Control Freaks vs. Amusement Park Rides

controls in amusement park rides - loosing control in rides

I brought the kids up the mountain this past weekend so we could go tobogganing. The hill that we were on was a bit high, so I had to do the first run before the kids could do it. This was to show that it was all right, all good, not scary, and fun. But to be honest, I always have trouble doing this. Because somewhere during the slide, down the hill, I loose control. And it isn’t easy for a control-freak like me. Same goes for amusement rides. I bring the kids to amusement parks so they could enjoy it, but deep inside I struggle with it because I don’t have any controls when I’m on one of these rides. So it isn’t really an enjoyable thing for me. How about you? Can you easily let go? Can you enjoy amusement rides? Are you a control freak (who enjoy amusement rides)? Do you go tobogganing?

You are the first person I have known who understands what I feel on the rides. I will not say I am a "control freak" but I will say that being out of control is scary for me. I have never gone tobogganing, not enough snow or mountains around here. I have been to amusement parks, though.

I think part of the fun for some people in amusement park rides, is loosing that control, and just going with the flow. I have a hard time with that too. Thanks GG!

People have a different tolerance when it comes to thrill rides. Every person is different and while I CAN loose control on some rides, there are many that I am to afraid to go on to. I love roller coasters though, those I think I would be able to go on most of them. PS: It is commendable that you make that sacrifice for the kids though, I am sure it means a lot to them especially since they have a higher tolerance then you.

Thanks elitess. I'm sure they do have a higher tolerance than me. Sometimes their fear of the unknown gets to there first. That's why I have to show them and be an example before them, so that they don't miss out.

Funny I never thought I had Any control over Anything but I Still would say no to riding roller coasters! But then again I was never forced to ride them anyway! So to this day I will never ride a roller coaster or ride a sled down a hill.

I missed it!I have heard that the Wings are red Hot! My Caps are not. Every time I sit down to watch they get scored upon and soon I'm looking for something else to see! I have only seen a few games this year.

Luckily, I've never had anybody force me to ride a roller coaster that I didn't like, or any ride for that matter. The ones that I get into, has always been my choice. Usually, it's just one ride, and then I never do it again. Speaking of roller coaster rides, that game last night between the wings and the nucks was one thrill ride! Every team still wants to measure up against Detroit.

Yes I am a control freak.. but I've never had a problem with sledding or rides. This past summer my daughter brought me on the craziest ride ever! It's a roller coaster.. but your seat spins around in circles while you're racing along this winding track. Want to talk about no control.. half the time you can't even see where you're going! I was a bit dizzy afterwards, but it was fun anyway! My daughter is nuts! She just turned 9, and she'll go on anything. Actually most normal rides she considers them boring! She wants the crazy roller coasters and things that go upside down. At the fair there's this new ride called the sky flyer. It's like the swings, you know, that go around in a circle (those normal swings are boring to her), except this sky flyer goes up like 100 feet in the air or something! It was taller than our biggest ferris wheel.. and our fair's ferris wheel is really big!! She went on that like 3 or 4 times! Like I said.. she's nuts!

She's been like that for as long as I can remember. I remember her tears when she was told she wasn't tall enough for the rides she wanted to go on.. she was like 5 and wanted to go on the normal swings at a carnival.. nope.. not quite tall enough. My other kids aren't quite like her. Her twin brother is happy going on the little baby rides with his younger brothers, like the cars that go around in a little circle at less than 1 MPH. This past year for the first time he finally went on the Music Express.. which goes really fast in a circle, then goes backwards. That is the only adult type ride he'll go on.. happens to be a favorite of his and the oldest. My oldest, who's now 14... I try to get him to go with the daughter on some of these rides because I don't think they'll let her go alone, but he won't. It's like pulling teeth to get him to try a new ride. He sticks to the tilt o whirl and the music express type rides.. won't even go on the ferris wheel. BTW- last time I brought my daughter on the huge ferris wheel at our fair.. I had to hold the back of her shirt because she was leaning over the edge looking straight down and I was afraid she'd fall out!

There was something like that at the fair near hear (sky flyer) when we went just before school started. It's called atmosfear! I saw it from afar! I definitely knew I wouldn't get on it! Your daughter is just 9 and she likes rides like that?! Maybe a pilot or astronaut for her future!?

Hee hee. I never connected it to being a control freak - but maybe so! I have always loved amusement park rides - I was always fearless when it came to the "big" rides. But as I've gotten older, in the back of my mind, I do fear them somewhat now. I start thinking about derailing on a roller coaster, falling out of my seat or something malfunctioning - a ride going fatally bad. What if thoughts. So yah, I don't enjoy the rides as much now. Come to think of it, as I've gotten older, I've become MORE of a control freak - so maybe you're right - ha ha!! Wish we could go tobogganing - no where here to do it! Happy Holidays to y'all, bounce58!

Maybe we can attribute it to getting older, or getting wiser! That we tend to want to control most of the things around us. Therefore the appeal of an amusement ride fades! And then we hide it in the guise of 'what if' thoughts. Thanks and Happy New Year to you!

I think I'm a mild control freak lol. Like everyone, I love when things go my way. But I'm also able to go with the flow if things don't work out, most of the time I'm pretty easy-going. I don't really have a problem with amusement park rides. The only ones I don't like are ones that spin because I get really bad motion-sickness. I'm fine on rollercoasters going upside down and doing corkscrews, but I'm not a big fan of going straight down, that tends to get me scared lol

Funny how the rides that go straight down are the scariest! Well, at least for me anyway. I always have the visual of whatever is in my stomach going up my throat as the ride goes down. This discussion aside, I think you're currently in an emotional 'rollercoaster' rides. I hope there's no spinning involved!

Personally for me, it often depends on the situation. But with Amusement parks, I cannot handle very many of the rides anymore so maybe it is due to I feel I have no control. But I know I hate flying for Fear of crashing, etc. As for tobogganing I have not done that in yrs. I actually now live in an area that never sees much snow so it does not even give me a chance to consider it.

Our place doesn't get much snow either. We had to drive to the mountains to see some significant snow. I guess for most people, that's the reason they don't get up on amusement rides, the loss of control. Thanks.

Last time I went sledding I got whiplash. lol As for amusement park rides, I'm ok with the ones that don't make me carsick (ie spinning rides, flight simulation type rides). I did have a problem with roller coasters for a while, because of fear of heights, but then one day I went, and decided to have a good time, screamed my silly head off and loved it.

Last time I went sledding I got whiplash. lol Actually, after our day sliding and toboganning down the hill, I twisted my knee slipping on the ice, trying to run after our backpack that went tumbling down. I still walk with a limp! Thanks dawn.

I have never been tobogganing but I can relate to the "out of control" thing. I like to be in control of things that pertain to me too and those rides can really put you out. I have a hard time letting go too. Driving is another example...if I am driving I feel more comfortable than if someone else is doing it. I don't say anything unless they scare me but I would rather be the one behind the wheel. You should post some pics of your tobogganing trip.

I know what you mean about driving! I once drove with friends down to San Francisco. It was 16 or 18 hours (including all our stops). We took turns driving down, but I just had to be 'kind' enough to drive the whole way back because I just wasn't at ease with another person driving.
