Where possible I love to eat with my fingers, with things like pizza, toast, chips...I do this at home a lot but if I were to do this at a restaurant or in public, would it be bad manners and rude?

Depends on where you are, I guess. In India, almost everyone eats with their finger, unless it is a hotel or a rich person. I like eating with my finger too, as that's how I've been brought up. In our culture, everyone eats with finger. Pizza, chips, toast, etc. I don't see the harm in eating with fingers wherever you are. as long as you don't put back after biting it, that is.

My wheelchair is always too late. I wanted also to write that it is a matter of culture depending of countries. Africa eats also with fingers, but a well educated person will eat only with 3 fingers and not the hand : thumb, index and middle finger.

You forgot to grease them, that's why. So true regarding not using the hand. In my culture we use all the fingers, not the hand, I think. Since rice is a stable food for us, try eating rice with just the three fingers. It is difficult for me. Or may be I'm not educated enough.

I hope I don't offend anyone by saying this, but eating should be freedom of expression and someone should not eat a certain way just to show that they are 'educated' or more superior to anyone else, eating is a basic need, to have freedom and choice when eating is a great privilege we take for granted.

Let me give you a simple solution. If you can pick something with your fingers, you can eat that thing with your fingers. Same way if what you are eating is too small (e.g. grains) then you need to use spoon, If you will use your hand there then it will be bad manners...lol

I understand your logic, but you would not have good manners in Europe if you were applying it. Here, when you don't know, "look what others are doing" like 3honor said, is the only good rule.

It won't be bad manners and rude to use your fingers even in public or a restaurant if you are eating finger foods. Sandwiches, appetizers, chips, chicken drumstick, french fries, kebab, shawerma, ice cream in a cone, etc are meant to be eaten, using your fingers.

I like that term - 'finger foods' ! I now have an excuse to announce when using my fingers - it is a 'finger food item' I must use my fingers! :)

I agree with the others. There's nothing wrong with eating with your fingers in public places. Here in our country, we eat rice with our bare hands. I don't do it in public, though, because it's kinda awkward, but it's not rude if you do it as long as you are comfortable with it.

I often eat rice with a fork when my mum keeps telling me I should use a spoon! :)

I don't see anything wrong with eating finger-foods with fingers, lol! If you are comfortable doing it, then it does not matter at all. It will be more wrong for someone to eat chips and toast with knife and fork write? It is not rude for as long as you have not done anything bad to others, and not harming them. Happy MyLotting!

I was wondering about this as well - for being the other way round, would it be rude to eat chips with a fork? Sometimes, when there's just too much sauce, I would prefer to use a fork, but I do remember one time when someone said to me 'hey, why aren't you eating your chips with your fingers?!'

I do it at home too. In public, I usually eat chips with my hands, I find it pretentious if you eat chips with utensils. Pizza, it depends on where I eat it, if it's somewhere a bit pricey and everyone eats it with forks, then I do too. But mostly, I just pick it up and take bites from it.

It depends on the country where you live. When I was living in Italy my friends and I always used our fingers when we wanted to eat pizza. In Denmark you are expected to use knife and fork if you eat pizza in a restaurant. I think that it is so much easier to eat pizza with your fingers, but if you do that in a restaurant in my country people will consider you rude and stare at you If you buy a hamburger in a restaurant you are also expected to eat it with knife and fork even though it would be a lot easier to eat it with your fingers.

It depends on the food that you are eating. Some food are fine to be seen eaten with fingers. For the records, according to some cultures, eating with fingers is prefectly fine, regardless if it is at home or in some posh restaurants.

It depends. It would not be considered bad manners and rudeness if you do it at home eating alone or with your family. But if you are in a public place, you have to know that not all people do that. It is better to be eating formally using spoon and fork for manner's sake. Also in other country, like ours, Philippines has customs and traditions eating using only hands.

No, eating with your fingers is not rude especially if the food you are eating is FINGER FOODS. french fries, chips, and canape are finger foods so it's okay to use your fingers when eating, even in public.

oh thats not rude for filipinos because we used to do that when we are at home. Me I enjoyed eating using my hand . . but when we are in the public place like a social restaurant .we need to act in a proper way.

Me and most people I know always do that with those kinds of food you mentioned. My brother always yells at me and my sister because he doesn't want us to eat with our finger, but we just ignore him. Eating some chicken wings with forks is just not the same, a totally different taste.

There's nothing rude in it. Only it makes a difference of culture. But, try to practice whatever you r comfortable with.Dont bother about the public if you think that it doesnt cause any nuisance to the public. In countries like India, everyone eat with fingers, but with one hand. whereas, in usa and other european countries, people use both hands for holding the fork and eating. so that only makes a difference in culture.

Here in Malaysia, sometimes they prefer to use hands or fingers to eat. Most of the mamak restaurant as what they call offers lavatory and soap for you to clean your hands before and after you ate your food. It depends what food I will be eating for me to not use tablespoon.

There is nothing wrong to eat with fingers provides they are clean. I always use my fingers to eat when the need arises. It doesn't matter whether it is at home or a restaurant. Go for what make you comfortable.

Pizza, toast and chips are finger-foods so there's really nothing wrong with eating with your bare hands even if it's in public. Do you know boodle fight? where in you put your rice and viands on top on the banana leaf and you will eat with your colleagues using your hands.
