Most of the people just eat the sweet potato. But perhaps they ignore that actually the leaves of the sweet potato are also delicious and healthy. In the past they were supposed to feed the pigs. But today many people realize the advantages of these leaves and therefore they become to a common vegetable in the market now.

Set the root or top in some water to let it root well. Then plant it. Yes, you can plant it in a pot.

yes, it's called " kamote" tops in the Philippines, actually the younger leaves are preferred, we just boil hot water, put the washed leaves in it and put out the flame. It's drained of the water and that's it, you can eat it as is, with rock salt, with fish paste or fish sauce depending on what you like. Yes it's very healthy. We also sometimes use the leaves on some fish soup dishes

We have a different cooking way. Usually we put a little oil into the pot. Then put some garlic inside. After that, fry it with the sweet potato leaves and we love it.

I know what you mean cause I also have Chinese ancestry and we also use a wok, but we do that more on water spinach (kang kong)and if it is done with garlic, oil, light soy sauce and water then it becomes a vegetable adobo for us, perhaps I would try frying or I think the proper term is a sauteeing sweet potato tops with garlic, thanks for your suggestion, I would surly try it cause I grow sweet potato in my garden

Yes I do eat them in different ways, blanched, raw, steamed, sauteed in oyster sauce and even in soups. I think many people are scared of it cos potato leaves is poisonous but we know sweet potato is different from potato. they were 2 different species, Its one of the most nutricious vegetables around, plus they were very easy to grow,

Sorry, I didn't realise the question was ambiguous. I didn't mean the kind of "history" you study at school and read in books. I meant what has happened to the actual leaves you're buying before you see them in the market.

Wow, thank you, that's news to me. We certainly wouldn't dream of eating the leaves of ordinary potato plants!

Thanks for the suggestion, but no thanks. If you compare the entries for potato and sweet potato in Wikipedia, you will see why not (The leaves of the one are toxic and of the other are "sometimes eaten as greens"). But anyway, thanks.

I have never eaten the leaves of the sweet potato but I've heard about it. I don't often eat sweet potatoes but I might grow some this year just to try the leaves. I'm learning about all sorts of food that we throw away just like this.

Hi youless, it's true that before sweet potato leave in my place was just for feeding pig. That time only people like us, living in the outskirt of the town or farm like to take sweet potato leaves as our dish. We just pick the young leaves and abandon the dark green old leaves as they were tough to bite. People nowadays only realize that baby sweet potato leaves are delicious as well as rich in minerals and vitamins. Lol...unexpectedly dishes prepared from sweet potato leaves even are available in the restaurant menu here The most popular one here is spicy shrimp paste stir fried baby sweet potato leaves. I guarantee you would take more plan boiled rice if to eat with this yummy dish Yeah, before these leaves are very cheap. After knowing that these leaves are nutritious and delicious, and of course due to the great demand in the market,it's increase in price inevitably. Lol... this doesn't infect us anyway, for we grow many sweet potato in our courtyard. On account of this we have fresh sweet potato leaves served in our dinner table often Have a nice day and happy posting!

Thanks youless, I didn't know the leaves were edible. What do they taste like? Can I eat them raw, like in a salad? Or do they have to be cooked? I would prefer to eat them raw, I love raw fruits and veggies..:)

I like sweet potato leaves I like them with fish soup and I like them steamed with a bit drizzle of soy sauce and lime juice! I have tried sweet potato leaves in salads, but I don't know how to make them, though I'm sure they put a bit of vinegar in it. I remember I asked my friends Mum of how she made the salads, but I can't remember, but it was lovely with fish! I just recently planted sweet potato in our backyard and am looking forward to get some leaves very soon! They are very easy to grow and very tasty too, at least to me, LOL! I used to eat them a lot when I was kid because my Mum will tell us that its high in vitamin A.

Youless, my grandmother loves to eat the leaves of this sweet potato. As for me and family, we loves to eat only the sweet potato fruits. We always boils green beans with sweet potato, to make a delicious sweet potato soup. It is said to be able to cool down the body and for easy bowel movements, when we consume them. I always make sure that my family consume this sweet potato soup, twice a week. So far, i still don't have the interest to eat any sweet potato leaves although my grandmother said it is delicious. Besides that, it is quite hard to be found in my area here. So, we usually only consume other types of veggies.

When food is getting scarce, we need to be a nation that doesn't waste food and can be versatile, I believe in any edible leaves there are a lot of goodness, and vitamins in them which are healthy for our digestive systems and can provide extra valuable nourishment. A lot of cultures use leaves as decor for cuisine, people think they are just for show but don't realize they can be eaten! I love eating certain leaves in a salad they also fill you up and have little to no calorie content in them.

I didn't know these were the leaves to feed the pigs. Yes, we eat a lot of sweet potato leaves and I also plant them in my garden, as they are very easy to grow and nice to eat as well. Moreover, it's easy to cook, we just stir fry the leaves and add some soy sauce, that's it. Sometimes, I am even lazy to add garlic slices. I read that this is very nutritious as well.
