son and I was just discussing people like the one daughters fiance in our house, that cant seem to keep a job and dont seem happy to work any where. I mean hes had 5 different jobs that hasnt worked out so what does that sound like when so many are screaming for and holding on to dear life their jobs these days. I was telling him about how my dad used to say about his dad,(dont jump on me for this we have discussed it and hes the first to say how lazy his dad is) anyway, my dad used to say "he wouldnt work in a pie factory if he got all the pie he could eat"!
and people used to say that about lazy people. my son busted out laughing, saying where the heck did they get such a saying? i mean, did people that used to work in a pie factory start saying, "wow, this is the easiest, best job ive ever had?"!!
so i thought of it when someone mentioned another old saying on my other discussion. Do you ever wonder about really crazy old sayings like that?

I never heard that one but a similar one I heard was you couldn't get me to do that for all the tea in china. Yep young people especially are lazy down where I live too, they seem to want the moon but none of them are trained to be astronuauts if you know what I mean

Well, I wouldn't call it a CRAZY old saying but I was just discussing this with my son earlier today: where did "cute as a button" come from? I mean, the thing is, not all buttons are 'cute', you know? Some are downright ugly! Okay, most buttons are plain and some are pretty but you just don't see too many cute buttons (except maybe on childrens clothes) so where did that saying come from? We were discussing that because I told him that I think his girlfriend is cute as a button. She's really attractive and small so....
I guess I'd have to say that, if she WERE a button, she'd be a really cute one.

I hated this one when I was little. my uncle told me I was as
cute as a "bug's ear" now what on earth is cute about a bug
or its ear? Now it was not too bad when my grandpa used to
say " she's as busy as a little hummingbird" because I had seen hummingbirds and they were really pretty.

That's funny but I think i actually understand that one. Did your grandfather love pie? My mother used to be famous for coming up with some really strange sayings. One was "Holy cow corliss" and another was, "you kids drive me up a tree without a rowboat." Now I'm sure that was up a creek without a rowboat but she always always said "up a tree".

I think it happened a lot with my mother. Either that or she was just so worked up with us kids that everything just came out all wrong. We'd all get giggling so at her sayings and that would only serve to make her even more irate than she already was.

hi dear bunnybon still playing catch up here but seeing some light at the end of the tunnel. LOL.
That saying of your dads is a really good one. Not only cause I love pie but its among the forbidden delicacies for me now as I am diabetic.
How are you doing now, dear bunnybon hope your daughters fiance will hold a job by now and see he has to be a bit more responsible when he wants to marry her and hope you have great Christmas Days ahead.

oh bon my heart goes out to you. It must be sad to see your daughter making these poor choices and you just stand there and cant do anything as she is an adult and will make her own decisions. Hope the day comes soon when she sees what this man is doing to her.

My step-dad had a old saying that he used alot on us kids saying "you won't amount to a hill of beans" Well I have learned when nurtured a hill of beans can be pretty great and make a whole heck of a lot. SO that is a crazy saying for me to think about..I know about the job thing..my nieces man is like that always blaming other people for why he quits but really it is own downfall because they are in need of money and always begging for it to keep their bills paid or diapers bought..you'd think with a newborn he'd stick his nose to the grind stone and deal with the problems no matter what since he needs the work and money.

oh I love it bunnybon. My dad used to say about someone who]
was not very intelligent," He wouldn't know beans if the
bag's open" I have never ever heard anyone else use that
expression. And my grandpa used to say of someone who talked
and talked and never made his point"the man went all around John
Brown's barn and never did find the door". And my dad when He
was exasperated about something he would never swear just say this "Oh for the love Of Pete!!!!" I never did hear my dad ever say damn or s.hi.t.e and oh my G if anyone in his presence no matter who they were did take the name of the Lord In Vain He would really
fly off the handle. thats my old saying by the way. I never did understand just what it meant except to express someone being really angry and losing it. I always envisioned someone holding a hammer and getting mad and throwing it so the handle flew off. lol. great discussion as we all have some crazy old sayings in our families. my mom when confronted with something new would say "Oh my I never heard tell of it." oh yes and she had a cat that would sneak in when she was talking to someone at the front door and she alwaya would say ,"oh that damned Cat" so one time when we went to visit my mom, we were opening the front door carefully but the cat still snuck in, and my hubby with a very straight face blurted out"Oh that damned cat" just at the same t ime she said"Oh that damned Cat". then they both started laughing and of course the cat jumped on my husbands lap.He loved cats and dogs and kids.

My father's favorite saying was: convince a man against his will, and he'll be of the same opinion still.

I love hearing them. Shows alot about our past and how people think. Some days are full of sayings and others are devoid totally. Sort of funny that way. Can't think of any right now. I do wonder about some of the sayings I hear. Don't understand them and find myself wondering.

Hiya bunnybon,
Once I worked a morning in a Sausage Factory I can guarantee that if you had had the Morning I had there you might not want to go back and work there again.
I did try to work as hard as I could but he put me on the hardest Job there was so I quit after asking him again to put me in the Job he said he was going to but he said he could´nt.
So I would not blame that Man for saying he would´nt work in a Pie Factory even if he could get all the Pie he could eat.
That is how I felt after I got out of there after just a morning the conditions were really disgusting and I also never tried another Sausage Roll in years after that after I saw how they made them.xxx
In a way I have to agree with that statement of his

Hiya bunnybon,
He wanted me to do the Job a Man should be doing I almost dislocated my Back trying to do so on top of that he more or less thought I had to take a kind of allegiance up with the Factory for having a Job.
He reckons how dare I quit just like that? So I quit right under his Nose he said you won´t get paid and I just left the uniform and everything there signed myself off and never went back the smell of that place stayed with me for ages too.
Some of us put up with disgusting conditions to be able to pay for a place of our own that was one that I just could not put up with the Floor was so slippery with grease unbelievable.xxx

That was really funny, I have heard of such thing to... depends on where a person works and they start saying if you can take home all those things you're company is doing then you can work there til you're old.
these days, it is really hard when one has no work. so I think we should really love our job. no matter how hard the job is as I long you enjoy it and we can pay for our food and bills then we should take care of it and work hard.
