The captain goes down with the ship or does he?

Have you heard in the news where that captain of the steamliner that capsized left the ship and the people on board to fend for themselves? I can't believe it! He knew the ship was in trouble due to electrical problems and he actually left the ship before the alarm went out to the passagers. There are 11 dead and 24 injured. the captain actually argued with the coastguard when they were ordering him back to the ship. He refused saying it was dark and you couldn't get on the ship now. What a pathetic human being. I doubt he will be captaining any more ships. He'll be lucky if he doesn't do alot of time for this. I used to want to go on a liner like this someday. Not so much any more. I am afraid of the water. What are your thoughts?

Hi Celtic, My boss told me that he was going to be charged for leaving the ship as he should be. As a Captain, it was his duty to see to that he helped and guided as many people off that ship as possible. He was not expected to go down with it but he should have been the very last one that could safely get off. He should have stayed and helped everyone he possibly could have first. He deserves whatever he gets.

Well, if everything happened according to all I've heard then he in for a bit of trouble and I'm sure will be out a job and career. One thing I will say is that we can get all the training in the world and know all there is as to HOW we should handle an emergency but we never know for sure how we will actually react until we are actually faced with such a situation. I'm thinking that he went into a complete panic mode when this happened. If that is the case then I would hope that he would agree that he should not be in such a position. Time will tell just what was in his head, I'm sure.

'going down with the ship' is just a saying. This captain was ordered by the coast guard to go back and he refused. He had left the ship before the passagers were even made aware of the situation. What a coward!! He sure does deserve whatever he gets.

yes people in charge of anything with responsibilities should be there to take charge in times of crisis, I think this man has ruined his life by what he has done, he has shown himself to be a not to be trusted coward and he has to live with that.

I agree. And i am sure he has had training in what to do in these cases too. Yet, he just leaves the ship. What a dip! Those people left on the ship needed some kind of leadership. He really let them down.

The power cut was caused by him taking the ship off-coarse and grounding, he even ordered the chef to cook him a meal while the ship was floundering. The only good thing he did was to push the ship further toward land to keep the majority of passengers safe. They should through the book at him.

Well evidently it does seem like that he did not think much about the people who was supposed to be on his ship. Obviously when you are in that kind of work, the safety of the people on the ship are going to be first and foremost beyond everything else. Beyond your own personal safety. There are really no two ways about it, this man saved his own skin and there is really nothing about that. Makes you wonder if there would be other people like this captaining ships. It does take a certain strength of character that this individual does not have. I really should hope that he is never allowed on a ship. It really is going to cause his profession to have a black mark by comparison and I can imagine other people in this industry are not happy with the business that he may have cost them.

It does make a person think about alot of different things. I used to want to go on a cruise but I am not so sure anymore.

The cowardice of this man is astounding! there are many people that do not have the ethics of yore! First he broke the law by bringing the ship too close to shore,to show of,then when the catastrophe happened,he ran like a rabbit, and argued with the coast guard, refusing to go back on the ship to give any info to the rescuers about what was going on and what was needed on board! I went on a cruise in the Caribbean and I loved it.I do not think that this would stop me to go again!

It is astounding. They are saying they usually go close to the shore but that he changed the course and got too close. He is a coward. And now they are saying there was a woman having dinner with him that should know more about the situation.

More and more details are surfacing, and all of them confirm that this man had no business being the captain of any ship!! these companies should screen their employees better!

I've seen that news this evening where they said the Captain denied that it but when the voice recording was heard I think so he can't say anything about it anymore. He was ordered back but didn't. He just proved to be really coward and doesn't deserved to be in such position. There's suppose to be a map for any ship to sail safely - but I think he was careless and lazy enough to follow the route.

When the Titanic went down the captain refused to desert the ship and preferred to go down with it.It is an unwritten code and understanding amongst ship captains throughout ages never to desert a sinking ship. They consider it to be an honour to die rather than abandon it.The welfare of the passengers and the crew comes first and the captain`s personal safety last.So what the captain of the Italian liner did was wrong and probably a rare occurence in the annals of ship diaasters. He gave a very lame excuse of darkness in the ship and ran away.He will certainly have to pay for his cowardly action.

I think this is exactly what we all think of and why his behavior is so surprising to us. He had no thought for anything but himself. What a selfish individual. I can't even believe what it is obvious he did. Didn't care to stay and help get his passagers get off. Only cared for himself.

Hi celticeagle, I completely agree with you. I have never been on a cruise, and now it is a no no. I think it is very pathetic what that Captain did. I also heard that his lawyer is arguing the fact that he could serve the evacuation better from the position he was off the ship. I don't see it, I think that is just an excuse to save himself from being charged with abandonment.

It has certainly given me second thoughts about cruises. There are a group of women at work that go on cruises together every year and when I see their picture I have thought I might want to try it. I don't know now...lol. I saw where they had arrested that captain too. I wonder what they charged him for? I can't believe that after he plowed that ship into the coastline like that that he wouldn't even have the heart to want to help any of those people!

I've always had apprehensions about these cruises. I think my fears stem back to watching Pinnochio as a kid and then of course the Titanic and Psysydoin Adventure(spelling), Jaws....amongst others. I have gone deep sea fishing and I'm fine for a couple of hours but beyond that...

I heard the news about the cruise ship and the Captain. I was glad to hear that he has been arrested. They actually said that they think he caused the ship to capsize as he did not use the shipping route that he was suppose to, he deviated away from the route causing the ship to be torn open. He should be charged with murder to say the least. The man is a coward.

Yes I heard that too. I feel for the people that were on that ship, they had no guidance from their captain. And they had not had any type of safety class, it was suppose to be the next day after the accident. He was a coward to say the least, he sure is not much of a man.

This guy is just a despicable coward. He showed that he had absolutely no regard or concern for all of the people on his ship. That cruise line must really be hard up for captains if they had someone like him, with no moral character or honor at all, at the helm of one of their ships. It sure doesn't say much for them either. I would still go on a cruise, but I would think twice before I ever booked one with that company.

It really does change my views on Captains of a ship. I always believed that captain and crews are the last to leave. Same thing goes for Bus drivers, captain and crews of aeroplanes, etc. Considering they are supposed to be trained for in case of emergency and such, it just seems to me that they should be going around making sure all passengers are safe, or at least tried to. All the stories that I have read are always like that - Risking their lives to save their passengers. The captain of that capsized boat should really feel embarrassed leaving his ship and its passengers to fend for themselves. I never thought about going on a cruise. Before that it's because I didn't know how to swim. I have learnt swimming last year and even then, cruise does not appeal me for some reason. When I heard about that ship, I immediately thought about a friend of mine who is working as a crew in one of the cruise ships. I didn't know the name of the capsized ship at that time and was worried it might be her ship. Thank God it was not.

I think that he isn't a captain, but a raccomanded who don't know how to do his job. He says that there was a tecnical problem only 1 hour later that the ship hit.

I agree with you. The captain should be responsible for what he did, instead of thinking about himself first,He should make sure that everybody on board find the way out to safety. What patetic man. We can't count on anybody when trouble arises, what a shame! This very bad and I feel for all those who die.

The Captain going down with the ship is a tall tail. The Captain's responsibility is to see to the safety of his passengers, crew and or cargo. To me he was free to leave the ship after he knew that everything that could be done for the passengers, crew and cargo was done. having dinner could be explained by his trying to appear calm and reassuring the passengers. However this captain showed that he was only concerned about himself and the safety of the ship, passengers or crew. No matter what happens in court he will have to answer to a higher power at some time after his time on earth.

Ofcourse is it but not leave before the anouncement has even been made to the passengers. He should have helped and been on hand.

I have heard of the capsized boat since it was first aired on Sunday and that the captain abandoned ship leaving his crew and passengers behind. I don't know what was going on the captains' mind for him to abandon his ship. I know that he is now on house arrest for this fiasco.

He broke Italian maritime law for leaving the ship before he knew the evacuation was fully underway or done. Period. Check out the story of the Oceanos, which was about 20 years ago off the coast of South Africa. The crew completely abandoned ship then, and the captain said "If people want to evacuate, that's their choice" when asked later...wow.

Yes. two workers on the ship say the captain left before the alarm even went off. And when the coast guard tried to get him to go back to the ship he said it was dark now and you couldn't get back on the ship. What a whimp!

hi celticeagle my table mate told me about that then I read more in my on line Register. that man was a coward for sure and he left those passengers to fend for themselves. I hope they sock him with a long prison term as I feel he deserves it.Odd that he even argued with the Coast Guard too. I have bronchitis and reading this makes me cough worse. I have a touch of bronchitis according to Dr. Chang and he gave me a prescription for antibiotics CPap whatever the heck it is.I really do not care what its called if it will just make me well. I sure do not have much regard for that Captain as he was a base coward. He could have helped the passengers.I too am not sure now if I would ever go on a cruise if that stuff could happen. I can swim but the idea of a ship sinking is frightening to me.Now I must also fprce fluids which is hard for me as I don't get thirst in this chilly weather b ut I will mind the doctor. lol

I have not read all about this particular case, but if a captain leaves his ship, there are laws and I´m sure he will have to face a trial. fortunatly I´m not interested in liners. I prefer to travel by myself and stop wherever I want to.
