Then and NOW...Teen love and appropriate gifting

This discussion is prompted by a memory. I was 16.. almost 17. It was my birthday and my boyfriend didn’t make much money but he wanted to buy me something I would like. He bought me a pair of stockings. You know the kind of the 60s that came to the thigh and had the black seam going down the back of them. I loved the gift, but my dad was furious. He said that gift was too personal for a boyfriend to give a girlfriend. Granted, it might have been appropriate to give me Evening in Paris perfume… I had some of that already anyway…so I was thinking about what is and is not appropriate for a boyfriend and girlfriend to give each other… and what do you think? Probably nowadays, parents wouldn’t even know much of what goes on between a boyfriend and girlfriend because the times have changed so much. Nowadays parents pretty much leave the social life of their 16 and 17 year olds to them and stay out of it. They might even give them contraceptives and just let them go… that being said… Do you feel there are gifts that are not appropriate for teen boyfriends and girlfriends to give each other? If so, please share any experiences you had and how it differs from today’s times. Feel free to talk about your own kids, if you like. Thanks in advance!

The first thing my first real boyfriend got me, was a sweetheart ring. My mom didn't really say anything about it since it was just a sweetheart ring. He then bought me an electric blanket for Christmas. Nothing was said about that either. I do think there are some gifts that are inappropriate to gift teens though. Sexy lingerie is a good example of something that is not appropriate.

That is not appropriate for then or now. Kids of today, think it is fine to gift one another things like that. Kids want adult things way too fast these days. They do not take the time to be kids.

I agree Steph. There are kids that want to grow up to fast.
