wrapping paper..

December 20, 2011 3:20pm CST
For most of us, Christmas is coming up faster than we thought. I mean where on earth has December gone?? I literally only put my Christmas tree up [on the 1st if December] blinked, and it was a week to Christmas! does anyone else feel like this?? and wrapping paper!! oh my goodness!! is it just me or has the price of wrapping paper got super extreme?? I was in a shop yesterday, and the wrapping paper was £4.99 for a 4m roll.. to be thats a little extreme!! [for our american buddies, i would say thats maybe $7 or $8? roughly..] and i've already went through 20m's of paper wrapping all my presents, and there are still more to do!! and is it really just a waste of time? should we all buy fancy little gift bags instead ? and that way the can be re-used, providing we don't write on the little tag bit.. because i mean the paper gets ripped off and thrown in the bin. unless you are one of those people who unwrap a present really neat, and fold the wrapping paper and re-use it? slightly insane if you ask me, but then again it takes all sorts to make the world go round. what are your views on wrapping paper?

Well I don't know about there, but here, gift bags are insanely expensive too. Even if they are reused I don't think it's enough to count either for the environment or the pocket. I personally use leftovers. It takes a bit longer but especially if you enjoy it it saves a lot of money. I use white or beige (unbleached) simple paper and then I cover it with certain things or contrast it with the ribbon. This are my tips and tricks I sometimes used and still use (not all at the same time though, it would look too messy :)) - I cut out stars from old magazines or catalogues and stick them on. - I use xmas stamps to cheer it up. - I use interesting ribbon combinations like two colours twisted together. - I use big width ribbons and cut out holes in them with the hole puncher. Then I use the little circles remaining to ornate the gift box. - I put buttons on a string at certain distances and knot them in and then circle the whole box with the string - I hand print on white paper. This actually looks really cool There are many things that can be done cheaply. And some can be without much effort. But in the end a plain white or envelope beige paper with a big ribbon can do, since everyone cares for the inside more than anything.

ribbons are way cheaper than wrapping paper. you can buy ready made ribbons or you can buy a whole reel. around here it's about 1$/200 meters or 2-3$/200 meters on the thick ones, and then you can make your own ribbons as fancy as you want. You can use 3-4 meters/present and it's still very cheap. About the present all wrapped individually or put in a bag.. well.. there's one more way you didn't consider maybe. Wrapping them all together in a big box. Some like big boxes :) The unwrapping is fun though so, the more the merrier; it depends on what you want, what you like or what you think the receiver likes.

and i do get what you mean about gift bags being expensive etc.. BUT.. you can fit say all 5 of someones presents into the one gift bag, where as think how much wrapping paper you would need to wrap each of the presents individually!

We got our wrapping paper for like 3 dollars just enough to do a few presents still have some for next year as well as tape. I did see all of the prices and there was some that were like what for 3 rolls or less your kidding me thankfully we had a gift card so we didn't have to pY out of pocket for the paper.

it's so ridiculous.. because it literally just is paper with a picture printed onto it! we would be better buying packs of A3 paper and drawing our own pictures onto it haha!

We are small family so we got the small roll and we still have lots of left for next year. At my parents house my mom has a wrapping paper holder for Christmas. I keep Christmas bags thy saves money on paper some years.

thats a few people in this discussion have said about buying the paper AFTER christmas for next year. defo think i'll do this. bags are cheaper here.. you can get 3 big gift bags for like £3.. but you can fit all of someones presents in it rather than wrapping individually!

I agree December has flown by! I felt like November took a long time and this month has flew by! Crazy. Wrapping paper here can be expensive but I get mine from the dollar store so it costs me one dollar per roll which is much cheaper than other stores! Absolutely love dollar stores.=) Lol. I hope you have a Merry Christmas!

see we have pound stores, which are the same as your dollar stores, and i love them too! you can get shampoo, shower gel, bubble bath, toys, even make up etc for £1 .. its fantastic. however, as i said above, i found that with the cheaper pound store wrapping paper, the paper quality wasn't very good, and it was very thin, flimsy paper, that ripped very easily. and i know the whole point is for the paper to be ripped, but when transporting the present from one house to another, it being easily ripped is a bad thing lol!

This might sound funny, have you ever tried using paper bags. Really they can be used in a couple of ways. One way is to simply put a smaller gift in a decorative bag. The other is simply break down the paper bags you get from the grocery store. You can make them look nice if you put some effort. Good luck!

see i like this idea.. take a paper bag and then decorate it? .. the only thing is, it wouldn't get rid of paper bags that i get from a store. i'd actually have to purchase paper bags, because our grocery stores hand on plastic carrier bags.

i personally love wrapping paper because it makes the time the family shares during unwrapping presents longer. It is also very fun ripping apart the paper. It is indeed more expensive than ever but there are many bargain stores such as Dollar Tree and Target that have deals on wrapping paper. I also recommend you buying wrapping paper the day after christmas for that is when it is the cheapest! :)

a few people in this discussion have said to me about buying wrapping paper after christmas when it's on sale.. and thats what i'm going to do this year. we have pound stores, which are the same as your dollar stores, but i find the paper is very flimsy and easily ripped. which is good when opening the presnt, but bad when transporting it. i think it lacks quality when buying from a cheaper store, although with the stuff being so cheap, i could wrap them twice lol!

I only buy the cheap wrapping paper so I can use lots, we can pick up wrapping paper very cheap here in Australia and the smart people buy next years paper after Christmas this year as they are put out mega cheap, I had a few rolls from last Christmas...I have only known one person who carefully unwraps the paper, I don't know how people can do that, with me its rip rip ripity rip....

well we luckily have shops that do sell cheaper wrapping paper, for example in the "pound shop" we were able to get 4 rolls of paper for £2.. which is fantastic considering the fact that there in my discussion i said about a wrapping paper that was £5 for one roll!! lol! thats actually quite a good idea though, to keep wrapping paper over for next year.. i just don't know where on earth I would be able to store it that it wouldn't get wrecked, and that I would remember about it the next year lol! I KNOW! how insane is that? unwrapping so slowly and careful? i practically have my teeth round the stuff lol!

I have about 4 years worth of paper stocked up in my guest room closet. I have birthday paper, christmas paper, generic solid colors. When I see it on clearance (less than a dollar a roll) I will buy a roll or two. Last Christmas, I had a coupon on top of the clearance and got the big rolls for 75cents each. Gift bags are just easier, especially with odd shaped gifts.

lol odd shaped gifts!! .. tell me about it. i bought my partners mum 2 tubs of this really gorgeous orange souffle body lotion. have you ever tried to wrap a circle? it's awful lol!!

Hello. I think it depends what you like or what other people like to receive. Present wrapped in paper or just cute bag. I order present for my partner or Amazon and I have requested that the gift should be wrapped. One problem solved. Seriously I have no idea why wrapping paper is so expensive. Greetings.
