The Late Late Show

Hi kiddies, Does anyone else like to watch The Late Late Show hosted by that mad Scottish character Craig Ferguson? I think the unscripted rapport between Craig and the robot skeleton Geoff is priceless. And Mr. Ferguson himself has a fluent comedic style that I find very engaging and often quite hilarious. In fact, the best parts of the show are his solo diatribes with interjections by the skeleton. All the rest, including the guests, I can take or leave, IMO the host is the show's strong point. It's a complete contrast to The Late Show with David Letterman, which I find rather tedious, contrived and unfunny. Do you get The Late Late Show where you live? What do you think of Geoff and Craig?

I think that I used to watch Craig Ferguson some years back. If he is the person I am thinking of, I really liked him. I have not watched him for some time for no particular reason. I work nights and do not get home until 10:30 p.m. I then watch Nightline and some of Jimmy Kimmel before going to bed. I just checked my Interactive Guide and CF is on very late. His show begins at 11:37 p.m. my time. By that time, I am trying to wind down and am sometimes already in bed. I had forgotten about him but I will keep him in mind next time I am up very late. I remember liking him.

Hi bostonphil, Hope the weather's good there in Boston. Funnily enough, The Late Late Show is on fairly late here too. But it's on before the Late Show with Letterman. Needless to say, I watch the former and skip the latter. I imagine watching it would help you to sleep better - going to bed with a grin, so to speak.

Actually, I am in Austin, Texas and the weather is freezing. Literally. Right now, it is 31 degrees. I love it! My apartment is nice and warm and comfortable. I am a Bostonian by birth and identify with my New England heritage. I also have a very strong Boston accent. Craig Ferguson begins at 11:37 p.m. here -- usually that is a little too late for me. I went to bed right after nightline yesterday, about 11 p.m. Right now, it is not yet 6 a.m. and I am watching Imus In The Morning or listening to it while I type. You mentioned sleeping. I am a severe insomniac so there is no guarantee that I will ever sleep. I never know. My sleeping is unpredictable.

Hi again, How about that - Austin rhymes with Boston. You might be a night person - which would mean your circadian rhythm will constantly fight to keep you awake at night and make you sleep in the daytime. I have that exact condition - not medically diagnosed or anything, but I know that no matter what I do, my sleeping habits always gradually creep around to staying wide awake all night and being sleepy and tired all day. I don't think it's poor discipline or a matter of choice - I think it's basic to a person's makeup - some people are day people, and some are night people. Anyway, even though I don't usually go to sleep afterwards, The Late Late Show invariably cheers me up. Might do you too.

To me Craig Ferguson is the best late night talk show host. It's a shame he's on so late so it's hard to stay up for but then if he was on earlier, he would probably have to clean up his act. To me Jimmy Fallon isn't funny, Jay Leno tends to be whiny, and I can't get into Jimmy Kimmel. To me, when it comes to a serious interview, Letterman does the best job. One problem with late night talk shows today though, is that the shows used to be 90 minutes long or longer. Because the shows were longer, the guests had more time to be interviewed or to perform. On the old tonight show with Carson, it would be common for a singer to do a song or a comedian to do a routine, then go over to the desk and be interviewed by Johnny. Also the shows had couches so the guests would hang around for the next guest to come out. It was only the newcomers who would perform and then not get to be interviewed. Today you'll see established stars like Neil Diamond come out and do a song and thst's it. Now the interviews basically go,"oh, you've got a new movie, let's see a clip", "How are the wife and kids", "Yeah my kids like that", "So long, good luck with the movie, come back again." The current format for talk shows is to short and too stylized. Star with openign monlogue, commercial, small talk, additional comedy or short skit, commercial, guest appears and leaves, commercial, musical guest, thank you good night. I guess the big problem was when the salary for a Johnny Carson went through the roof. The one way to appease him was to pay him the big money but shorten the time of the show so he didn't have to work as hard and also it helped cut production costs. Wouldn't it be nice to have a guest talk for more than 5 minutes?

By the way, did I mention? Chili beef & bean burritos are the most delicious food in the Universe!

Robin Williams is rather zany and manic. He did a lot of stand up before making it big as an actor and he did have an act which at times was vulgar. There were also other comedians who accused him of stealing their bits but i think if that happened, it was due to him seeing other acts and spontaneously spurting out their jokes. Ferguson is certainly not the kind of guy for a serious interview and I doubt that many political candidates will ever visit his show like they would with Leno or Letterman. Regarding musical guests, I wish they would interview some guests like a Ray Davies of the Kinks sometime rather than just having them do one song. The Kinks were my favorite band growing up until they were banned from appearing in the US. I've more recently rediscovered them and realized how great a song writer Ray was and how great a guitar player his brother Dave became.

Burrito was a nickname I picked up due to my lack of athleticism shown in a baseball game one afternoon. The person who named me that thought that the Flying Burrito Brothers were a troop of acrobats (he probably meant the Flying Wallendas who walked tightropes.) The Burritos were an early country rock band made up in part of former members of the Byrds. They helped pave the way for later bands like The Eagles and Loggins and Messina. The Burritos were too country for rock and too rock for country so they are under appreciated. I am a fan of some of their stuff though. And I do like burritos as well as a good fajita.

I've never heard of that one and haven't seen it in my listings but it would be a big improvement over what we have now. Letterman is a mean man..I was watching him once because I couldn't sleep and was shocked at how nasty he was to Richard Simmons. Simmons has helped thousands of people lose weight, is very supportive and Letterman badgered him till there were tears in his eyes. I've seen Letterman interview others and he's very biased and really combative. I don't need that. I'll look for The Late Late Show and mark it for next time I can't sleep. I could have used it last night!

Hi dragon54u, I agree, Letterman isn't a likeable character at all. He definitely has talent as a one-on-one interviewer, but all in all his show isn't compulsive viewing. Maybe it was 20 years ago, but not now. I think Richard Simmonds is a glutton for punishment. Every time he appears on The Late Show, Letterman goes out of his way to humiliate the poor man. Yet he keeps coming back. If I were him, I'd blacklist Letterman from my schedule. As for The Late Late Show, it seems to be more about just having a bit of fun. It's a simple formula - maybe it'll get tired after a year or two, but for now it's a real breath of fresh air.

When you stop to think about, most of the comedy on late night TV is done at someone else expense. That's why Letterman does jokes about Richard Simmons, Regis Philbin, and others. Craig Ferguson was always on Bob Barker. Anytime anybody famous does something stupid or wrong, all the talk show hosts gang up on them.

No, but I wish I did. I can't stand Letterman, he's so pompous and full of himself. Ever since he got into trouble with his love life he just seems uncredible to me as a talk show host. Is Craig Ferguson a comedian, or an actor? Name sounds familiar to me.

Hi Fortunata, There seems to be a sub-theme emerging in this thread - no-one has much time for David Letterman. Can't argue with that, I don't particularly like him or his show either. As to Letterman's love-life, it puzzles me as to what a woman would find so desirable in Mr. Letterman as to want to fiddle with his naughty bits. Argh - must purge mental image... But The Late Late Show is like the polar opposite of The Late Show. Ferguson is a quite talented comedic actor. He had a part in The Drew Carey Show as Carey's English boss (although Ferguson is plainly Scottish). I imagine he could make a good living from stand-up comedy if he wanted to, though being a talk-show host is probably sufficiently lucrative.

Craig Ferguson does do stand up. He often mentions what casino he's appearing at. If they do his show like they used to do many shows, they would record 2 shows on Thursday which would free him up to go someplace and perform on the weekend.

Craig is my favorite talk show host! I also love Conan and I really like Jimmy Fallon. It took me a while to warm up to Fallon but I think he's definitely improved and I always enjoy his interviews. I was actually talking with my dad a little while back and we were discussing talk show hosts and he said his favorite is Conan, and I was saying mine was Fergison. He said he hasn't seen any of his interviews before.

Hi Lucyalicia92, Isn't Conan the big dude with a sword and a bad attitude? Can't say I recognise Jimmy Fallon, but no doubt others here on Mylot will. Just the name sounds like a talk show host (or a mobster - or both). I find the most entertaining part of The Late Late Show is just Ferguson and Geoff's monologues / dialogues / interaction with the audience. I can generally skip the interviews (I don't think interviewing is Craig's strong point, actually). The other funniest part is anything to do with Lesbian Row, eg, "What are you looking at, Lesbians?". It shows they've got the right balance when they can relentlessly rib the audience and still have everyone in good humor.

Hi again, You young whippersnappers, don't you know anything?!?!? Conan was Arnold Egg&BaconBurger's first big movie role. Suited him down to the ground. Non-speaking part. Lots of flexing and posing. Just doesn't sound right for a talk show host.

what??? thats not Conan at all, if you like Craig you'll also love Conan. I have no idea which interviewer has anything to do with a sword but now I'm really curious about that. I think Conan is much better at interviewing than Craig, he's really funny and friendly as well.

Craig Ferguson is like an undiscovered treasure. He just does what he wants to his show and if someone watches, great. But he's going to have fun no matter what. If I can stay up that long I like to watch it when I can. His monologues are so funny. And he's a good interviewer too. He's so much better than David Letterman. David Letterman - ick.
