Mylot's webpage is so white!

Mylot is a cool website where we learn many random things from other people who live in different parts of the world. As I spent my first two weeks on mylot, I have experienced eye pains which could only be caused by too much computer usage. I started a discussion about 'eye stress' and was quite surprised (no, not really) that many mylotters experience this as well. Now, it made me think that maybe mylot's webpage is too bright. It's white! Maybe a change is needed? How about if mylot provide a toggle to make the background appear black or any darker shade to lessen the brightness to lessen this? (of course you can do that by manually adjusting the brightness on your computer, but others may not have thought of doing that) I'm not sure if that will work. All i know is that it's more comfortable to have a black background than a white background. What do you people think?

I'm perfectly okay with the background color of mylot. I think most mylotters experience eye strain because of too much time spent in front of the computer. That was your first reason right? That could be true to other mylotters as well. It's not because you coincidentally use the same website, it just that coincidentally you spend most of your time in front of the pc. Even if I don't mylot, when I use to work, I get eye strains too, and headaches, from being in front of the pc all day. And I should inform you that CAD (the program we use for drawing) has a black background. I don't think the color matters that much if you spend the same amount of time in front of the computer.

You are right, swirlz, spending a lot of time in front of the computer gives us eyestrain. It has nothing to do with the color

okay, thanks guys! Black background won't reduce eye stress then. Would it be alright to have it anyway? There might be other people like me who are more comfortable with a darker background.

Please take a look at this (old) discussion where I'm sure you will find out that you can change everything on the myLot page to make it to your liking: http://www.mylot.com/w/discussions/2273876.aspx

Thanks for sharing this, it's very interesting. But I don't have problems with the white screen. It's all about the computer addiction:)

With the number of responders to my other thread who also claimed they have experienced eye stress, I believe almost all of us are victims. XD

hehe well i noticed that too before and i am used to dim colors, so i would always tone down my screen's brightness when i am in mylot... but after months, and years of being here.. i guess i have gotten used to it already.. I might not even be able to adjust if it becomes darker... I cannot imagine mylot in full colors! :D

Hehe, no, not really full colors. Just black and white or even gray. They're neutral colors, so the mylot wouldn't have to look too flamboyant. XD

I would have to disagree on that, Aja. I think white is better as you said it can easily be adjusted if you wanted its brightness to be lessened. I am sure people here on myLot knows how to adjust it In my opinion I think a black background could even give us an eye strain. I am still fine with it dear Maybe what we can suggest is to have a design option for us to personalize our mylot page and not only the profile page. In that way, you can use a black background. While I still use a white background

Yeah, that would be good! At least we would be provided the choice for the background color to which we are more comfortable with XD

Yup. I think the site is cool itself but the color should be made more attractive. It's so simple that it's whiteness is kind of painful to the eyes. I wish mylot people will do something to make their site looks cooler.

I think spending more and more time in front of the computer may make some problems in our eyes. I don't think that it would be good to have different colors to different users.

Yeah, it would be bothersome for some people to adjust to the different colors. XD

I do not come on mylot everyday. But I am on the computer the whole day for my office work and I feel the eye strain. I dont think this eye strain has anything to do with the colour here. It may be the brightness of the computer screen too. That can be adjusted by us. We need to rest our eyes more often.

hi aja most opthamologists will tell you to avoid eye pain do not just stare for hours on end at anything on the computer but every half hour or so look around the room then go on about your work. Looking away rests your eyes and you will find much less eyestrain, I find a black background to be the opposite, its tiring to stare at it for very long. you can control the brightness of your monitor by adjusting it. I think white is fine but we addicts need to get up every few hours and do something else for awhile then come back. I have to elevate my legs occasionally if I am on mylot for a long time.

I believe you can change your own computer as you like it to be.

I think that what we can do is to adjust the brightness on our screen and then our eyes won't suffer more, you gave a good idea because eventhought I knew about the adjusting thing I never tried before. Thanks.

Funny how you are posting the same question about 'Eye strain' again and again (I wouldn't bother messing with it anyway LOL). White is for simplicity. You see there is a lot happening on the mylot webpage, hundreds of tabs, dropdown menus etc. It would become impossible in dark colors. Believe me I have tried it on my site.

Yep, i tend to relate my topics to each other. ^^ Many responders have found the white background ideal and good for the website. Haha, I guess I can't force people to bear with color changes for mylot.

I like the white background because it's simplistic and easily manageable. If it were super complex, and hap multiple themes and colors, I feel people would be intimidated to earn here! The fact that the scheme is so plain depicts just how easy it is to earn here therefore it is absolutely suitable for the cause! Long live myLot and it's simple color scheme! :)

Thank you delle! Mozilla add ons huh? I don't know how to use them. And since i'm too tired to try any of those add ons, then i'll stick to mylot's white background theme. LOL.

I noticed that too, but changing the brightness of the screen helps, at least I found it's better for my eyes. I wouldn't say that a black or a dark background is better. I used to read a literature site a lot, its background was dark red with white letters. I can't imagine looking at that all day, after just a few minutes I felt so dizzy.

Red is very painful for the eyes! and white letters make it worse.

I agree. A darker background tone would be nice.
