"Bate and switch" jobs or work assignments on you.

I was so glad that Friday I got the work assignment that they had called me for. Sometimes when you sub, they call you for a job you want, then you get there and the job you don't want is what they give you. Examples: I love teaching reading, but if a reading teacher is out and a regular teacher is out, they have to fill the regular class position. They can cancel the reading teacher. So I've gone in for reading and ended up teaching regular class. I wouldn't mind, but it's usually a regular class that nobody wants. Music, I went in there for music. I had just read that we were going to sing with a DVD all day. I was really "up for it." Then I received a call, they made the music teacher come back to work and I had to teach regular class because the regular teacher was out sick. The music teacher just wanted the day off to work around the house. Again, a regular class that nobody wants. Those are just two examples. But Friday, I had these wonderful, hard-working kids that are a joy. So have you ever been told or called-in for a job and instead you get a different job? Was it a job you liked better or one you didn't like and maybe one nobody wants?

At my last permanent job I was often given stuff to do that no one else wanted. Sometimes I liked it, when others did not, other times it was just too much. It was burn out that made me completely leave when I had my foot surgery, because I would try to do a good job or "die tryin" and I needed to learn to say "no". I volunteered in a classroom and the teacher was on a curriculum committee or something. She had to be out of the classroom regularly, like maybe every two weeks. That particular year she had a really challenging class and they could not get the same substitute twice. Yikes.

I was in a first grade where we never got the same sub 2xs, but we weren't a bad class. I don't know what happened there, but I didn't know whether to underline, circle, cross-out or what to do as a little kid. I had no skills for 2nd grade nor did many students. They failed a bunch of us the next year. It's not good for the teacher's or the students. In your case, then they wonder why they can't keep help. You volunteered and that much trouble. Wow!

That particular year all the new students that moved into district ended up in her class, because that is where the openings were. These sub's were many of them new, and had no clue. I, on the other hand, had done child care for the one little boy that was the biggest problem. I would say his biggest problem was his dad, but that is a different story. The teacher herself told me that he was the reason many people refused to come back to her room a second time. She was very experienced and did okay with him, and on days i could come and help with reading circles when there was a sub, he did okay. Otherwise he physically mistreated the subs. He needed the consistency and it just so happened that this was the year she was basically told she would be on this committee. She managed her classroom by engaging in extra physical activity whenever possible. It helps with wiggly boys.

In NYS, students like that get either 1 to 1 teacher's aide or must be taught at home. At least in this area of NYS anyway.

it can happen especially if you are working on projects; happens to me quite a lot because i would develop a liking to one of my projects and the people in the project then i would be pulled out to help on other people's project or to supervise, well i guess it really depends on the kind of work/career that you have.

Working on projects must be interesting. True, it depends. Thanks and take care.

My job is pretty much the same every day, so no bait and switch for me. Sometimes I wish I could go to work and do something other than what I am supposed to do, but that is really not possible.

Trust me, bate and switch when they give you the worst job is not great. When no one else wants the job, there's a problem there.
