Are grades so important in life? (aside from just passing)

Are grades so important in life? Is that not so good grade in your math subject have a negative impact in your life? Is the stressing and the worrying over your marks worth it? I am a fairly good student, on the dean's list but still a slacker. Often late or absent. For me, grades aren't accurate basis for a student's capacity and knowledge in that subject or maybe even his effort in it. What's your opinion?

For me it does not really mean even a single cent at all...unless if you wish to get bossed around by other people who possibly may have lower IQ than you, maybe it can be worth something... If you're not so good at math, at least make yourself good in the basics such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. These four mathematics are the most important "education" you should remember because you'll be counting money all your life. In my opinion, since we have an almost similar case, we should get along and get rich instead. It does not say that in order to get rich you need to be able to graduate, have good grades and a secure job. No, instead, most of the time, the people who are rich are all school-idiots but money geniuses...what do you say? lol

I am good in math, that was just some random example. XD Studying all the time is not good but not studying is also bad. Yes! Let's get rich instead! XD

Well yes, grades do tell something about a person. But also remember that grades do matter but they don't tell everything either. It is how you got that grade and the learning and development that you made in having that grade is what matters. But still, in this world of standards and measurements, everything is being quantified. To evaluate a certain thing, one must have a measurable parameter to analyze with. That's what makes grades still important. But I do feel that those numbers can be pretty deceptive or hyped too. Still you have to live with the numbers as the form of evaluation and just prove the numbers right or wrong.

Yes, some teachers are just plain unfair in their assessment, I am sure that a teacher in a major subject of mind doesn't even have a class record. :/

I say no to this, not in real life, I think when it comes to the crunch its commonsense and job knowledge which I don't think you learn at school. When I think back except for reading writing and arithmatic nothing else at school did me any good, I learnt commonsense from my parents.

Yes, I feel that teachers just keep feeding us stuff that have no relevance at all. It is very depressing.

hi bluerhapsody, I think that the most important thing in our life as a student is not the grade but the lessons and skills and the developed talents that we got while we were on the school. Grades are just numbers but the thing that will dictate more on your life is how you learned those subjects being taught upon you. I heard some valedictorians that failed to have a good job and also some ordinary or average students that make it a success on the field of industry. I think that that is one reason we should not take grades seriously on our studies.

I totally agree. XD

Grades are just numbers. It doesn't really represent one's capability for most of the students. I, myself is a student and don't really stress out over my grades. Some of my grades that I got, as what that I have observed were depends on the teacher, attendance and other activities. Though grades are just numbers, I don't want just to pass a subject.

I feel that way most of the times too. My grade does not equate to the knowledge or things that I have learned.

Grades are important especially when you're still in school and trying to study hard to get into the career you want. With effort you'll be able to reach the good career you always wanted. So grades really do matter unless you already have a decent paying job and are just going to school to learn for another job. In my country, the final year of high school is the most stressful and most competitive. Students must study hard, get very good grades and beat as many people as possible as the system is based on rank and your rank in the state determines which university and career you can do. The higher your rank, the more chance you'll do the high paying jobs like a Doctor. Sometimes grades don't show a student's capacity but how else will teachers distinguish a student from another student and review their performance?

I totally agree with what you said. In our country too, grades are so important. They are sometimes, being looked into by employers before they will interview you further, specially if you are a fresh graduate with no experience to boast.

I'm not a big fan of grades. I think it would be better to just find a different way to assess knowledge and show improvement instead of making someone feel bad because they didn't do as well as the person next to them. In some countries, grades are everything even if you can't think.

Grades and marks, have a very practical importance, because, of course, to pass the grade, and, they, often will determine the University you can go to further your studies. The escential is the knowledge, some people with great marks at school and college, can be not so successful in life, while someone who was a poor student, may become someone outstanding in the future. Generally speaking, marks are a good way to determine the grade of knowledge someone has, but they do not determine the future, what is important in the end is the clarity of objectives in life, an the determination to reach our goals. Since marks and grades are already stablished and determined for most of careers, it is good to pay some attention to them, they are important, but, not the most important, to succeed.

Grades are just a measure of how you followed all the rules and regulations in class. But real learning doesn't really come from what your grades are. Grades are just numbers but what you learn from them is the most important thing.

Contrary to what others believe, I have come to appreciate that getting impressive grades has the following advantages: 1. Good grades reflect your mental proficiency in a subject matter. This indicates reasonably well how capable you are in a subject matter. 2. Good grades also indicate your mindset and values towards your education. It indicates how serious, persevering, patient and responsible you were in studying a subject matter. 3. Good grades can help you project an image of competence, hard work, dependability and responsibility as you apply for a job. Be wary though that when you flaunt good grades as you apply for a job, and as soon as you are hired, you have to live up to the expectation of those whom you presented your transcript of records. Be prepared to prove to them that you are really capable and reliable.

grades are not really important when you are already working. but you will definitely need good grades to get a job. imagine applying at a job submitting your OTR and competing with someone who is summa (mylot blurred come) laude while on your OTR you barely passed. first impression? who works hard for the grade ofcourse the summa one, so it has an impression that the summa one will work harder in a work setting - summa one is consistent and determined. so,, over all it's so important.

That does make sense. The one with the title would be more of an attractive prospect for the employer. XD

You just said it all. An examination in which a student is supposed to write the answers on the answer sheet can never judge his caliber and potential. He might have been ill last night or he might have been into some mental trauma or anything else which could affect his performance in the exam adversely. In my opinion i think that we must develop a system where a student is not allotted a rank based on his marks but he should be categorized on the basis of what he is best at.
31 Jan 12
Yes! But unfortunately, in my country, students are encouraged to go for stable jobs with the good income, no matter what affinity they have. Memorization and conceptualization is important but not everyone is good at it. They might be better with their hands.

Hi friend, grades and marks are important, however some persons have the ability to get a good job and life without getting more marks in their school and college, it is all based on our fate. Don't worry about the past and your weakness, you have the ability to come out from your problem and get good marks in Maths, try your maximum to give your full concentration in Maths. Wish you to get more marks in all your exams

Grades are not that important, I guess knowledge is.. but for now you need to have good grades specially if you wanted to have a job.. Companies do hire based on Transcript of records, so just work hard then have good grades..

Somehow it is. Honor students gets better offer and most of the time they get more edge than the regular graduates. It may not be an accurate basis for someones capability but I guess this is one of the many aspects employers look at when applicant doesn't have any job experience.

Depends on the person really. I like learning in general, and so good grades are like something I picked up on the way. Some people might push their selves during exams only to get good grades. These people might get good jobs initially, but most of the time they don't put much effort into their job and so slowly fall in their careers. If you are looking to living a life based on money like most people, then I would say yes, grades are important. But if you're looking to live your life like on of those adventurers who travel the world with no idea how their gonna live the day after tomorrow, then I would say grades are absolutely nothing to be cared about for you. I hope this helped. Have a nice time myLotting!

For me grades are important for it is the basis if you're going to pass or not. But if we talk about the person itself, we cannot rely on grades to say that this person is good or not characteristically speaking. Even when applying for a job, an employer doesn't really rely alone on grades but on how flexible and how accurate you are in the work you applied for.

Yes indeed, it's so important in your parents life not just in ourselves but indeed to them. Having a good grades, is only the thing that you can pay off to your parents for spending them their money, and effort just to send you in school. Good grades and graduating from a course is the parents happiness. Make your parents proud of you, studying hard you know is the only thing you can do to have a good grades, focus in your goal.Good luck in your studies.

It's not just the grades; some people barely even try and they get A's in their classes, others bust their butt's just to get C's. It's the factor of TRYING that I think is most important.
