun is shining you can see the sunlight coming in the house. I got some insulation for it last winter, but it has since come off with all the opening and closing of the door. I need to get something for the windows this year too because I am NOT going to be paying those insane gas bills this winter. I can't afford to pay that much.

Hey GB! I guess you answered my question from another discussion as to why you were getting new windows!lol It definitely is worth the cost in the long run! I had also said that my Landlord finally replaced our windows a few years ago and I was happy because in the Winter I would get cakes of ice build up in my bedroom window! I felt like I was sleeping outside! The new windows are better, but still drafty. I live over a full empty basement that is used for storage. I have finally decided after living here 30 years that my Landord must so something to this apartment before I sign my new Lease with a $40 increase for the 2nd time in 4 years! Have some suggestions for them, but don't think they're going to like or agree, but am going to try anyway! Will let everyone know how it turns out afterwards! Wish me luck!!!!

Oh yeah I can see from the picture that the windows are not insulated. Here we have old windows too as our landlord will not upgrade. Although we really can't complain as we do not pay for heating although there are many times he causes us to freeze. Happy upgrading Grandpa Bob, you will be very pleased with the end results.
