Did you realize that the Bald Eagle has been the symbol of our United states since 1782? Huge bird and very impressive. Did our founding fathers make a good decision? It could have been the wild turkey. Your thoughts. Lots of other interesting facts I learned about in this article; http://www.examiner.com/nature-in-milwaukee/milwaukee-bald-eagles-fun-facts?cid=PROG-Examiner-Article-StrangeFactsList6-BaldEagle

that's funny, i can't see how we as citizens could sit back and accept a wild turkey as as our symbol. i'm going to say when it came right down to it the choice between the 2 was a no brainer.

But then you didn't live in the 1700's when wild turkeys were as common in woods near a home as black birds or gulls are here. And they are interesting animals.

I don't know why your founding fathers took the Bald eagle as your symbol of nation. Why wasn't it tiger or lion? Thank you for sharing the link with us,let me know the bald doesn't mean being bare but white.

From a distance the head looks bald because of its color. When our founding fathers picks the eagle they were chosing from animals in this country. We don't have lions or tigers here. They may not have even known they existed at that time.

Yes, I know that it is symbol of USA. In fact I don't really know why USA chose this animal as their symbol. Perhaps the bald eagle can fly high and have a super eyesight. It is the leader of the birds. It has a strong spirit. And it is also a bird comes from USA. I love China

It does have alot of strong attributes. The forefathers were thinking of a animal that was in our country. In our area. I think they made a very good choice. I love these birds. And the perigin falcon.

I think they made a pretty good choice. It is a beautiful bird. I once heard that a turkey was in the running for the symbol. I also heard that the turkey was in the running for our state bird here.

Ben Franklin thought the wild turkey would be a good choice. I thought the turkey was the state bird for your state. Hmmm.

The Bald Eagle is a metaphor of personal transformation, often being favorably contrasted with the way of a chicken. It symbolizes greatness of vision, being a bird with telescopic eyes, and freedom as well as dominion. I think it is an apt symbol of the United States. Nice examiner article.
