laptop is not switched off when closing down

I have a HP laptop which is six/seven years old. Recently I had to change the hard disc. The engineer told that original hard disc are not available and he fixed replacement hard disc. He took around $40(Rs.2000). He has loaded quickheal anti virus- trial version. He told it has to be updated by registering after 40 days. ($20) For the last three or four days my laptop is not switching off fully. It stays in "Windows is logging out..." (I am not able to remember the words). It hangs without closing. Every time I want to close I remove the battery. It closes. Once or twice it said some reporting is to be done. that was also there. I am not sure whether it will log off fully next time I close it. Have you ever had similar experience with your computer/laptop. What are the possible reasons for this.? thanks

When replacing the hard disk, does he reinstalled a full version of Windows, or he simply copied your old installation to another disk? If so, most likely it is damaged or aged out. I think the best remedy to try is a full system reinstall, even at the cost of having to reinstall everything, but you end up with a fresh system to work with. My guesses about the causes are a driver conflict, some bad parameter in the BIOS, perhaps a problem in the "new" HD or improper system configuration or some damaged system file (quite frequent in Windows). One question, if you put it to hibernate instead of power off, does it crashes or hibernates successfully?

Then perhaps some problem or conflict with an installed program. I would discard BIOS and drivers problems then. Maybe some program or service is "refusing" to close and that's delaying the whole process. It's hard to know this way, but it may have something to do with a program you run or you don't run in those 3 or 4 times it closed properly. If it happens again, check if it also happens when rebooting in safe mode, then turn off immediately. And if it continues, I'm afraid the most viable long term solution is a full reinstall of the whole system, just to be sure.

now for the last three or four closures--no issues. hiberation was working fine with no problems. He said he was installing new hard disk and he copied windows xp from his disk. It must be full version and may be not a original one.

yes.chennai is nice. on account of semester exams in engineering colleges, I am having no classes in colleges now. Occasionally I go to banks for taking classes. In the last two months I was having work only for 3 hours. ok sufficient, what to do. establishing contacts again becomes a difficult task.

So you teach at Bank for the employees, sounds that you are aware of many things regarding Bank Jobs,as previously in one discussion u said about the Bank recruitment. Most jobs are filled up for people who are below 33 years becox the age relazation does finish off. Do Banks recruit who are above such age ? yes again establishing contacts and making frineds or gathering friends is a little tough.Anyways life is so.

Honestly, the only time that I've ever had something like that happen with my laptop has been when there are updates that need to be done on it and then it will take quite some time before the shutdown process is completed. It could be that there are some updates that are being downloaded onto your laptop. The only other thing that I can think of that might be causing it is there is some kind of a virus that is running a program in the background that isn't shutting down. I would recommend trying Microsoft Security Essentials on your computer. It is free and it works really well.

Great. I am honored by your responding. Thanks for your response. I cleared temporary files and thereafter I have not faced that problem. Re. Microsoft security essentials -- I have not heard about it. let me try. However whether it will work because I am note sure the XP the engineer installed is ok for it. Luckily I am not facing such a problem now. let me hope so. have an excellent day.

I haven't had such experience, but I think your engineer has not fixed quite well your laptop. There are differences between the work done by engineers and sometimes they doesn't repair the devices so well as we expect.

Use it without the battery. That is the most simple way to fix your problem.

yes. this is one method. using without battery. But the socket pin is so shaky I cannot move the laptop here or there. so i use with battery. further battery if not used gets dried.

Hello ravisivan. I faced a big problem with my lap top about six months back. There used to be a dialog box opening up persistently every few seconds with no reason whatsoever. The dialog box is the 'Sticky keys' prompt that one sees if the shift key is pressed constantly for [I think] five times. Generally it would happen unintentionally & without being conscious of it that such dialog box pops up. And every time, not having triggered anything or not requiring any help, we would simply hit the 'Esc' key to clear the dialog box. It was so persistent and frequent, it was not only annoying but did not allow me to work at all. First a colleague of mine attempted to fix it with all the ideas & knowledge he possessed. Having exhausted his efforts, he suggested [or rather I forced him to come up with that suggestion] to let the experts do it. I had to spare my lap top to be taken to the service vendor [IT firm] and was without one for several days. The vendor diagnosed something and wanted to clean the whole disc [formatting I suppose]. I was too concerned about huge data. I insisted it should be safe. They saved the data on another PC and after fixing the issue, I had to recheck the old data for restoration, which fortunately was handled well and it has been working well after that. Those several days were terribly annoying and I had to face big hardship.

Thanks for your very detailed response. yes. sometimes the problem can be solved only with reformatting. But the present problem I am facing will be sorted our without necessitating reformatting.

Am not too computer savvy so could not figure out why you have this problem. My laptop is not even a month old so it is running fine just now for the net. Only having problems with opening excel files and trying to find out the solution for this.

Glad you have a new laptop. normally all the electronic items work well uptil the guarantee period is over. I am sure there will not be issues for 3/4 years.

I adopted the suggestion to delete unwanted filed and defragment the disk. This time it closed. I have not reused after that.

One of the following cases could be the cause : 1. This problem is generally due to fast shut down registry is active. Solution : Try to open the registry and disable fast shut down 2. Setting in the bios. I've found that the cause is specific setting in the BIOS. Solution : When i return to position of the default bios. Laptop can be turn off 3. This behavior is also often happen when you install some antivirus in one computer Solution : You should be selective to instal antivirus, uninstall it if you have double 4. Device drivers are not compatible, damage or conflict between them. Solution, check the device driver 5. There was an error video adapter on IRQ on real mode. Solution :v replace the VGA card
