Should those who can afford health insurance, be required to have it?

GOP debate question: "Healthy 30-yer-old young man has a good job, makes a good living, but decides 'you know what, I'm not gunna spend $200-$300/month for health insurance because I'm healthy, I don't need it.' But something terrible happens and he all of a sudden needs it. Who's going to pay for it if he goes into a coma, for example?" "Are you saying society should just let him die?" THE CROWD CHEERED AND SHOUTED "YES! YES!" I feel that if you can afford it, you should have it, but if you can't, that it should be available. There are many people who, by no fault of their own, cannot afford health insurance. What do you think?

Hi nanajanet, life is very uncertain. None can say life will go same all along. It is foolishness to proud for health. Our body is like machine. Any time one of the parts of the body can be in trouble. So it is wise to make an health insurance. If anyone fears to spend $200-$300 a month for health insurance. He or she may have to spend lots of money to save his or her life. We all have limitation to spend money. I'm not saying about millionaires. Certainly general people should have health insurance.

Every individual has the right to own a health insurance but for those who are financially constraint hinders them to have one. But for those who can really afford why not have one? If the time comes like the story you narrated. He doesn't have any health insurance then he's now facing the consequence. His family should settle this and use his savings (if there any) for his medication. Poor man, he should have spend his money for his future wisely.

No, no-one should be forced to pay insurance companies who inflate the cost of medical treatment to line their own pockets Far better to have a system like ours of national insurance and a national health service which provides equivalent treatment at a fraction of the price of insurance based health services all the best urban

hinanajet I think we need universal health care like all the other nations that already have it. for right now I as a p oor senior citizen say damn right pay the insurance you idget and be damned glad you can afford it. as for the rest of us lets get Universal health care. no it wont make us socialist but it might save a lot of lives. I am so fed up with fear mongers saying all that trash. Canada has it and they are socialists at all. We all need inexpensive health care.

i think everyone should have it. those that can afford it pay for it what they can afford. those that have nothing and barely making ends meet, like my poor daughter should get a certain amount of assistance for important things. i wish we had a plan like canada or some other nations

Insurance is very expensive and I am quite torn about the way things are here. I think that we should all take proper precautions but there are alot of insurance companies out there that take advantage of their customers. They might even find a reason to deny him although he had already paid a ton. I don't think we should let someone die because of their choice to not carry but I do think that they should have it if they can afford it. I also agree that it should be available to those that can't afford it.
