Another sick cat

The other night I noticed that one of my cats was looking puny. By that time it was too late to run her to the vet, so yesterday morning I grabbed her up and ran her off to the vet. They drew blood (she was so dehydrated that she barely gave them any) and then gave her a shot of meds and fluids. Well, the good news is that she isn't in kidney or liver failure, but seems to have an infection that has her nose stuffy so she isn't interested in eating or drinking. So, here I sit with a load of pills, meds and fluids to give this cat. I don't wish ill on this cat, but I have to say, that if I were to lose any cat, this is one I wouldn't miss! She's just an ill tempered blue! Don't you wish you had MY problems?

That attitude seems to go with the blues, doesn't it? No, I do not envy you having to give meds to the cat. We went out and got a fresh supply of "Greenies" the other day. My cats are addicted. Nothing wrong with their smellers, they can smell the bag and you would swear they were pointers the way they try to direct attention to get THAT bag off of THAT shelf. NOW. If I ever end up giving cat meds again I am going to hope I can disguise it with greenies.

My first bag I go was free, and I promptly forgot it, until Tiger "treed" it. I do not buy them often, but the kitties have bad breath, and I am wanting to do some flea treatments, so I am rewarding them and freshening their breath. In the summer they can eat grass.

I've heard about those pill pockets, but I've never seen a cat that will not chew food if they can... all all my cats with really bad breath, have equally bad teeth to go along with it...

I guess I'm going to have to try those greenies, I hear so many good things about them, its just how do I afford that many?

i don't have cats but I know how it is to give horse meds! Some horses you can put in their grain with molasses and they will eat it. Other horses won't touch meds in grain no matter what you do! Two weeks ago one of the horse at the stable had work done on his teeth. A 32 year old Appy named Cue! His teelth were terrible! Two back teeeth had to be pulled and his teeth had not be floated in years! So after all that the vet gives the owner meds to give her horse. It was 12 pulls twice a day! The barn manager ended up giving Cue his meds dissolved in water in a syringe! He had a weeks worth of pills! Cue was not thrilled getting the meds! At least I had it easy with Major! All I had to do was the molasses thing!

wow, 32 without having his teeth floated in years - he's a lucky horse to be alive! I'm sure he isn't thrilled, but if he starts feeling better, then he will do better...

Okay, I'm going to show my ignorance here. What do you mean by 'having his teeth floated'?

Ok Let me try ot explain flaoting. Horse's teeth sometimes get edges on the teeth. When they do they need their teeth floated. Most of the time a horse will need this done once a year. The vet will usually sedate the horse so it stays standing and will let a vet open its mouth to do this. The "float" is a rectangled rasp on a rod like a foot or more long. The vet will rasp down the teeth that need floating. If it isn't done on a regualar basis,a horse can be very uncomfortable and have trouble eating and might even developed worse teeth problems. Why it is called "floating" I am not sure!

I have had your problems and lost so many cats in such a short time, and I was so heart broken.

yeah, I wasn't ready to lose another cat so quickly... even a grumpy one so I'm glad she doesn't have anything really serious...

Yeah, I could wish that I had only that one problem with that one cat. Sometimes cats are difficult to medicate and to get fluids into them if they feel bad. I've yet to find the best method to give a cat a pill. Have you seen the online advice about that? I was written by 'the dog'. Funny. Why do you think she is ill-tempered? Maybe she thinks she has too much competition for your attention? Hope she gets better.

Here's one owner's experience: http://www.nanceestar.com/CatPill.html I haven't found the one by the dog yet though.

Well, she's a "blue" and from what I've noticed about blues is that they aren't very cat friendly. And, since we have so many cats, she's always in a bad temper. Actually, I'm pretty good at shoving my finger down cats' throats after all these years, and its not like trying to catch one of the ferals, I had no problem actually medicating her tonight. She was well and truly pissed at me after tho!

On the scale of problems I suppose this one is fairly minor but I still wouldn't want it. I have had a few cats that were not the best companions but I still could not stand to see one of them suffer.

I don't want her sick or die, so I worry about her - even is she's about the least cuddly non-feral cat we've got! About floating teeth - I don't know how it got the name "floating" and I'm not 100% sure how they do it, but basically horses teeth have to be sanded down because they chew the food and kind of get sharp points and ridges on them - and the teeth move some and floating them get them back where they belong - our teeth move too, this is why you can "fix" teeth with braces...

Okay, somewhere in the back of my mind I knew about filing the teeth, now that you mention it but I've never heard the term floating. Thanks for the info.

I had to take one of my cats to the vets last week and i will say that i was upset, as they think that she has a cancer growth. She is 15 years old at least and she is a rescue cat.I was told a year ago that she had sinus problems and that was the reason for her having like a cold, also she had a heart murmer like they tend to in old age.Two weeks of pills and i will say that she is playing again, the nose is still a tad snuffly, so more pills and longer on them. All i can do is cross my fingers, thankfully she is not really suffering, only from the snuffles.I hope your cat gets better really soon.

poor thing. maybe she is like me and when she dont feel good gets really crabby. some of us are like that i do wish that was the problem i had instead of trying to deal with a drunk in the house, always sneaking out and coming back ill tempered and my daughter trying to hide it so no one will say anything. sons about to get mean with him i think and would have already if not for his sisters feelings. anyway, wish i was back to my cat days. things were a bit simpler. of course COco here is a good tempered little thing.

no, she's been crabby since she got here, actually before she got here, because she was hanging out on the roomie's folk's porch... we suspect she has an old injury to her back, but this sickness is new, not the crabbiness!
