writing elaborately versus writing briefly

Facebook , twitter and mylot have come out successful because they do not make people write pages after pages. In fact they encourage people to write briefly and to the point. I like such writings. But a few people write hundreds of words for a matter which can be conveyed easily in say fifty words. Normally I respond for discussions which are not lengthy. Which type of writing do you adopt and like?

Since I sometimes write a lengthy post to give background or to give an idea of what is going on.. I will give the same respect... I will take the time to read it if I find it interesting withing the first few lines. If they don't capture my interest in the first few lines, then I will skip the discussion and go on to the next one. I would expect the same with anyone who came across one of mine. Read it if you want to, but skip it if you don't.

I tend to look at the content rather than the length myself. Sometimes it is necessary to have a long post to give all the information for a discussion.

Lengthy posts are fine when they communicate more points and more details about the a particular issue. First impression is the best impression -- all of us might have heard this. So when the first few lines are not impressive -- you are right in skipping and going to another topic. One thing is good in our forum-- if one want's he can read and post--otherwise he can skip and go further. No penalty for skipping or not attempting. I believe in writing briefly --one reason I cannot write lengthy reports.

GardenGerty: You are more concerned or interested in the content--subject covered in it. If the subject is good you will be reading a lengthy matter also. For me -- if the post is lengthy normally I skip and go for shorter topics. It is like sweets and savouries are there in a buffet table. I take more sweets given the option --but now no.

I will go with Hatley aunty's point. It is difficult to write a matter in one hundred words. Whereas it will be easy to write in 300 or 500 words. That way people who write short postings have to think a lot and put it down. Collect all information required from various sources including net and then use your own words and write. It is possible.

there are different angles to this -- writing about activities wherein we are fully familiar --for example for me - writing about competitive exams, teaching, banking, tamil cinema etc. it is easy and the output also will be very good. But when I write about a new topic as the ones you have given -- sometimes it may be good and many times I may not be able to give full satisfaction to the reader. Hope this applies to all of us. we should select topics with which we are more comfortable.

Hi ravisian: I think both ways are good for writing and it just depends on what you have to answer. If the question is complex it's better to be as much detailed as you can so the person who asks you this question understand your point but if it's easier it's better to directly answer this question. I generally don't use too many words on my answers if they are not necessary. In my opinion, writing a lot of staff doesn't make your answer better in quality. What should matter is the content of your answers, not the length itself. ALVARO

You believe in quality. You do not want to load the answer with more stuff. You answer the questions directly. I have seen your postings. You believe in lengthy writing and brief writing. great.good day

I kind of offended that MyLot was compared to Facebook and to the lesser extent, Twitter. Just saying. More seriously, I think that in general, people don't like to think too much. I think that there are a lot of times where they want to sink their teeth into a topic but not too much so where it overloads their thoughts and makes them think too much. They don't like to read either for the most part in general. Words scare people. Even when writing an article, I have an unwritten rule that I have to keep everything at the very most 2000 words and seldom go over. Granted, you can convey a lot of information in a short amount if you have that ability. Of course there are times where I can go off on tangents and side rants and the result is these long elaborate pieces of writing, that I try to cut down as much as possible. Because getting my thoughts onto paper can sometimes be a convoluted process. I think that if the writing is engaging enough, than it doesn't matter how long or short it is.

Great. you can write articles for 2000 words length also. I normally do not write lengthy discussions. I like in mylot that we can tell elaborately and also briefly depending on the topic of discussion, Many of us feel happy to read short passages.

Fanta also not like lengthy discussion because fanta's English is week and time is also less so read short discussion and answerd it. Skip all lengthy discussion. My discussion is generally small and in simple language I feel this but not know about viewers.

I would prefer shorter discussion and to the point unless there is something that need to be explained or a story that ones needs to convey then I will have no problem longer post.

Hi Ravisivan, I think that will depend on the readerbase. if college professors start to write as brief as discussion posts in mylot, then a lot of students will fail the examination. Impossible to understand a new concept without working examples and case studies, or proper definition. I think for general discussion and ranting, short posts will do. Nobody likes to read pages and pages of complaints.

Yes. We cannot write lessons in short paragraphs. They have written in book form running to several pages. Even in examinations we have a concept - short answers -- these are given to find whether the candidate has understood the subject. Only if he has understood the subject, can he write the points in short answer form nicely. Yes for forums like this many time short forms with clarity will do.

hello ravi, I also do not read lengthy topic, unless it attracts me. It is fine with articles, blogs or writing sites to write lengthy articles as it is needed. But here in mylot, oh no...I am too lazy to read (hehehe)

Probably you have changed avatar. I wanted to post my photo. I am not able to do it. I go to preferences in profile and then select the file. Still it is not getting through. Is there any other way of doing it. The size of my jpg photo is 4.55 mb. perhaps that is more. I also read brief postings and reply.have a good day.

It depends on the topic and the kind of article you are writing. There are things that can be expressed in one or two sentences, and there are topics that need elaboration.

You also follow the norms I have in my mind. I read brief discussions. If I like I respond. Sometimes I do respond wherein I am not that comfortable with the topic --for the sake of friendship.

I prefer the short discussions too. I usually work Mylot in the morning before I go to work. So I don't always have a lot of time to read lengthy discussions and respond to them. I will start to read some of the long ones. If it don't interest me, I move on. Best Wishes!

You also do in a way I manage on days when I go to work. Yes. I attend mylot in the morning before going for work. That means say half an hour or so. After that I will take up mylot again in the evening only say for an hour. I also prefer short discussions- discussions where message is conveyed nicely.

I think writing well is not easy at all. You have to be interesting and to catch the attention of the reader. I'd prefer writing briefly but in order to explain some topics you need to write more words and you can't do it in another way. But it is good to be able to summarize your idea with only the necessary words.

Yes writing is not an easy task. It requires our showing interest in the topic, learn about it and then put it into writing. have a good day.

it's good for everyone to write briefly and straight to the point. Everyone is busy nowadays and they only have a few minutes to spare their attention on one issue/topic/discussion. But we should make sure that what we write is informative and useful to everyone. Not just some random one sentence reply or post. If we can't write anything useful or good then we shouldn't, especially if what we write can possibly hurt others.

Nice you agree to the point that one should write briefly and to the point. However it has to be informative and useful. One sentence posts are not to be encouraged because that makes the discussions felt not so important.

12 Nov 11
It's better to be brief and straight to the point than writing in lengthy texts and be redundant. Although, I personally like reading lengthy articles but when the story just goes round and round, I stop. But no matter how short or how long the article is, it doesn't really matter once you're interested in it. ^_^

You have to write enough to give information that is needed for a discussion, but it is correct that we do not have to put tons of filler information in it.

hi ravisivan you always respond to mine and I am not a terse writer as I want people to really understand what I mean and what I am saying so I do not do short stuff that leaves people wondering what did she really mean? I do write to the point but some points require some clarification in order for people to understand and respond.I do not do two sentence crap as it does not pay here and I want people to understand me when I write. if a discussion is long bu t its very interesting and from a friend yes I will take time to read it.I dislike too short discussions as often they really do not make good sense. I like medium to long discussions myself. I am not lazy and will take time to read a good discussion even if its long. whats with so m any people who cannot take any time here to read something?

Hatley aunty: nice. You have the ability to narrate at length using different words and different points. It makes its interesting to read. I also go with medium length discussions. True --I do not have the patience to read too lengthy posts however nicely they are presented. In fact in movies also --I like movies for 10 minutes or 30 minutes rather than 2 hour movies.

You can't make those sites as examples because they're not writing sites so being informative may not be the main requirement (except for mylot). You can see the "please be as descriptive as possible" in the response posting section. Mylot does encourage lengthy post.

Yes. In mylot one cannot and should not write as in twitter. Here the responses and replies have to be lengthy. Knowing this only our members try to post responses in a lengthy manner. Presentation is also important in this regard. What is to be told first has to be told first.

Premeditated brevity or stretch-o-mania are both inappropriate when the demand of the post is to the contrary. What is more important than the length is the conveyance of complete information, if one has got it. Facebook or Twitter are different from myLot. They have 'status update' and 'wall post' intentionally facilitating brief messages. They are meant for promoting oneself or one's product/service-so called social media marketing. myLot encourages descriptive posts on this forum so that members get comprehensive information. In fact too cryptic comments may sound like chat. I write according to the demand of the topic. Will not curtail at the cost of completeness.

Good--premediated brevity and opposite of this--good . You believe in writing according to the demand of the topic. You want to tell out all that you have on a particular topic. that shows your interest, involvement, commitment, dedication.
