a brutal way to avoid cheating in school

In a school in China, they figured out a way to make the students not cheat on examinations and also not have the ability to have their eyes travel to their seatmate's test paper. They admin of the school make the students do their exams outside, under the burning sun, the chairs of the students were very apart and the students are monitored to make sure no one will cheat. source: http://www.odditycentral.com/news/school-tests-held-outside-to-prevent-cheating.html I dont know if this a good idea, student might not be able to focus if they were under the sun.It doesnt sound comfortable to me.

If the weather is fine, like the photo shows, it seems the place is somewhere. A country with cold weather...then it's fine. But if it this will be implemented here in our country... please please..do it on a covered court.

Ah. Yes, we do have those classes under mango trees... But like you said, at least the mango trees provide shade. Also, I'm sure if they had a choice, they'd still choose to put the kids in a classroom, or a covered place at least. The case of the Chinese above, they chose to put the kids outside...

But even if the weather is fine, or the weather is cold - even if there's a breeze - it is still not advisable to stay under the midday sun. Although, of course, you are right... if it were here... If it were here, the exams would be useless. Because at the end of it, the test papers would be reduced to pulp, saturated with sweat that dripped from the students' face, hands, arms... Or rain...

Since I burn easily and don't take well to the heat. I break out like i'm allergic.. I wouldn't want to be forced to stay outside. What if it is raining outside the day of the test.. or windy and you can't hang on to your paper.. unless it is all done online... still if it was hot.. I couldn't take the sun for very long. Sun screen doesn't do much for me.. I still break out like I have prickly heat.

That is not a good idea for a school administration. Because they teach the student being isolated not educate them... Cheating really a concept of old habit even before or even to those taking a high degree of education... To teach the student not to cheat is a good practice to help them confidence with their self. But the actions of the school is not a good procedure to prevent or teach student not to cheat...

Yup! Instead of creating them confident with themselves. Creating them to be isolated on their own... They are coming to school to learn being independent, confident and worthy of themselves being a man and woman to be a good leader someday. But if they suffer from being mistreated on their age. What we expect with them to be in the future...Chinese government is an example of such values. Where the government identity is hiding of fears that is why they are extremely oppose anyone who criticize their administration... In the private side of the peoples their in China. They are all intelligent in terms of business and appreciate those people due to their broad minded...I only not agree with other rule of china government dealing with their people which is still no equal protection of each individuals...

even if there is no sun,the situation of doing it outside is already uncomfortable, people who walk by are looking at you and there will be too much nuisance and disturbances outside that would make them lose their focus, When you are still a student, what are the ways of your teacher to prevent students from cheating their exams.,

I am a teacher and I would never do that thing. That was too much. The students will not be able to focus on their test with that kind of set up. It also shows that the teachers are not confident or they don't trust their students. It shows that what they think about their students is that some of them are poor or will fail so they would resort to cheating....

In my opinion, albert , this is a ridiculous way to stop cheating. On the first place, one will not be able to focus on the exam because of the heat. They could even get sick by exposing themselves in the sun. They should think of other nice ways to prevent cheating, not this.

Hmm... I have no problem with them being very far apart from each other. But I don't think they need to be placed under the burning sun. They can figure out a way to set up a roof probably... In the future, the news will be... cheating has been successfully stamped out from these schools. Only problem is: there is an increasing incidence of skin conditions...

the article didnt say anything about burning sun.. or kids suffering from heat stroke or sunburns etc. the kids are just simply on the playground that theyd normally be on during recess. omg, such torture!!

Morai you just summed it up for me, aside from Uv rays there other risks factor too, the fact its outside, makes it very distracting, its easier to focus in a quiet shaded classroom,

True, the article did not say anything about burning sun. I took that phrase from the original post above. In any case, you don't need to have suffered from heat stroke or sunburns to suffer from adverse effects of sun overexposure. Here are articles from WHO: - http://www.who.int/mediacentre/factsheets/fs305/en/ - http://www.who.int/uv/sun_protection/en/ And here are some points taken from those articles: - Skin cancer is caused primarily by UV radiation, not just from artificial sources but also from the sun. - Excessive sun exposure in children and adolescents is likely to contribute to skin cancer in later life. - Children and adolescents are particularly vulnerable to the harmful effects of UV radiation. Excessive sun exposure in children is likely to contribute to skin cancer in later life. The mechanisms are unclear, but it may be that skin is more susceptible to harmful effects of UV radiation during childhood. - Fair-skinned people have a higher risk. [These are Chinese children, yes?] - The rise in the incidence of skin cancers over the past decades is strongly related to increasingly popular outdoor activities and recreational exposure. Overexposure to sunlight is widely accepted as the underlying cause for harmful effects on the skin, eye and immune system. - The sun's UV rays are the strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. The recommendation is to limit time in the midday sun. [Isn't 10am-4pm likely to be the school hours when these tests are taken? Unless they do it very early in the morning - before 10am, when sunlight is beneficial - they should provide some protection or cover for the children.] There is a difference between kids playing on the playground in the sun and children taking tests under the sun. The former group moves around and could easily get out of the sun when it becomes uncomfortable. Children takings tests can not get out of the sun until they've finished the exams, which I expect take much longer than recess. Peace!

I can see that it is uncomfortable but then how comfortable should it be for the students to take exam? I mean air-con room seems comfortable but without the kind of chairs like in the First-class plane is still something missing. And let's not forget a nice cold drink during the summer time or a hot drink in the winter. Better yet, if I can watch the TV and listen to music would make it more comfortable... Do I need to give more examples? It is more like we are judging them from the current standard and say that is brutal or cruel but forget that it is just a matter of where we place the judgment line. Maybe the students find it more concentrating because they need to work faster and harder to escape from the sun as early as possible.

I remember my classmates whom I call human giraffes because they stretch their neck to copy answers which is very crazy, with the distances they have apart I think stretching necks wont work. that school is in total martial law for sure. Thank god I dont go to school anymore and I didn't experience something like that. the worst thing I experienced at school is when my teacher forced everyone to do classes on the floor, not on the chair as a punishment.

I'm not sure but the picture shows that this was done early-to-mid morning, between 8-10 AM. This means that the move actually has more health benefits because it is at these times where it's normally recommended that we go out in the sun -- sunshine is one of the rarest ways wherein our body could obtain vitamin D. GIven this, I can't really this move "cruel". (That is, if the exam only happens in the mornings.)

well there are actually afternoon classes too, so it sucks to be the afternoon shift student for sure, China isover populated and some classrooms where used by 3 batches of children a day.

Well, that's true. If this was taken before 10am, then the sunlight is actually beneficial. But I don't know... When I was in school (a long, long time ago) and it was exam time, we'd have, let's say 9 subjects divided into 3 days. So 3 exams in a day, and each exam would take around 1-1 1/2 hours, with an hour break in between. I don't know how things are like in school nowadays, but if it's more or less the same here, then limiting the exam to before 10am would give them only enough time for 1 subject (2 if they start really early). I expect it more likely they do this throughout the day, which means there would definitely be some exams taken after 10am.

Hello CaptAlbertWhisker, This is terrible! There are other ways also to stop cheating but this is not good.School management should think that its their responsibilty in the school to provide kids a good environment. Even i also studied in school and our school management also was very strict against cheating but they never compromised with the environment & we were given the best a school management could give.

I remember I use to have a teacher and I have the hots for her,cos not only she is hot, she have an innovative system of teaching, she is able to make the students memorize their studies even without studying at home. she is so good no one cheats on her class and everyone passes, her style of teacher is really unique, so I remember myself not struggling in examinations on her classes. I think teacher should try to be innovative on their teaching style so the student will be interested on studying and they wont end up as cheaters in exams.

Really? I haven't heard of that news. That is really hard. Under the sun while taking an exam? When we take exams, we feel pressured because we are under time pressure and another is that we think and recall the answers to the questions being asked but then how can we think properly if we are placed under the burning sun. That is so hard.

I have a feeling the pressure these students feel is tripled because its awkward to be outside, I guess if the students studied well they can finish earlier, so they can leave earlier.

Yeah the pressure to think and also the pressure to finish fast. Having to think under the sun is really hard. You can't think very well if you're under it.

wow that's odd.. are they doing it as an experiment or really as a part of discipline??..it's no good since that environment is not conducive how can you focus when you are not comfortable they should find another way to control cheating..obviously it is not correct!

I must say that the teachers are crazy. And it is very stupid to think out this way. It is like a torture rather than having examination. Children are rebelling and it will make them feel bad since the teachers don't trust them. In fact there are many cheating ways, even hiding a little paper inside the clothes can be one of them. So shall them be naked to have an exam later? Stupid teachers! I love China

did this make it inthe news in China? I think its the only school that practices it, I saw someschools in China and the classrooms are big enough, so they can make the students seat apart. speaking of cheating, I have a male classmate who wrote all answers on his palm and a female classmate who wrote the answers on her legs, we know female students wear skirts so she gets to cheat easily.

Hi, When there is a lack of comfort, our mind starts losing it's focus. The battle against cheating is good but the taken measures are inappropriate. Instead of torturing the students by making them sit for their papers under the hot scalding Sun, they can think of other effective and yet comfortable ways to prevent the students from cheating. Like fixing a surveillance camera in the examination hall if that's possible.

I see it as a desperate measure. If the pupils are so determined to cheat then they deserved it. However its unfair to those who do not cheat. Perhaps the school should take a more difficult route to find out why so many want to cheat.

Wow! They must have a LOT of cheating at that school to warrant that kind of treatment. It seems very inhumane to do this. I think if the teacher is doing his/her job.. he/she can look around to see whether anyone EVEN looks like they are trying to cheat.

I thinks its not a teacher's decision ,its more of a school administration's decision, I guess they have high standards. for sure if a teacher is really observant they wont need to resort to something like this.

Talk about learning to work under pressure. This has to be a horrible way to test. I have to wonder what the effect is going to be on the students scores and if the school will stop the practice if it is found the students are not performing well under these circumstances or if they will just continue to push the students in this horrible way. I am sure if they do stop the practice many students will still be deterred from cheating as to keep the school from reinstating the policy.

I think that if the scores come out low the admin will just think that they are successful in stopping the cheating, because no one was able to share answers, thus the low scores. This is actually dangerous. There is such a thing as heat stroke. It is when the body can't regulate the heat anymore. They have dehydrated and lost fluids from too much sweating, etc. It could be deadly.

It sounds too intense but it does eliminate cheating and that was their goal! Maybe they should place some adjustments on this idea because it is a bit absurd! I wouldn't be able to focus in the burning sun, so maybe they could just innovate their testing centers so there are divides between testers rather than go to such extreme solutions! This is a ludicrous idea!
