I always ride a jeepney on the way to work. This morning I seated at the back row near the exit door of the jeepney because that is the only vacant seat. The people near the driver usually are the ones getting the fare from the passenger and give it to the driver. It wasn't necessarilly their obligation but it is a sign of goodwill. However, the two people nearest to the driver pretended to be asleep when I was giving my fare so I have to hyper-extend my arms just to reach the driver's outstretched hand. Although it's not their fault that they are seated on the wrong place at the wrong time, they shouldn't pretend to be asleep just to avoid getting the fare of other passengers. Have you experienced that? Or do you sometimes do it too? I never pretend to fall asleep but sometimes if there are a lot of passenger, I pretended not to hear them. LOL!

I definitely know what you mean!!! There are times when the ONLY seat available is the one nearest to the driver area so since I really want to get home, I sit there. As soon as I reach into my bag to get my purse, people started saying "Mama, bayad" (Here's my fare) or "Mama, bayad. Paabot nga po" (Here's my fare. Kindly pass it to the driver) there's even someone who told me "Paabot naman ng bayad namin. Kanina pa kami nagabot eh!" (Pass my fare! I've been extending my arms far too long!) I got irritated that I blurted out "Kakaupo ko pa lang di ba e di sana kanina pa kayo nag-abot. Kayo lang ba may karapatang magbayad? Kumukuha pa nga lang ng pambayad e. Pwede maghintay?" (I just sat down why didn't you gave your fare to the driver earlier? I'm still getting my fare! Are you the only ones who have the right to pay their fare? I'm still getting my fare from my wallet! Can't you wait?) and they all fell silent and waited for me to pay. It's rude I know but at least I put that woman in her right place! It's alright to have somebody pass your payment but it's rude to DEMAND it. I really can't believe that there are commuters who treat themselves as someone higher than you. No wonder there are people who ignores the likes of them.

And the jeepney's just parked there waiting to be filled. It's really a sight to see that no one's really sitting near the driver side. @tatzkie23: I know! That's why Pinoy commute stories amuses me a lot :P Only in the Philippines! @stuckonu: Lol! Careful! If you do that people will round up your office and have a "peaceful" rally Lol! If you'll run for congressman, what'll be your platform be? "I promise that no Filipinos will ever agian be pissed off by passing fares to the driver! So vote for me!"

This post also made me laugh. Don't worry keihimekawa, if I become a congressman (which I doubt), I will pass a bill banning people from demanding their fares to be taken by other passengers. :) But that's really rude of them to wait for someone to get their fares. They have their own hands why wouldn't they pay in the first place?

I avoid as much as possible in seating near the back of the driver, because of that. I hate it when i would be like their "conductor" who gets the fares. So, in the morning i would immediately give my fare to the driver as i seat down, and go to the nearest place by the door. That way, i wouldn't have to give their fares to the driver.

But it seems, that because the passengers are keen in handing down their fares to the driver, they chose to get rid of the conductors. Oh i hate it, when all seem to hand down their fares to me to give it to the driver.

Yeah that's what I usually do too. But sometimes other passengers who just rode will take the place nearest the exit door so in essence you will be obliged to be their conductor. That's why I really want to ride jeepneys with their own conductors at the back (yung nakasabit). LOL! They are very keen in getting the fares and sometimes doesn't need other passengers to get the fares of the others. :)

I always experience being the good samaritan! That's because I always sit near the driver unless there is no seats available near him. I don't mind getting the fare and giving it to the driver but sometimes there are just those passengers who would intentionally sit away from the driver and just give their fare to the people near the driver. Well, there is nothing wrong with it if there are no seats available near the driver but it is annoying when there is no other passengers but you and that pasaway passenger. Sometimes, that passenger would even sit behind you just not to give his/her fare directly to the driver. Sometimes, if there is no passenger except for me and a passenger would sit in the other row far from the driver, I will pretend not to see that passenger so he/she would make his own effort to give his/her far to the driver.

Haha. Yeah there are those "Juan Tamads" (Lazy Johns) who even though there are only a handful of passengers will still expect the other passengers to get their fare. I never do that. If there are only one or two passengers near the driver, I will give my fare myself.

That's why everybody's trying to stay away from driver nowadays! You are not really obliged to do so, but then you do feel obliged because if it happened to you, you would appreciate someone handing the fare to the driver for you. During my student days, everybody even did it to the point of giving the change to everyone so that the money handed to the driver is already the amount of everyone's fare. So the driver wouldn't have to think of anything anymore.

it also happened to me when i will seat in back part of the vehicle, sometimes they never get my fare to pass it to the driver and that is very annoying, because when i am near in the driver i give it a hand for their fare to give it to the driver.

In my first years in Manila i used to be happy taking and passing all the fare to the driver, but after years i got sick of doing it.So what i did was always get a dark sunglass with me so they don't see if i am sleeping or not.Tendency is they pass the money to others than me. :-D

Good tip. I'll try that sometimes. Plus an earphone and a facemask, the other passengers might think that you mean business in not getting their fares. LOL. I'll just be careful not to be confused as a hold-upper. :)

I don't mind handling the fares from both sides it just sometimes becomes annoying when the person next to you could do the same thing, but rather ignore the situation! There are times as well that some passengers won't even say please to pass on the money and just handed it to you that you are konduktor (a person that collects fares) sorry don't know how they call the person in English!

well, pretending it is generally done by Filipinos. not only on those acts but on other else too. and in connection with your main topic discussion, i very seldom ride in a jeep but when it happens to me, like if i am sitting near the driver, i am extending my hand to assist in giving someones fare. and neither, i am not pretending that i am asleep. as for me, i believe in the saying, do not do unto others, what you do not want to do unto you. so, i am very particular with my act, as i don't want that to be done on me. and if somebody does it either intentionally or not, i am just lifting that thing into prayer. God never sleeps, as He is aware in every move that we are doing.

I have some experiences when there are people even awake who just don't care to get my money and pass on to the driver. They just don't like taking the fare even if I repeatedly asking them to. I hate those kinds of people who don't care enough for other people. It is expected that if you ride a jeepney, you are ought to take the fare to reach it to the driver. My bf got pissed of on a girl with another girl who just get the fare and leave it on the bench. My bf took the money from the bench and hand it straight to the driver. Those type of people are rude, more than Stinky passenger, I should say.

yeah, I've had an experience same as that, and I agree to that, Well thats ok if they are really near to the driver where they can get the fare and give it to the driver, There are other commuters tend to sit near the exit, but they are not so sensitive especially when the jeepney is not that loaded with passengers..they will give you their fare and expecting that you will do the extra effort for them getting near to the driver and its so annoying! well anyway hope before taking a ride at the jeepney make it a point that you get seated at the right place of the jeep :-)

If I'm seated behind the driver and there are lots of passengers passing their fare to the driver through me, I sometimes feel annoyed because I couldn't enjoy the ride But I never have to pretend to sleep. When riding in a jeep, I always prefer sitting near the exit as long as it's vacant. Good day!

Me too always rides a jeepney from going to school and going home. It is my means of transportation. I have dealt with many kind of passengers and some dramas inside the jeepney. As for me, I don't pretend being asleep as I would like to help reaching the fare to the driver. Maybe that is just me. It is okay as long as I am not abused.

i don't mind at all receiving passenger's seat sometimes i am seated near the driver but i don't have to get other people's fare to hand it to the driver..sometimes the other person seated in the middle would take it and hand it to other side seated near the front..maybe i could pretend not to hear but i would never pretend to sleep..

Frankly speaking, I don't like to be the one in charge of receiving the fare from people who like to seat at the rear end of the jeep. If and whenever, I have to sit in the rear end, I always find a way to be the one who personally hands my fare to the driver. Standing up is not much effort isn't it. However, if it is necessary to seek the assistance of the other passengers to hand over my fare, then I always say please and thank you. Some think that if you are sitting near the driver it becomes your obligation to receive their fare. Most of the time, I really choose to sit in front beside the driver so as not to be bothered with the fares.

i think all of the people who always ride on a jeepney experienced that if they dont like to do that better not seat on that particular place lol but of course they must keep in mind that they will experienced what the've done too lol
