Do you use your local library? Why/why not? Which things does your local library offer?
At the libraries in my country we can do a lot of different things. There are books, audiobooks, music, films and games etc. There are computers with internet access and art exhibitions. The library also offers free computer classes and those classes are very popular.
I visit the library very often, and I borrow books, music and films. They have many different cds and when I borrow cds at the library I get the chance to listen to many different bands without buying the cds. I also like to borrow films, because there are some films that I just want watch one time and it would be a waste of money to buy them and it would be to hard to download them, because of my bad internet connection. I borrow many books at the library every month. I love reading and it would be expensive to buy all of the books that I want to read.

Hi porcospino,
In my school days I used Library to greater extend. But now I don't. I even forget when I lastly visited our local area library(but now I often visit library in my college).
Your area library got lots of option, its very nice to hear about it but some have we don't have such options, so here visitors are very low to our area library.
Then after getting Internet connection in home, i got all books in soft copy format and it stopped me from going to library.

I think that the Danish libraries are generally popular and they get many visitors, but not as many as they got in the past when there was no internet. Today we have possibilities that we didn't have in the past. When there was no internet the library was the only place to look for information about a topic, Today lots of people use the internet instead. It is very convenient to have an internet connection at home, you can download books and so many other things

In the past I seldom went to the library because I thought the books there were dirty and old. Now I have changed because of my child. I hope he will have a good habit of reading. Although I often buy him new books. But nobody can have more books than the library. So we all go to the library and borrow books from it. It is good to teach the children how to take advantage of the library. Reading is important for them. It is a part of study.
I love China

I agree with that. I think it is important use the library already as a child. I recently read about a survey that compared people who used the library in their childhood and people who didn't use the library in their childhood. The people had used the library since their childhood got better results at university than the people who weren't taught to use the library. My parents like to read and we often visited the library when I was child, and I think that is one of the reasons why I read so much today.

growing up, my mom used to take me to the library about once a week and hubby and i have done the same with our kids. it is so important to read!
we are fortunate that we live in a fairly large city with a big number of branches and a good online system that allows you to book anything the library offers. this allows me to get whatever i want. we just need to pick the items up before a certain day.

My mother did the same thing when I was a child. She took me to the library even before I was able to read and she let me pick out the books that I wanted my parents to read aloud. When I got older and started reading my own books, my mother and I kept on visiting the library together. Today I still visit the library very often. My library also has an online system when we can reservations. When we are able to pick up the book we receive an email. If we have access to the internet we can use that system from our own home, and that is very nice.

Absolutely. My husband often walks there to check out books, bring them back, etc. He also goes onto their website to search for books he's seen elsewhere and put them on hold.
I find it hard to find books I can read at the library simply because many of them are in subpar shape. I've never been able to read books with a creased binding, etc. Still, I go there to rent documentaries, such as National Geographic, Discovery, and History Channel shows and specials. Those channels used to be the only TV channels I would watch, and by renting these shows at the library, I can effectively not pay for cable TV and save myself $30 plus a month.
My husband and I aren't huge movie people; we tend to find movies very lackluster and simple-minded compared to the complex ideas of current video games, etc. Nonetheless, we find maybe two or three movies a year worth watching and rent them at the library. It saves money and also gives you a little extra time compared to renting them at Redbox and having to pay another dollar for another night. The only thing I wish libraries would do is add video games to their collection...that would be great for us!
On a last note, it's also fun to go to the library and just browse. It's a nice atmosphere, and for heaven's sake, everything is free! I don't quite understand how people go through life wanting to read and buy everything from the internet; going to the library gives you a chance to interact with people, to get out of the house and go somewhere that most people go for enjoyment, and some go for research. Of course, interacting with other humans seems to be exactly what many are avoiding nowadays.

It is great that you are able to rent documentaries at the library. I also like National Geographic, Discovery and History channel, but unfortunately we are not able to borrow documentaries at the library, they only have movies like comedies, thrillers etc. I often visit the library, and I agree with you, it is fun to go to the library and just browse. I always find something interesting when I do that. I think that there are many advantages about the internet and I use it a lot, but it could never replace my visits to the library.

I haven't but I'm planning to go there soon. Yes. I heard that libraries in some other countries are really useful to its people, but here in my country, I don't think so. I've been in many different places already and I haven't heard a local (not currently studying) who goes to the library often or as needed.

The libraries in your country sound different from the libraries in my country. In my country many people visit the libraries and every morning before the library opens a big gruop of people gather in front of door. I think that the Danish libraries are very good and I love visiting them. I like books, but I think it is very nice that we are able to borrow other things as well.

That sounds like a great way to earn some extra money, where do you write reviews? I love the to visit the library and I think it great that everything is free. My local library offer a lot of different thing. In the past they only had books, but today there are a lot of other possibities like cds, dvds, art and games.

I used to be an avid reader, so I was a regular visitor to the local library. sadly my eyesight is quite poor now and reading books is not really as practical as it used to be, so I do not tend to visit a library at all nowadays.
I did have the habit for a while of visiting the music section to borrow CDs, which was very useful because I like opera and many of the operas are either hard to find or quite expensive. After a while I found that most of the interesting material was something I had already borrowed, so my visits slowed down and finally stopped.

I am sorry to hear about the problems with your eyesight. My father has the same problem as you. He had an eye operation and after the operation he became blind, later he partly regained his eyesight. He is not blind today, but his eyesight is poor and it has become difficult and timeconsuming for him to read, and he has decided to sell many of his books. At my local library we are also able to borrow cds and I often do that. Unfortunately it is not quite as interesting as it was in the beginning, because I have already borrowed a lot of cds and it has become harder to find some cds that I am interested in. I hope they would buy some new materials, but I am not sure that is going to happen in the near future.

There are no known libraries here in our place. if you would want to go to a library, there is only one option which is the one inside our city hall. i think many people don't go or bother much going to libraries when books are available in ebook versions, and well some are available in bookstores and you can read an entire book there too!

I think it is true that less people visit the libraries today. In the past the library was the only option when when we wanted to find information about a topic, today a lot of people choose to search the internet before they visit the library. Today is it also possible to download books on the internet instead of borrowing them at the library. You wrote that it was also possible to read books in the bookstores. I wish we had that possibity, too. We not allowed to do that, but I know that it is possible in many other countries.

I think that many people visit the library every once in a while like you do. I visit the library very often, because I love to read and I also love music and movies. I have never participated in any of the classes that they offer, but I use the library in many other ways. In the past they only had books, but today there are so many other things like cds and dvs.

Library is awesome but I rarely have time to visit one anymore. The closest library is in the town, around 10 km from my house. Back then I had time to spare to spend hours in the library and borrow books or novels. I don't know when I will have time to visit one now. I need to be at the shop all day long, exception for the time to return home to sleep and eat. When I am free the library is close.

I used to have the same problem. I didn't work in my own town and when I finished work I had to catch a train to my own town and when I arrived in my own town the library was closed. I didn't really have the time to visit the library during that period because I was too busy with work and other activities. Today I have able to visit the library again and I am very happy about that, because I love reading.

Whenever I can which is sadly not that often. There used to be two libraries rather close to this home but sadly the economy and the fact that many people just aren't interested in going to the library anymore, the closer one really had to shut down. Sadly, the library is becoming a curiosity, a relic of another time, something that is just slowly dying off.
Granted, when I am able to stop by with the one library, there are just going to be a lot of times where it does bring back all kinds of fond memories of another time. There are DVDS offered, books of course, computer access, and perhaps a couple of other things. Sadly nothing is going to be forever and it perhaps is best to enjoy our libraries while we can.

Unfortuneately I think that you are right about the libraries. It is sad, but I don't think that they will be there forever, because today many people use the internet instead and they download books, music and films instead of borrowing them at the library. A lot of small libraries in my country have shut down and I think that it is going to continue that way. In the future I think that there will only be one library in each part of the country.
On my island the small libraries in the villages have been replaced by a mobile library with a small selection of books. It drives from village to village and the residents of those villages can visit the mobile library 45 minutes a week. I live in the biggest town we have a small "ordinary" library here. I hope that they are not going to shut that one down, but I am afraid that it might happen one day.

I used the library a lot while I was in college. Sometimes I studied in the library because I had easy access to a lot of different books that way. Sometimes I borrowed some books and studied in my home instead, but the library was definately a very useful place to visit as a student. Today I am not a student anymore, but I still visit the library. Today I borrow novels and non-fiction books about the topics that I am interested in. I love reading and I am very happy that I am able to get free books from the library.

I think that it is a great habit to visit the library several times a week. I like to visit my local library quite often as well. We can borrow books, cds and dvds. I like to read so I borrow many books, but I also like to borrow cds and dvds because that gives me the chance to listen to many different kinds of music without buying the cds or watch movies without buying my own copy. My local library also has many different newspapers and magazines that we can read at the library and many people visit that library to read newspapers and magazines.

It is sad new books aren't available at your local library. We are very lucky because our libraries are modern and the new books are available. They also have old books like books from 1960's and 1970's, but the majority of the books are relatively new. The taxes in my country are very high and that is one of the reasons why the libraries are able to buy new materials.

I do the same thing. I don't have the extra money to spend on books so I just borrow them from the library. It saves me money that I can be using for other things like paying bills and school. When I was in college I used to also borrow books that I needed for class. A lot of the classes that I took were Literature classes so I was able to save a lot of money by borrowing books from the library. I know that there are audio books and movies in the library but I stick to physical books. I used to borrow films but I don't anymore because they take too long but aI do borrow some DVD's every once in a blue moon. It's a good thing that we have libraries that allow us to borrow books for free.

Yes, when we borrow books at the library, we can save the money and spend it on something else. I also used the library a lot when I was a student and I saved hundreds of dollars that way, because the books that we used at my school we were really expensive. Sometimes if I had to write an assignment I looked for information in many different books, and it would have been very expensive to buy every single book. I am very happy that we are able to borrow books for free. I also borrow music and films, but sometimes it hard to get the popular films, because the waiting lists are long.

Hi Porcospino
Unfortunately, there is just one State Library in our town and it is quite distant from the place where I stay. The other one, nearer, but doesnt have a better collection - it offers only old magazines related to electronics, religion, and the daily newspapers. I dont prefer any of these - The religious magazines would have been an option if they were texts or preachings from greats - the magazines of today merely act as a platform to misguide. However, the state library has a better collection - and houses books of almost all sections.
The Internet has been a great boon for people like me who stay at home due to illness and health conditions. I have found some good websites that allow reading online and stick with them today. Also, the You Tube videos come handy if there is anything that needs to be learned - like the DIY video sections.

Your state library sounds like the big library that we have on the neighbour island. They have fiction as well as non-fiction about almost any topic, and there are lots and lots of books to choose from. Unfortunately this library is not close to my home, so I don't visit it that often. There is small library on my island, it is within walking distance, but they have few books compared to the big library. I visit that library sometimes, but it not always easy to find something that I want to read, because of the limited number of books.
It is great that the internet has made it possible to read online. We have many possibilities today that didn't exist in the past. YouTube is also a great thing. We are able to find so many different things there. In the beginning I only used Youtube when I wanted to listen to my favourite music videos, but there are many other useful and interesting videos

I don't think that I could live without the library
I visit it very often and I borrow both fiction and non-fiction. Actually I have going to the library tomorrow because I have to return some of the books that I borrowed. I am going to borrow new books, cds and maybe some dvds if I find something that I would like to watch.

I visit mine at least twice a month. I am due to return books either tomorrow or the next day. My library offers a new service where you can rent digital copies of books through amazon. The library has a fabulous children's department. They even have the die cuts and a cricut to use for scrapbooking.

I wish that our library is the same as yours in your place. Our library does only have books and magazines. But borrowing a cd, music, films is not on their list. I wish they have. I might visit our library everyday if they have. oh how i wish they have.
But, when i was still studying, my favorite hang out is the library. I also love reading that's why i spent my vacant time in the library, looking for something interesting to read.

Today the libraries in my country offer many different things, but it hasn't always been that way. In the past our libraries were like your libraries and we were only able to borrow books there. I remember that from my childhood. Today I think that almost every library in my country offer music and films, but at the small libraries there are only few cds and few films to choose from. The library on my island is one of those small libraries, so I also visit the big library on the neighbour island sometimes. Maybe the libraries at your place will also introduce films and cds one day.
