What do you think of reality shows?

I've never been a fan of reality shows, and since they flood every channel, I have a hard time keeping interested in TV, though members in my family love some of them. I think the thing that bugs me the most is that they are set-up and often loosely scripted that bugs me as they ARE supposed to represent real life events. Though, I can understand that it is hard NOT to be be fake as they know cameras are there. Similarly, Jerry Springer states his show is 100% legitimate, but we know that a good portion of the people on his show act out BECAUSE it is the Jerry Springer show and probably just put on a character for their 30minute fame. Maybe this is the case why reality shows seem so unrealistic? Maybe I'm just not big with these modern TV movements. But, anyways, what do you think of them?

I don´t like them at all, at least the ones that are shown in my country. They surelly don´t represent real life: noone will act the same with cameras watching your every movement. At least, not normal people. Most of us need some privacy. That´s why we have doors, even within our homes where we live with our closest family.

Even when you are posing for a family picture, you put that silly smile that is´s not natural at all.

No kidding, I have a few in my family albums and I wonder what the heck I was thinking at the time. XD My brother-in-law tries to avoid this by putting on this big frown whenever but he's been caught with a smile too. I guess he's better at handling cameras because he's a journalist and does interviews at times.

That is correct, the camera does affect behavior. Even I have found myself acting different when a camera is around, I feel compelled to be in front of it, probably thanks to the media glamor image I was influenced by as I grew up. Most people will... even if not scripted, will put on an act in front of a camera either because they want to be someone else, someone much more glamorous, or much more shocking in hopes of achieving stardom.

I have never been crazy about the reality TV thing either. There are too many cut areas and I can't believe that there aren't a certain amount of staging involved. Like you said too...there is the knowledge of the camera being there too. I have watched a couple of reality shows when the genre first started but it seemed like each new one got worse to me. More ridiculous. That's just my opinion though. There are obviously a lot of people that enjoy them.

Well, even if an opinion, I do agree with it. It is pretty interesting, not just annoying, how many people will buy into it. I am the only really critical member of my family, the rest really seem to believe a good number of these shows arguing the "reality TV" tag as the main defense. I say it doesn't mean they don't act, just that they are filmed on location in their house or what have you.

I have to say, I was one of those who kind of got sucked in on some of the reality shows. Well, one night I was at work and began watching a show on TruTv called Southern Fried Stings. As it turned out, the more episodes I watched the more I noticed that the same people were in every episode. There are other shows that I've watched from TruTv, like Black Gold, where after watching the previous seasons you begin to see that it's all the same stuff. I've never seen an employer hire and fire the same people so many times. But when you first start watching they appear to be interesting and I guess for some people who don't really pay attention to detail then they wouldn't notice just how fake they all are. I hate to watch Jerry Springer because it is so ridiculous. There is no way that it is not staged. Regardless whether the producer is the one staging it or the people they have on the show but somewhere along the line it's staged.

Thank you for your response! Indeed, I know what you mean by this, I've watched many reality TV shows and see a lot of the same routines being pulled. One of the biggest offenders is perhaps the Bachelor series. Breaking it down, you notice a bit of a role each person plays every time. Character changes dramatically in cases where they may be "needed" to, to such an extent it seems unnatural. Maybe because it'd appeal to fans more? Oh well, either way you will see the same characters played by different people and the game goes on. I think people need to pay more attention to it, as it is bogging down TV value.

I have thought that Jerry Springer for years has been a set up show and things are so scripted on it and it even really looks like it. Now the Maury show is getting the same way to me and im nto really liking the talk shoes anymore and i use to like watching so many when they were more talk show hosts on during the day. Now i do watch Jersey Shore and think that isnt scripted at all and i really enjoy that too because its real life drama that goes on and sometimes people can relate to those. I do think its a good show and many dont but its kind of silly at the same time. American Idol is scripted at times because its not the first day you get to see the famous judges you actually have a day or two in between when you see other judges that make your deicision of going on or not. They put the bad people through for ratings of course so we would all watch the funny people try to sing.

Technically Jersey Shore IS one of the fakest shows on these days. They are not acting as they normally would and even admitted to acting out on camera to put on a big show. They say it is for show and to get people to see them as more interesting and don't really care if it puts a bad image on people. They say, "it is all just a show" based on an interview I heard. If I was hearing right.

OMG! I am a reality show junkie! Survivor, Big Brother, Chopped, Top Chef, Hells Kitchen, Dancing With the Stars, yea, I watch them all! The only one that I refuse to watch is that Kardashian bunch. I just don't like them! You know the shows that paved the way for present day reality TV was shows like Candid Camera, America's Funniest Videos and Cops.

The only one of those that I actually watched was Dancing With the Stars, though I hate it when they try to add forced publicity or controversy into their shows. I've seen them do it at least twice. Though I do like the show actually and I find it and interesting watch when they are doing it legit. I like to watch those who know little to nothing about dancing and learning the steps from their partner. Teaches some good lessons at times too which I like.

I'm fond of reality shows like Survivor and The Amazing Race, but I'm not fond of The Bachelor and the like. What you say is true, I find it hard to believe that these shows would be '100% legitimate' when the people who join them always assume a character to entertain so that they would get their 15 seconds of fame. Nonetheless, I really love the competitive aspect of reality shows, so I can't stop watching them no matter what I do!

True, there is a "magnetic" appeal to many people I believe that I can't quite put a finger on. Even a heavy critic as myself I do feel drawn at times without exactly knowing why. But Survivor, I haven't seen much of, I think it actually has some educational value for people who may get stuck somewhere. As far as competitive goes, I like Wipeout, but that's more of a goofy acrobatic gameshow. I've seen a bit of The Amazing Race, it seemed alright and a blind man acing those with vision gave me a smile. It too has educational value, I like that in shows. Makes audience think too and learn.

The only "reality" show I have cared for was Biggest Loser, but I get tired of it easily. I am also not a very competitive person and so I feel bad for the people who get sent off. I do not find reality shows to be very real either.

Right, I understand that. I like Biggest Loser's message at the least, though for people to get fit. We SHOULD reward people for getting around and caring for their health as overall American health concerns are on the rise. I don't mean to aim to be the next Arnold Schwarzenegger but to just for people to take care of themselves. I too am not very competitive either, and I feel bad for people that get sent off. But yeah, thank you for your input, and I agree. :)

Starstruck? - Yes, I was as a young man (here); I wanted to be famous.
I've not watched too many of them, although I have watched the Jerry Springer Show quite a lot in the past although I'd call that a talk rather than a reality show as such. The only reality show I can think of I've watched extensively is Big Brother UK. Although even at that, several of the series I barely watched at all as I recall. However, one or two of them I got drawn into, and found myself "following" as it were. I even auditioned for series 1 of Big Brother UK, as I did for the X Factor, and several other entertainment shows. However, I've only ever appeared on TV in one entertainment style programme, and that was a quiz show back in the late 90s. Although I think I may have appeared on a sports show as a kid. And I've done a lot of extra and walk on work for both movies and TV.

OMG! I really like to watch a couple of reality shows like the one that show contestants drinking and eating those bugs and flies mixed in with their soda, milk shakes or food etc.. these idiots are puking while struggling to down those drink into their throat in order to come out first, so that they can win the first prize of ten of thousand dollars. It is just gross some one will run the risk of getting sick in the stomach in order to win the prize by swallowing those bugs, insects, ants, flies, worms and sh*t in front of camera. It is so funny looking at the expression on the face of those contestants.

Oh wow, I suppose it is the thought of the bugs in there itself that makes them sick. I've accidentally eaten bugs before and they didn't taste like much of anything. Ah well, I dunno if I'd find it particularly funny or pathetic what people will do for money. Though something inside me thinks I'd be able to win if I tune out the fact I'm eating bugs. Not saying I WOULD but... 1,000 isn't too bad for the effort... though I tell you, if I ever did, I may not puke but I'd never do it again.

I share your sentiments on this. I'm also not big on reality shows. I watch one or two shows, but I guess the rest are just "non-reality." I think that even though it's not scripted, like you said, the mere fact that they know they're on camera somehow makes them act up a little. I mean, we're not really seeing spontaneity in those people since they're mindful of what they're doing.
• United States
19 Jan 12
Or in other cases we are seeing MORE spontaneity because they know they are on camera, you know, trying to be a "character" and all and put on a big show for their fame as the "one who swung at the other". Other times it just seems flat and puppety like trying to seem proper and they sound like they are just reading it all from a paper somewhere in the background. Thanks for your input! :)

i think it's a good way of showing the true colors of some actors/actresses.... We're able to see how they deal with people not in a scripted way...

I don't know, who is to say that this is who they really are? From acting they have learned to be convincing. They are well versed in constructing a persona at a whim. It isn't a good place to pass a judgement. So, in reality, you can't know what IS reality in Reality TV.

For me reality shows are the stupidest thing they ever made. I don`t see the point of this. But people like to watch the problems, pain, disasters from other people. thats the only way that you can enjoy watching any kind of reality show. I think its better to watch the worst movie, its still better than reality shows.

Guess the real reality in Reality Shows is the reality the watchers are trying to leave behind. Well, I'm none too keen on watching the pain and such of others, I rather some dumb modern cartoon. I mean a poorly executed cartoon, I like good cartoons, but these are mainly the old ones. Heck, we have cartoons now that emulate reality shows, in ways it is a TV cancer that needs to slow down in my opinion. Thanks for your response by the way!

There are some reality shows that I watch like Amazing Race and The Pickers. Most of the supposed reality shows out there are just plain nonsense most specially those shows that are about following the life of celebrities or wannabe celebrities for 24/7. For sure, they are just acting out most of the parts shown so as to attract more of the attention of the viewers. They'll create scenarios that are just stupid just to get additional viewership. If I am super bored, then I might kill time by watching those garbage reality shows. Or maybe I'll just continue reading my books or do some gardening instead of wasting my electricity on those nonsense shows :)

I hear you! It is as I think, most of them are just playing out a role and just saying/doing anything to get more views and popularity. There are people who really buy into it though and I have even argued with relatives on how it is fake, I still can't believe how they convince themselves it is 100% real life. And I hear you, I rather do something constructive with my time than deal with that nonsense. :)
