There are no new quality batsmen in the world...

They say test cricket is the real test and only the best can play well in tests. Over the last few months this has been amply demonstrated by the inept displays from supposedly star players from all countries. The ones who have done well have been doing so consistently for years be it Sachin, Dravid Laxman and Ponting, Kallis. The current generation has thrown up a few good players but none to match the greats of the previous generation or yester years. On a wicket which is assisting the bowlers one has to go looking for Ponting and Hussey to save Australia and vvs, dravid ,tendulakar and sehwag to rescue India. Where are the Kohlis and the Gambhirs??? The batting standards have dropped drastically, please share your views.

Dravid does have a record to envy. But I couldnt say the same for VVS or even Tendulkar. Sehwag we all know plays at mercurial levels. Kohlis and Gambhirs failed. Bad form happens.

Hey..do we always have to win? Have Australians never lost? So have the seniors hung on to give them that victory.. the two are separate issues.

The veterans are playing because there is no new comer stepping up to stake his claim. Most newcomers are happy to play the slam bang version called T-20 and even ODI for them seems like the longest version of the game. If new batsmen are not coming up it is an indicator that test cricket is declining. The way Gambhir and Kohli perished today indicates that there is no time to fight and try to retrieve the situation. It does not make for interesting viewing when you watch old veterans trying to stay there where as the youngsters are streaming in and out with quick regularity. how can you expect the older guys to take you to a win when they are actually on an extended run because there is no new talent available. Look at any side and you will find there are are hardly any exciting talent less than 24 years of age. Ganguly, Sachin came in early and by age 25 they were established players. Here you have guys already in their mid twenties and yet to find their feet. Where are the 21 year old batsmen ready to take charge? Do you see any???

Yes, we play to win, always. Otherwise it is called match fixing but that is another story.I think what you are saying is we can't always win, that is alright I have no problems with losing. Losing and winning are the two possibilities.

I am not completely agree with you, there are batsman that will be called great in the future, because to be called great it need time and experience, Sachin, Dravid etc havn't become great in a flash, it is their hard work and consistency that make them great. There is no lack of quality batsman, it seems only because the game has changed and so as the batting style. So we will have to wait and watch how the batsman perform in the near future and one more thing anyone can't be great only some of them will be.

Where are the newcomers who have taken the world by storm. Cullins and to a lesser extent Umesh Yadav, have you noticed any batsman who has burst upon the scene with a great performance.

Mastering the art of Batsmanship is not very easy. One has to have the right talent and skills, great attitude, years of toiling but most importantly right temperament in match situation esp under pressure. Sachin, Dravid, Kallis and Ponting have been at it for years and know their game very well and prepare well in all aspects, hence are much more successful compared to Slam Bang Version Stars. But one must also be patient with newcomers in Test Cricket, as they are yet figuring their game, coming to terms with rigors of Test Cricket and most times refining their game while fighting for their place in side. To battle such odds in different situations, conditions and trying times, is never easy and needs lot of grit and character. I feel there is lot of potential in some of our rising stars like Kohli, Rohit and Raina and can do well in Test Cricket in coming years. Cheers!

The best batsman of the side should be a 24 year old but do you see any 24 year old who is dominating the world batting? If 38 year old veterans are the leading batsmen of the world closely followed by 30 someting batsmen you know something is wrong. And where are the genune all rounders?

You may be right to a certain extent...there are good batters, what i feel is many of them play cricket just for the sake of making money and cricket gives them a lot of money...new generation of cricketers are more money oriented is what i feel, though they are good bunch, but have not performed to their potential in trying situations and then you have to depend upon the old warhorses....

Yes the players who have been consistent for the past few years is only Sachin, Dravid and Kallis etc. In test matches Kohli is not good. But, in ODIs he is very useful. We have seen it many times before. There are so many innings which has saved India from defeat. I could say that Kohli is going to be the future of Indian cricket .

Kohli is not convincing at the test level. I think Rohit is better but he has got a lot of chances which he has wasted in the past. Pujara is injured, I believe. Rehane should be given a chance if Gambhir fails again.
