William Maxwell Patterson, Emery Nicholas Luff, and Zachary Salzwedel-Kemp (all of Kalamath Falls, OR were pulled over for speeding. The officer smelled marijuana smoke, giving him probable cause to search the vehicle. The search produced a bag of pot and paraphernalia, but more significantly, two explosives in canning jars.
The suspects admitted to bringing firecrackers and the two IEDs to the Occupy Portland demonstration in preparation for police attempts to remove them from the park. They admitted to knowing that if the devices were ignited, the glass shrapnel would cause injury.
While there is no evidence that these people used firecrackers against police, occupiers did throw them at police (causing injury) during the removal.
Two of the men were charged with possession of controlled substances and firecrackers, they were released from jail with court dates.
Emery Luff isn't getting off so easy. He's been charged with "Unlawful Possession of Destructive Device, Unlawful Manufacture of Destructive Device and Unlawful Possession of Fireworks." Which could lead to federal charges. He's in jail until his court date.
Portland Police officers have been warned of the possibility of such devices in the future.
This is an escalation of violence in the occupy movement. No, they did not use these devices, and that will save them those charges, however, they did admit that the weapons were assembled for use against police.

There are idiots no matter where you look, that doesn't mean that everyone who holds the same beliefs is radical or stupid and that certainly doesn't mean others rights should be taken away because of the few. No different than the tea party protestors who were arrested for trespassing or the organizer who was arrested for raping a 7 year old girl and found to have a grenade launcher in his possession while putting out videos that the government should be over thrown. In fact the only thing it really means is the bigger the crowd the more idiots you will have.

That being said, I wouldn't support any charges against organizers for this, unless it was learned they had a hand in it.

Another one of your brilliant responses without really answering anything I asked. You seem to be pretty good at skirting around everything or calling people names instead of rationally talking about any subject.
But for the record I can show you a few videos where protestors are tackling and shoving the black bloc provocateurs away from damaging windows and spray painting stores as police in riot gear stood around and let them do it. Is that what you need? Somehow I doubt it would be, even if they showed it on Fox news.

EvanHunter is right, you'll find idiots in every crowd. However, this may turn out to be more serious than the usual rabble-rousers. In New York yesterday a guy was calling for the burning of NY and said they'd find out what a molotov cocktail does to Macy's. All this is supposed to happen today.
Normally I'd chalk it up to idiots but passions are so high and people have been whipped into a frenzy by all this class warfare rhetoric. I hope nothing happens today, the day they have vowed to shut down the NYSE, but I hope the cops are ready and pull no punches. There is no excuse for violence or destruction.

I was willing to go along with the "idiots in every crowd" explanation until the recent violence that went undenounced by the organizers. Sorry, but when members feel free to throw explosives at police, knowing the organizers and their fellow occupiers will do nothing to stop it... they embrace it.

I am glad they were caught and the officer investigated. These type of devices also have a way of backfiring on innocent protestors who have no idea that they might be next to an explosive device.
No, I don't blame the Occupy Protestors for their fringe element. But it is getting dangerous in those camps there is no denying that.

I don't blame the organizers or rank and file for the fringe element either. I blame them for not denouncing the fringe. It seems to me they support the fringe.

This Occupy crowd is nothing but scum in my opinion. And one of them shot at the White House. How anybody can compare the Tea Partiers to this bunch of losers is beyond me. Wonder how Zero (Obama) feels about this scum now? I sincerely hope nobody loses their lives over these weirdos.
