A hobby of feeding birds who gather in a regular pattern just around your courtyard in search of feeds.... a lot of implications on it. Once a feeding option is offered to a wayward bird it is hard to shirk away fro it. It is often felt as a sin not to respond to regular and punctual visits of the avian species. Does birds bring in good portends? I am waiting in patience for good tidings.

Yes, the birds get used to feeding and don't look for alternative sources of food. In one way it is a disservice to them but where I live the winter is very hard on our birds and many of them die from the cold and not enough food. I know this is nature's way but still I try to prevent it. I feed my birds each winter with seed and suet. It is one of the few things in my life that gives me great pleasure. They are my entertainment while I sit here and work on my computer all day. But it is quite expensive this year as the seeds that benefit them the most have had the priced more than doubled. I'm told it's due to fuel prices and inflation of our currency. Still, I will feed my birds. Maybe not as much, just filling the feeder once a day instead of twice, but I won't stop feeding them. Same as my stray cats, I have to feed my animal friends. Sometimes when the feeder is empty birds will come and sit on my window sill. They know where the food comes from and that makes me feel appreciated--even though I doubt they have a feeling of gratitude!

Those birds are definitely grateful that you feed them. Just notice how they chirp happily as they partake of what you have given them. No, I no longer overfeed those birds. I used to do that and it is not good. Now that the trees that I have planted in my yard have grown really big, it appears that they are happier eating the fruits and the bugs that they can find therein. The birds of various species are now living in our yard and there is no feeding necessary. I keep some waterers for them at the garden though. And it makes me and my kids happy to see them take there baths therein. Yes, I live in a country wherein the seasons of the year are only the dry and the wet seasons. The sunny and the rainy days in other words...lucky indeed are we.

I have a much different setting. The birds throng in at fixed intervals of time...feed on what is being offered...fly away with little expressions of gratittude. Strange .Isn't it? But I love it...

Oh, I love to feed the birds that reaches our yard. Besides, it is never difficult doing so since they just simply get happy enough with whatever amount and whatever available seed you may have for them. I don't know about the habit of feeding those birds to be bringing us good luck. I am sure though that those birds will be wishing well the feeders to have some again for tomorrow to share with them.

It is all a matter of love and regard for those fellow creatures...in any case a feathered one is much better than a two legged mammal like us humans.

Sometimes "Mother Nature" can be very cruel to our feathered friends, too. Just like after a earthquake or other natural disaster, we NEED a leg up and a hand out...So do they, when the seasons are harsher that what they should be! Yes, I do indulge my feathered friends when weather challenges their life! Good food in winter...and lots of fresh water in drought ridden summers!

We all MUST care for each other....We may not see it directly, but we and the environment are dependent on the role they play, too! They are a very big piece of the ecosystem puzzle..plus, they are a treat and delight to watch and listen to!

I have fed humming birds from the end of frost until frost begins again. We have watch them raise their families and just enjoyed their overall presents for over 20 years. I don't know about good portends, we do not have that saying here. We just enjoy the birds.

Feeding birds which do not belong to you is quite a different experience...they are visitors, but their promptness is amazing.

Hiya sukumar, Other Week we had a Red Robin here probably in search of Food. I feed my Puppy and they usually come around then as I feed him a lot of Rice and other grains sometimes. Also had a Wagtail here the other Day he comes back the most though and he defies the Dog walks around in front of him and is too quick for ours when he jumps after him. I love Birds to come here but here in the Countryside they come here so much earlier in the Morning so I think I have missed a lot of them by the time I really get to notice and I do get up really early as well.xxx

I try to understand what you mean or ask. But I don't. Do you mean that if you start to feed a bird you have to keep going on with it? What means: it is hard to shirk away fro it??? I think human beings should not interfere in nature and not feed birds at all.

You are right ... once started the feeding is meant to go on and on until perhaps you get weary.

During the winter time, we will put up bird feeders that we make for the children because of the fact that there is very little natural food for the birds during the winter time. The result that I've seen from this is that there are several different breeds of birds that will be found in our backyard throughout the course of the year. I do think that my favorite is that we seem to have a single mated pair of cardinals that nest in our backyard every year.
