Weird groups of people...

I was responding to a discussion about this weird group of people about 20 years ago. But last Christmas the roomie and I were at Walmart and we ran into another bunch. Oh, they sure didn't run anywhere near the "weird" factor of the first bunch, but they certainly got everyone's attention. They were group of about 10 young people and they were walking through Walmart singing in harmony. I kind of suspect it was one of these new "praise" songs that the Protestants have been writing lately, but they had lovely voices and they were all smiles and cheer. Is this a new way that people are trying to win souls? I'm not one for overt displays unless provoked, so I would never do anything like that. Have you ever seen anything like this?

I've not run into this type of group. I think my little town is too small to attract the weirdos in numbers. But I can go out at any time to the grocery or library or wherever and see weird people. Or maybe I should say that people that behave in a weird manner.

Oh, Austin has always had strange ones, heck - I used to be one of them! But I NEVER walked around singing in harmony with a bunch of other people in Walmart!

I've never seen or heard of anything like it. Maybe they just came from choir practice and were in really good moods.

I kind of suspect it might've been a youth group from some church who sang or something.

No, i've never encountered the group you described, but it sounds a lot more pleasant than the screaming kids I usually run into at WalMart. Actually, I don't run into the kids, but they sometimes run into me.

I hear that about the kids running into ya, I can't begin to tell you how many times I see kids walking one way and looking the other. And it isn't just kids that do that!

hi bellis and Elic I was banged into the back of my knees by someone with a grocery cart, the second time I whirled around and said :\"please do not do that again. that hurts." The woman muttered something that sounded like Spanish and moved off. I still do not know why she ran into me as I was not in her way at all.But when I got home I looked and had a big bruise behind my right knee from where the cart had struck m e.Odd as I w as not any where near a check out stand. perhaps she had a cart that had locked wheels. she never apologized either.

perhaps its a new type of caroling for this age? thats what i would think. but i think it sounds quite happy. id likely enjoy the cheer. theres so much of bad/mean things these days. id think it refreshing.

Well, that would be nice, better than opening your door to a stranger... It was a change from the howling babies and stuff so I liked it, not something you normally see in the stores.

No have have not seen groups of kids singing in harmoney at walmart but i have seen my share of wierdos. In NYC a weirdo appears every 15 to 20 seconds. Wearing strange garments strange hair color singing, dancing, standing still, doing backflips and all. The spiritual wierdos usually preach at an unusually loud voice to moving crowds that are not paying attention and keep walking. The singing in wallmart doesent sound bad though being that they were kids and all.

Back in the 1980's we had the "punks" who did that, I heard someone refer to them as "exotic birds" with their dyed hair and strange 'dos

One of the most interesting and weird/funny things that I ever have seen did happen in a Wal Mart. This is back when they had snack bars. I must have been at work there or on a break having something in the snack bar. This group of four people came in, 20-30 years old. I knew some of them. It was a prank by one of the young ladies. She was a staff member at the Christian College, a zany person. The other young lady was a photographer for the college. They were taking pictures of something in the store. . . Christmas shopping or something. I did not know one young man, the other was the director of our church choir. Rather a stuffed shirt type guy. All the sudden the zany whips out a starched white tablecloth, fine china and table service. She had stemmed glassware and filled it with sparkling drink. I do not remember what she served, but it was fun to watch. The photographer, of course, got to take pictures for the college newspaper.

Huh... I bet that was fun, but I've never seen a Walmart with a snack area, tho we did have Walmart before they got McDonald's in them.

hi ElixBxn well in Walmart one can meet just about anything but I saw this group of young people who evidently were into bringing the goth style back again. they all wore black stocking, black tee shirts and pants. White face makeup that if you really looked like that someone would rush you to the nearest ER. Their hairdos were what got me as they had painted some kind of stuff in their hair and brushed it into a cockscomb of black mixed with red and gold. well if they desired to get attention they sure got mine. and with the white make u[p they had that goshawful dark red blood looking lipstick. I swear they gave me the screaming memes and I was out of that store as soon 'as I could get waited one. I never was much for the Gothic look in the first place and to see it being rehashed was not much fun.

I think those Twilight movies have brought that look back. This woman I know went and dyed her hair black, bought the goth clothes, told her husband once that he didn't love her like "Edward" would. Kind of freaked me out. I know there are people that like that style but it's not very common here so when you see it, it can be a little surprising.

back in the late 80's or early 90's, I was picking up Maggie from work and we both, separately, saw this bunch of people. They wore all black, black pants, black trench coats (and it wasn't that cold) and had black hair and, the weirdest thing of all, was they all walked in step, not marching, but stride for stride with each other... we were glad we never saw them again!

Well i wouldn't call that weird, I mean weird to mean denotes something that society in gneral would find wrong. While some may find Carolers, which is what I call this, wrong, I don't think it should be categorized as weird. I've seen some weird things, especially at walmart though.

I wouldn't call them carolers, because they weren't singing what I recognized at Christmas songs. I can't honestly say for sure that they were "praise" songs even, never heard that much as they walked around -

I have never seen anything like that, but it sounds like it would be nice. People get so caught up in shopping now that a group of people singing would bring back some of the spirit of Christmas. I myself would never do anything like that. Even if I would I can't sing at all.

I fear groups that I don't understand. I would take little time to listen about them or bother what they are doing.

I've never seen anything like this but my guess would be since it was around Christmas time, they were doing some sort of caroling! My friends and I do lame, weird things in public too and if we all had beautiful voices, we would do some crazy thing like sing while walking in Walmart! I'm sure theynhad a purpose or a sensible cause but that would be very random, if I saw people grouped up singing loudly while in the company of more people especially in public! It's very cool that you've witnessed this, because I surely haven't yet!

I wouldn't exactly call it caroling, since they weren't recognizable Christmas carols, but they were singing. I do live in a large city - 14th largest in the U.S. now - and I guess I have to expect weirdos to show up...

Mm, suspicious. Sounds like some campaign thing to me too. And if I do see a group of people like this, its fine unless they come near me and sing in front of me. That would be extremely awkward for me to handle. BUT. Sometimes. When I'm with my friends, and were bored or having too much fun. We sometimes couldn't control but sing and laugh like we're the only people in the world. haha..

They never stopped walking while they were singing and pretty much stopped singing the one time I saw them stop walking too. I know I wasn't the only one looking at them, I saw lots of folks who probably didn't speak English watching them too.

I haven't seen anything like this but I've heard of people singing in malls and such. I think it's a much better way, if they are religious, to spread the word than to stand shouting and cursing humanity. That doesn't win anyone's heart except the sheep looking for something to fear and follow. I'd much prefer to hear the singing and praise if they have to go out preaching. Sounds like they were having a good time and providing some pleasant experiences for people. Whether is was religious or not, I think that's a very nice thing to do.

I haven't seen anything like that but a couple of weeks ago I saw something that made me super uncomfortable. I am used to seeing people with signs that say "The world is Ending" and used to people on the corners holding up signs about Jesus. I am in the bible belt and it is not so uncommon to see someone walking down the sidewalk carrying a cross across their backs especially at this time of year..BUT this one guy was walking down the highway with a sign. I thought it was a religious statement...used to that..but it wasn't. He was dressed in army clothes carrying a sign saying China will invade us! No smiles and cheer on him for sure. Now the Walmart here...that is a whole different beast where weirdness is concerned..lol...I hate going to Walmart here.

That would be scary, and very weird, at least he was alone! Yeah, we had a guy dragging a cross down the street for a while, but he moved on.

hi Elic Bxn I saw that guy on television and he has covered the Us and several other countries walking with that cross.I would think he would wear out after awhile but to each his own I guess. what gets me in Walmart are women who are as overweight as I am but dress in styles and clothes only slim women can get away with.they looked gross with the flab showing in rolls at their waists wearing skin tight tube tops and short shorts.yuck. it was really gross. They did not seem to know how they looked. One even showed the thong she was wearing as it rode up above her shorts. disgusting to me. I mean sure I am overweight too but I cover it up ,I do not flaunt it as I anm trying to lose it. I feel ashamed for them when they dress like that.
