When John took me to Mum's house over a week ago now the first thing he noticed upon opening the back door was seeing the new slimline Ellie-Babes! Now, Ellie has always been rather a rotund cat, even when Mum picked her up from the centre, along with her daughter, Soxx in 2006. Soxx has never been overweight because Ellie used to beat her to the food on occasion, annoying Mum no end! Anyway, Ellie's weight became more of an issue about 2 months ago. Mum was sat outside on the bench, Ellie spotted her from the top of the garden and came running towards her. Apparently, Ellie's belly was wobbling and it was "virtually touching the ground" according to Mum. She felt sorry for her and a little guilty about feeding her all this tuna! So, there and then Mum decided to ban BOTH cats from eating tuna in brine, which is the worsed type of tuna you can get for cats but Mum was ALSO giving them Royal Canin munchies which are a complete food anyway, so they didn't actually need the tuna. In my cat's case, she needs the wet food (Whiskas pouches) AND munchies because the former stops the cystitis and the latter reduces the times she is sick. Mum's cats are free to come and go as they please through the window so can eat grass lol. I actually forgot to take photos of the new slimline Ellie whilst I was at Mum's but I can honestly say she's a different cat! She has more energy and when she runs her belly doesn't wobble anymore. She is now 8 years old so I reckon Mum has decided on this diet change at exactly the right time. Have you ever changed your cat's diet for the better...or worse, depending on the outcome?

I'm please to hear Ellie has become a more healthy weight. I had to put The Doctor on a low ash diet after he developed a UTI. I switched him to Science Diet and have never feed my cats Cat Chow except as a low additive if I get a small bag as a donation...

I had 6 cats when The Doctor got sick, and the Science Diet was expensive for me then... I had to go with less expensive food when we went over 20 cats... even tho we had more income, the economy also went south and everything is so much dearer.... I would say that if she's doing well on her current diet and you can afford it, stick with what is working... I'm actually GLAD I was feeding Purina One when all that problem with food from China happened, since it was never recalled, I sure couldn't have afforded 20+ sick cats!

I'm a bit worried about the wet cat food I'm feeding Flojo. Obviously, she doesn't get the cystitis anymore but the food won't be as wholesome for her as the James Wellbeloved munchies..but we have to give her both for the reasons described above. If I were to give her my own versions of wet cat food what would you suggest, or is it a much dearer alternative? I don't want to give her horse-meat all her life.

I have started making my own cat food and it makes the cats more energetic. They also quit having dental infections. I make their food from chicken, pumpkin puree and oatmeal. I also give them homemade yogurt. I have never had an overweight cat, but I did have one with cystitis.

I bet there's no horse meat in there (which is in ALL the bog-standard wet cat-food as it all looks the same) and I'm glad you feed them wholesome nosh. Good for you!

My cat, Tiger, was getting pretty chunky (18 lbs) when he got sick and lost a lot of weight. Now he's a svelte 15 lbs, and I feed him lower calorie food, and put smaller portions down. he doesn't seem to mind too much.

I suppose they get used to eating a little less, unlike dogs who will eat anything lol. Glad Tiger has lost weight, he sounds lovely.

Hello Janey Cats are rather lucky aren't they - just remove that type of tuna and poof, they loose weight :) If it only was so easy for us humans. Anyway Daisy, my feline cat is rather picky about cat food, and only eats a few types. My dad tried to force her to eat a type he bought but he gave up the second day when she ate out of hunger but threw up at the door of the kitchen. Since then we only stick with what we know she likes.

Yes, we're the same with our cat. She won't eat "cheapo" munchies, for example!

The greedy Ellie-babes had food all to herself, small wonder she was getting fat. There are more people who keep dogs than ones that keep cats over here. They seldom spend money on packaged dog food or cat food except the wealthy. The dogs and cats usually eat people's leftovers.

I think it's the same here..more dogs than cats but I could be wrong, it changes so often.

I've wondered about my cat STormy Blue - he eats as if he'll never get another bowl of food again! I got him off the streets when he was about seven months old - after feeding him with the ferals for a couple months. it took that long for him to trust me. he's been neutered and all - shots, too. I already had nearly five year old Rook when I took Stormy in. Rook likes to graze throughout the day. He'll nibble a bit of dry food, a bit of wet food. I use Fancy Feast for both. Stormy will plow through his food and wait for Rook to stop eating, then finish off Rook's food. In the few months we've had him he's gotten quite a belly! I've started limited the cans I open for him throughout the day - I figure he's going to polish off Rook's food anyway. At least so far it's cut down on the amount of litter I scoop each day lol....

It's awkward when there is more than one cat in the household. Since Mum changed the cats' diets Ellie doesn't seem interested in pinching Soxx's food. The turnaround in her behaviour is brilliant!
