Having a cold or other illness when abroad

I traveled to Western Australia in the year 2000. It was winter at that time of the year. I had a cold which ended with a very bad ear infection. I went to a doctor and he advised me not to fly on a plane. I phoned the airline and postponed my flight on to Singapore. I found out they were way too booked up due to people flying home from the Olympics in Sydney. I asked for the next available day to fly and it was three weeks away. It gave me lots more time in Western Australia. I traveled north from Perth up to Coral Bay and back again when the time eventually came to fly out of Perth. I can't help wondering if I will ever go back to Australia. The airfares to that far away are ever so expensive. My favorite possible round the world airfare costs one thousand eight hundred and sixty one pounds. It has the route London-Bangkok overland Bali-Sydney-Auckland-Santiago overland Lima-San Jose in Costa Rica-London. The child cost would be seventy five percent of the adult fare. Have you ever had a cold or a cough whilst overseas? Did you have any accident abroad? If so how did your trip turn out? Have you ever on a trip been bitten by an insect?

It was a shame about your ear infection in the then Yugoslavia. I wonder which part of that country you went to? I loved my trip in 2003 to Croatia, Montenegro and Slovenia. I saw Dubrovnik and Lake Bled. I am glad that you were still able to fly. Back in 1991 I was advised not to fly due to my dodgy ears. Though I carried on flying because traveling is my top hobby. Just before my trip to Kenya in 1997 I was given a pair of ear planes. These stopped all my ear pain when flying but they don't work if I have an ear infection.

It's now called Croatia. The first week we were on an island called Rab, the second week we were on the mainland, called Zadar. The latter was like Preston with sun! If I could go back I would go to Lake Bled, no doubt about that..and Dubrovnik of course, which looks a beautiful place.

When my husband and I travelled around in Europe in 2010 I was ill for two weeks. I had the flu and it started the day before we had to leave. We talked about postponing our trip, but we had already made seat reservations and hotel reservations for the first nights and we wouldn't able to get our money back if we changed the reservations, so we decided to leave anyway. We travelled by train and it took us 3 days to get from Denmark to Greece. I didn't not enjoy the trip at all, because I had a fever and I was feeling really bad. When we arrived in Greece we went to our hotel and the next 3 days I spent in the hotel room. I slept for hours and my husband had to go sightseeing on his own. The last day we decided to pay a taxidriver to drive around and visit some of the famous places. Normally we would have walked around instead, but I was still very tired, so a taxi was the only option. After Greece we went to Bulgaria. I was still ill, but I was able to do a little sightseeing. We only visited one place a day and afterwards I had to rest in the hotelroom, but fortuneately I got the chance to see a bit of Bulgaria despite my illness. When we got to Romania and I was feeling better and I enjoyed the rest of the trip.

It was such a shame that you got the flu and felt ill for most of your trip around Europe. You traveled by train for long distances. I am pleased that you had a three day rest in the hotel room in Greece. It was lovely that you felt better by the end of your tip to see and enjoy seeing some of Bulgaria. You did really well to do that trip even though you were ill. I like your response but it was a pity you were so ill.

hi maximax8! oh you are so blessed in making so many trips in other countries. how i wish i could have the time and money in having so many trips like that and be able to experience other people's cultures. oh well, to answer your question i did had a fever when i traveled in London a few years back. however, the fever went away with just simple medication which i brought from home. no big deal actually since i had the fever for only a day and didn't really brought me down since i still went out and enjoy the experience. have a nice day dear friend! lovelots, faith210

Fortunately, I haven't had any accidents or illness when I traveled abroad. However, I had this trip locally to a beautiful place and stayed at a luxurious resort that became a disaster. I was so excited about that trip months ago. But when it was the day of our departure and arrived at the airport, I suddenly start coughing and sneezing. The next thing I knew I was down with a flu. I slept the 3 days away at our villa. I just get out of the bed to go to the restaurant and eat. I wasn't able to do anything else. And the resort has a lot to offer to keep any guest's boredom away. Too bad... Have you seen the website of my favorite low cost carrier, Air Asia? Try it. And you might see yourself in Australia in no time...You can fly from Gathwick via Kuala Lumpur and go to Perth, Melbourne or Sydney. Their fares are relatively cheap. Watch out for their long haul promo. That will really make your day. And while you are at it, check out their flights to the rest of Southeast Asia.
