Having a "duh" moment. I put food into a crock pot and couldn't figure out why

it wasn't heating up. Cord plugged in. So I kept on with the dinner. We're having lentils, pork, apples, potatoes, and spices. After I double checked again. I noticed that the plug looked old, but this is a brand new crock pot (my friend gave it to me so I could cook food while taking a nap). I had plugged in the old toaster oven. I had unplugged it so I could plug in the crock pot and must have turned around and plugged it back in. Glad I noticed it and didn't end up having a nap with all the food in there doing nothing (at room temps, it probably would so something alright, poison us).
So have you every done something and said to yourself, "That was kind of dumb."?
Have you plugged the wrong thing in? What kinds of meals do you like to do in a crockpot? I've only done baked beans before this meal. I think a boiled cabbage dinner might be in our future.

Oh yeah, I have "duh" moments, but lately it has been primarily using the computer. For example, how to fix Word when the format isn't right, (done it many times, and yet I forgot once and had to ask here) or when I go to sign up for next quarters classes, I forget the simplest and easiest way to register and end up taking twice as long..

By now, I have done the sign up so much, I got it, though I forgot to look and accidentally signed up for a mini course, one that takes only three weeks..
So I had to quickly drop and find another one that is at a slower rate..

When I don't do something very often, I tend to forget the best way to do it, esp. on computer. So you're not the only one, take care. Maybe you can write a note to yourself for the next semester?

True, just makes for late meals, in your case by an hour, in some people's could be longer. Like if they came home from work (like an overnight shift), put "it on" and expected it to be ready when they woke up, not good.
Thanks for stopping by and take care.

Many casserole recipes work well in a crock-pot. The long slow cooking tenderizes the cheaper cuts of meat (especially if there is an acid, such as tomato or lemon juice in the liquid) and brings out and blends the flavours marvelously.
There are a few things to remember when adapting recipes:
1) You will not need quite as much liquid as the recipe may use. There is hardly any evaporation from a crock-pot.
2) Root vegetables tend to cook more slowly in relation to the meat, so if you have a stew/casserole which includes raw carrot/potato/turnip/rutabaga or similar, they will tend to be under cooked when the meat is done. Parboiling them for a few minutes before adding them to the crock-pot is generally a good idea.
3) The bottom of the crock-pot is normally the hottest part, so put the vegetables at the bottom, then the meat (which I generally brown first, though this isn't really necessary but I think it adds to the flavour) and finally pour the (heated) liquid over.
This stuffed cabbage leaves recipe is delicious. The leaves should be green (savoy cabbage or kale work well but you may have to cut out the thick midrib before rolling them): http://www.grouprecipes.com/17755/stuffed-cabbage-crockpot.html
This one works very well with white cabbage. I didn't do it with rice - just cabbage and bits of bacon or ham: http://www.recipe4living.com/recipes/cabbage_casserole_with_rice_and_bacon.htm
Perhaps I can't remember or maybe I'm too embarrassed to say whether or not I have plugged in the wrong appliance. Since I've been around for a number of years, I am certain that I have but I can't (for whatever reason) relate any entertaining story concerning it!

Mulled cider sounds wonderful for cold nights here as do other recipes, thanks!

Hello writer. I loved my crockpot when I was working. I don't recall doing any thing like that but knowing me I probably did at least a couple of times. I liked making soup in it as well as regular meals. I would put a pot roast in it with a acorn squash and potatoes or a roasting chicken and dressing and potatoes and have a nice meal when I got home.

I will have to try pot roast, it seems like a very popular suggestiong here. As soon as I can afford one.

It always seems to happen when we are at our busiest, little mistakes, not plugging in the right cord, forgetting to press the start button on the washing machine, going to ask for help because the iron does not work - but actually seeing that I forgot to switch on the little switch on the extension, little things like that, which if you notice yourself just make you shake your hear and think where was your mind but if you have to ask for help and someone else has to point it out to you is just embarrassing. It was a good thing that you noticed in time though, I sometimes feel like doing the kindergarten thing and naming every cable or better yet colour code them so I know which one is which.

Yes, I think being busy has a lot to do with it.
Actually, different colored chords is a great idea. Normally, if I have two items at one outlet, one has a black chord and the other has a white one so this is less likely to happen. Thanks and take care.

OMG! I could imagine me doing that. I plugged mine in but forgot to set the time once so it didn't cook. Just busy and forgot!
I cook all kinds of stuff in my crockpot- soup, stes, meatloaf, roast, etc. We use it a lot when I am busy with things here but know that I want a nice hot meal for dinner.

I think soup would be wonderful. I think I'll have to try a roast and a meatloaft some day, too. Yours has a feature for setting time? Never saw one like that.
Thanks and take care.

I could totally see my self doing something like that in fact I think I have I have a coffee make that sits on the counter right near one of the outlets. It has a white cord and so does my crock pot, I have plugged in the coffee maker instead of the crock pot before. Also when we were having a party once I was out of counter space so I put the crock pot on a padded chair. Suddenly I smelled something burning, the crock pot had melted a padding on the chair. Oops. We needed new chairs anyways.

That sounds scary, reminds me of when my Mom started the wrong burner on the stove and melted some tupperware. What a smell.

mmm boiled cabbage! Shh now you got me wanting some. I've only had it a few tiems but it is Soooo good.
I'm not much of a cook myself but thought maybe some crockpot meals would be good. I'd only do it if I was going to be there, or if I was only going to be gone for a little while.
Soups, stews... mmm.. dips.

Dips, hadn't thought of that one. Like dipping sauces or fondue?

Oh man, I did something like that once. Got up early to prepare the crock pot and set it all up so it could cook all day, crawled back into bed and fell asleep for like three hours, woke up and it was still cool. I was sad, and dinner was delivered late that evening. I've since learned to a) never do any food prep while half asleep and b) double check crock pot is on before climbing back into bed.

Both points are very good ones and very true. I just did it again today. I wish the two different items had two different colored chords. Luckily I noticed it quicker this time.
