Tonight I had a choice to make for my dinner, I could have a sad limp salad or jump in my car and drive to the supermarket for fresh salad so I had limp lettuce..I thought with the growing unemployment and all the talk about too much carbon I think it would be a great idea for the Government to subsidise small shop owners like corner shops, fruit shops and little grocery shops, encourage the small business back subsidise then so they could compete with the big supermarkets. The benefits are many, more people could start up a little shop again meaning less unemployment, local people could walk to the shops saving money while getting fresh produce, less cars on the road so less carbon in the air to me it would be a win win situation for all....what do you think...

No here in Australia the little corner shops are all going out of business, they just can't compete, sadly for us all.

Yes, a more level playing field would be much better & fairer. It's interesting to note how much better small businesses thrive under a coalition government than Labor. People might ask where the money will come from for this. The solution is very simple: take it off the meat subsidies & you can easily fund a nation of greengrocers! Better for the personal health, others' health, the planet's health & the government's financial health. I have found limp lettuce to revive after soaking in water for some time.

I would love that. It is so inconvenient when I need something and I have to get on a big busy road and take a 20 minute drive to the stores down the road. It is not that it is far, but there is so much traffic and literally 4 lights in less than a mile that it seems to take so long to get there and it is stop and go the whole time very annoying. Every time we all sit there at lights we are wasting gas and time. I would love to have a couple of small corner shops within walking distance or a short drive where I didn't have to get on that one busy road.

I think you are right. However, I wouldn't hold my breath. Big business conglomerates worked hard to put all the little family owned stores out of business so they could make all that money themselves. Now they are reaping the fruits of their labors. With so many people out of work there is not enough money to spend on their high priced merchandise. It just goes to show. If something ain't broke, don't fix it.

I live in a very small town and we don't have a grocery store, haven't had one for years for this very reason, it's too small to compete with the larger stores only 15 to 20 minutes away from us so if we want anything... like.. we don't even have a convenience store.. we have a post office... thats it. our bar and restaurant closed down last month. if we want ANYTHING even a pop... we have to drive to the next town over! how lame is that?

i'll say that it's a brilliant idea. it will give employment to many. in India this kind of policy is much needed one as we are facing this unemployment problem.
