Surprise to me

I was surprised this Christmas listening to a radio broadcaster talk about a Christmas poll. People were asked what they least liked about Christmas and the top answer was they don't like to be cheerful. I was surprised by this. Though I guess it is annoying to feel you have to be cheerful if you aren't. I thought it was a little sad. What say you? Are you surprised by such an answer?

Yes, I am very surprised. Who were these people that were polled? This sounds like some bothered people. It is sad. Sounds like a lot of depressed people took that poll.

I have to confess I have felt just this way a time or two also, but usually sometime around february or march when it's been cold for too long!

People that are not cheerful at Christmas, are people that have no compassion for others ! They are so wrapped up in themselves, they think the whole world looks miserable, but in reality, they are the only ones that are 'thinking' miserable!
Somehow the true meaning of Christmas has 'left the building for them' !
I myself, and others that are cheerful at Christmas, look forward every year, for the opportunity to give, comfort and cheer to others, no matter what the cost or sacrifice !

Yes.. I usually spend a little more than I planned wanting to give the perfect gifts.. I do enjoy it and every year after Christmas I think.. oh there it goes, gone away for another year.. The spirit of Christmas to me is the real Spirit that should always be!

Hi Flower,
Yes, I actually am surprised. I know people who just really don't like that time of year and hate the pressure of people expecting them to be cheerful. Still, I'm surprised that there were many that felt that way. I love the holidays and the spirit that they same to bring out in so many. Maybe I'm just noticing the cheerful ones but I would have thought they were the majority.

Not really, when you consider what is expected of you at Christmas time. You're expected to go to crowded stores and fight with other shoppers in order to get gifts that will probably be returned the day after Christmas. The commercialization of Christmas has pretty much ruined it, but I have found a way around it. The adults want nothing so I give them what they want, and the children want everything and appreciate nothing, so I give them what they appreciate.

I am about your age too. I love to cook and have my son bring friends home that would not have a homecooked meal for Christmas.
The least thing I like is the presents. I know sounds wierd, but there is really nothing I need or want.
I am an avid crafter and have gotten everything I need to be able to do my crafting. Right down to an Ott Lamp LOL
So hubby and I started a tradition that we would not give gifts to each other. Instead we took a cruise in December. A 7 day out of the house and away from everything seemed very luxurious to me.
We will be doing a cruise next May to Alaska.
So that will be our Christmas gift to each other again.
I can tell you first hand that the poll and cheer fall right in line.
I used to be a theater manager, and holy crap we were open Christmas night and people were wall to wall. Guess they unwrapped gifts, ate, then come to fall in a seat at the theater LOL
But Christmas was always the rudest, lack of respect, not cheerful, group of people I had ever seen.
When we got all the patrons in their shows, I remember coming out and looking at my staff of kids and saying was it my imagination or were these people unhappy for not getting what they wanted for Christmas and taking it out on us?
Naturally my staff was younger adult kids and they always got a kick out of me and what would come out of it next.
I don't decorate much anymore. I do the mantal and thats about it.
Kids are grown and gone so hubby could care less so I save money by not having to decorate so much.
I would probably change my mind if my grandchildren were around but they are sadly in Ft. Riley Kansas.

I am surprised, because although I have known a few people who do not like to be cheerful, it is pretty much accepted that cheerfulness promotes good health, and I cannot understand why someone would want to be self-defeating. Maybe what they mean is that they don't like feeling pressured to participate in activities where they have to pretend to like people they don't like. Who knows? I personally love Christmas. But I do go out of town and enjoy it away from the maddening crowds.

I'm not surprised. Christmas has been changed from a time of joy and celebration to an intense, stress-filled shopping event. It's no wonder that people don't like to be cheerful--instead of celebrating the birth of our savior they have let themselves be forced to spend more money than they can spare and go into debt that sometimes is not even paid off before the next Christmas rolls around.
It's more than a little sad, it's tragic.

I agree. I try to keep it simple and stress free.. but of course I still mange to spend at least a little more than I intended. But I do avoid most of the stress. I shop online a lot, mostly through amazon which is very easy and costs less so with shipping comes out about the same. If I go to stores, I try to go when I don't think many nothers will be doing their shopping. But yes, it has become a gluttony of consumerism!

Hello, flowerchilde. It is somewhat surprising to me to see this, but in all reality it shoulden't be. The reason is that people are now a days just plain grumpy. Why? Because of finances. That puts a burden on your fun, and alot of even christians like to have "fun". It is hard to be happy when you have a stack of bills piling up and your children want that video game, or pogo stick, for christmas. Ha, Ha. Yup, it is a sad, sad, sad, sad, sad, world. Have a great day. (SMILE, ITS CONTAGIOUS) :)
