Improvised Explosive Device (IED) found in Occupy Portland Activists' Car

William Maxwell Patterson, Emery Nicholas Luff, and Zachary Salzwedel-Kemp (all of Kalamath Falls, OR were pulled over for speeding. The officer smelled marijuana smoke, giving him probable cause to search the vehicle. The search produced a bag of pot and paraphernalia, but more significantly, two explosives in canning jars. The suspects admitted to bringing firecrackers and the two IEDs to the Occupy Portland demonstration in preparation for police attempts to remove them from the park. They admitted to knowing that if the devices were ignited, the glass shrapnel would cause injury. While there is no evidence that these people used firecrackers against police, occupiers did throw them at police (causing injury) during the removal. Two of the men were charged with possession of controlled substances and firecrackers, they were released from jail with court dates. Emery Luff isn't getting off so easy. He's been charged with "Unlawful Possession of Destructive Device, Unlawful Manufacture of Destructive Device and Unlawful Possession of Fireworks." Which could lead to federal charges. He's in jail until his court date. Portland Police officers have been warned of the possibility of such devices in the future. This is an escalation of violence in the occupy movement.
